A series of nucleotide sugar interconversion enzymes (NSEs) generate the activated sugar donors required for biosynthesis of cell wall matrix polysaccharides and glycoproteins. UDP-glucose 4-epimerases (UGEs) are NSEs that function in the interconversion of UDP-glucose (UDP-Glc) and UDP-galactose (UDP-Gal). The roles of UDP-glucose 4-epimerases in monocots remain unclear due to redundancy in the pathways. Here, we report a brittle plant (bp1) rice mutant that exhibits brittle leaves and culms at all growth stages. The mutant culms had reduced levels of rhamnogalacturonan I, homogalacturonan, and arabinogalactan proteins. Moreover, the mutant had altered contents of uronic acids, neutral noncellulosic monosaccharides, and cellulose. Map-based cloning demonstrated that OsBP1 encodes a UDP-glucose 4-epimerase (OsUGE2), a cytosolic protein. We also show that BP1 can form homo- and hetero-protein complexes with other UGE family members and with UDP-galactose transporters 2 (OsUGT2) and 3 (OsUGT3), which may facilitate the channeling of Gal to polysaccharides and proteoglycans. Our results demonstrate that BP1 participates in regulating the sugar composition and structure of rice cell walls.
The major systemic manifestation of hemotoxicity in human snakebite envenoming is venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC). A subset of patients with VICC develop thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), in which acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs. We aimed to investigate the association between schistocytosis in snakebite patients with VICC and AKI, compared to non-envenomed patients.
Serial blood films collected from a prospective cohort of snakebite patients (Australian Snakebite Project) were examined. Cases were classified a priori as non-envenomed snakebites (normal controls), envenomed without VICC, partial VICC without AKI, complete VICC without AKI, and VICC with AKI based on defined clinical and laboratory criteria. The percentage of schistocytes between groups was compared and correlated by Kendall's tau b test.
Seven hundred and eighty blood films from 234 snakebite cases were analyzed. There was a statistically significant correlation (τ=.69, SE .03, P<.001) for schistocytosis between the ordered groups of non-envenomed snakebites, envenomed without VICC, partial VICC without AKI, complete VICC without AKI, and VICC with AKI groups. Patients with VICC and AKI had a platelet nadir median of 42×10
/L (interquartile range [IQR] 25-130×10
/L), hemoglobin nadir of median 107g/L (IQR 66-122g/L), and maximum LDH median of 1128U/L (IQR 474-3255U/L). Selleckchem Sanguinarine A 1.0% threshold for schistocytosis yielded 90% sensitivity (95% CI 67%-98%) and 71% specificity (95% CI 62%-79%) for predicting AKI in patients with VICC.
Schistocyte quantitation has good diagnostic utility in snakebite patients with VICC. A definition of snakebite TMA as MAHA with ≥1.0% schistocytes and thrombocytopenia, would appear to be appropriate.

Most studies reported prevalence of the psychiatric comorbidities among these individuals; however, the incidence of developing comorbidities is unclear. This study used Taiwan's claims database and aimed to investigate the incidence of developing major psychiatric comorbidities in individuals with autism spectrum disorder and whether the incidence was moderated by gender, autism-spectrum disorder subtypes, and autism-associated neurodevelopmental conditions. A total of 3,837 individuals with autism spectrum disorder (2,929 autistic disorder, 447 Asperger syndrome, 461 pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified) and 38,370 comparison subjects, who were matched by age and gender, were included. The incidences of schizophrenia spectrum, bipolar, and major depressive disorders was examined. The results showed that the incidences of schizophrenia spectrum (9.7 per 1,000 person-year), bipollness among individual with ASD were significantly higher than those without ASD. In addition, the incidences were influenced by autism subtypes, gender, and comorbid neurodevelopmental conditions. This qualitative study aimed to explore psychosocial barriers and enablers to accessing dental services for people with clinically severe obesity (PwCSO). Eight focus groups were conducted by one researcher with 40 adult participants at the Adult Healthy Weight Clinic within a hospital-based obesity service. Thematic analysis of focus group transcripts was performed to reveal insights relating to how PwCSO experience dental care and view oral health. A total of 11 participants were male, 29 female, all between the ages of 23 to 74 (mean age of 50). The body mass index of participants ranged from 31.6 to 84.6 kg/m2 . The results highlighted four key themes, including "disempowerment to act to improve oral health", "weight-related stigma and discrimination", "unpredictability of the dental environment" and a "lack of tailored services for PwCSO". A number of subthemes were identified, which reflect the six categories of barriers to access from the disability literature availability, affordability, acceptability, accommodation, accessibility and appropriateness. These were explored to further appreciate the unique psychosocial considerations for this group. This study concluded that PwCSO face significant barriers to accessing dental services across all six categories highlighted in the disability literature. The study findings provide valuable patient-based information regarding the psychosocial barriers to accessing dental services, which are relevant for all healthcare professionals. The study reflected an increased need for promotion of the dentist's role in obesity management and obesity-related dental training, including familiarization with the biopsychosocial domains of obesity to reduce weight related stigma and discrimination, as an area for further study. The findings also guide the design of Specialized Bariatric Dental Services in the future, with a focus on enablers to access.
