Continuing professional education (CPE) for nurses is deemed an essential component to develop, maintain and update professional skills. However, there is little empirical evidence of its effectiveness or factors which may influence its application into practice.

This paper explores a continuing professional education programme on the safe administration of medication and how new knowledge and skills are transferred into clinical practice.

Realist evaluation provided the framework for this study. Realist evaluation stresses the need to evaluate programmes within "context," and to ask what "mechanisms" are acting to produce which "outcomes." This realist evaluation had four distinct stages. Firstly, theories were built as conjectured CMO configurations (Stage 1 and 2), then these cCMO were tested (Stage 3) and they were then refined (Stage 4).

Data was collected through document analysis and interviews (9) to build and refine CMOs. The conjectured CMOs were tested by clinical observation, interview (7)olicy and practice on the factors required to ensure learning from CPE is applied in practice. The realist evaluation framework should be applied when evaluating CPE programmes as the rationale for such programmes is to maintain and improve patient care.

Music is a tool that can be used to reduce stress and anxiety, maintain vital signs at normal levels, and increase exam success.

This study aimed to determine the effect of music therapy on nursing students' first objective structured clinical exam success, anxiety levels, and vital signs, and to reveal their views about music therapy in the context of an exam.

Mixed-pattern single-blind randomized controlled qualitative study.

First-year students enrolled in the Fundamentals of Nursing II course were randomly assigned to an experimental (n=61) or control group (n=64). Twenty-two (22) experimental group students provided the sample for the qualitative stage.

Data were collected between February and June 2018 using the Informative Features Form, State-trait Anxiety Inventory, Vital Signs Assessment Form, Skill Checklists, and Focus-group Interview Form. All students completed the theoretical classes, laboratory classes, and small-grd no effect on exam success or anxiety levels. This study suggests that more music therapy sessions be conducted with different groups of students in greater numbers before different exams.

Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) has been widely used as a measure of long-term stress. Although elevated HCC has been observed in healthy people experiencing chronic stress, findings regarding individuals with mental disorders have been complicated. This review attempts to systematically present all the published research on major depression and HCC. An extensive search of databases was performed to identify articles that investigated this question. selleck chemicals The initial search retrieved 142 studies, of which, 16 original articles were included in this review. Results were contradictory; most of the studies showed no significant HCC differences between MDD patients and controls, while others indicated either higher or lower HCC in MDD patients than controls. Higher HCC was reported in first depressive episode compared to recurrent MDD and controls; patients with comorbid MDD and anxiety disorder had higher HCC than controls. No significant HCC difference was found between patients with melancholic or atypical depression and controls. Findings concerning HCC in postpartum depression were inconsistent. A meta-analysis of the data extracted from seven studies of the sample was performed to quantify the degree of cortisol change in MDD patients vs. controls. A random effects model revealed no significant hair cortisol concentrations difference between depressed patients and healthy controls (SMD -0.02, 95% CI -0.36 to 0.32). Significant heterogeneity was identified across included studies (P = 0.002, I2 = 71%). The disagreement among studies' results indicates that there is room for improvement in this research field. Confounding factors independent of depression should be taken into consideration.The present study explored the antidepressant potential of vorinostat (VOR) against chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) in mice. Since this model has the remarkable capacity to delineate the resilient and the defeated mice, we also looked for their molecular deviations. Defeated mice showed classical phenotypic alterations such as anhedonia, social avoidance, anxiety and despair. Whereas, resilient mice were immune to the development of those. Both defeated and resilient mice demonstrated marked CORT elevation in blood. Development of resilience vs. defeat to CSDS was found to be associated with the differential nuclear levels of GR, HDAC3 and HDAC6 in the hippocampus. Activation of a stress responsive adaptive mechanism involving these mediators at the nuclear level might be offering resilience while maladaptive mechanisms leading to defeat. Interestingly, an elevated hippocampal HDAC6 level in defeated mice was also observed, which was restored by VOR treatment. Further studies will be necessary to delineate the HDAC6 associated antidepressant mechanisms.
