Median age was 61 years old with stroke and 62 years old without stroke (p = 0.99). In both groups, 82 (39.0%) were women and the median CHA2DS2-VASc was 2 (interquartile range, 1-2). Anticoagulation medication was prescribed to 46 (22.7%) patients in the group who had had a stroke and 52 (25.6%) in the group without stroke (p = 0.49). HOIPIN-8 manufacturer On Cox regression analysis, CAC was associated with stroke (hazard ratio [HR], 1.47; 95% CI, 1.10-1.97; p less then 0.01) and mortality (adjusted HR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.02-1.95; p = 0.04). CONCLUSION. Patients with AF and incidental CAC depicted on chest CT have an increased risk of stroke and mortality beyond established risk factors.OBJECTIVE. Industry relationships drive technologic innovation in interventional radiology and offer opportunities for professional growth. Women are underrepresented in interventional radiology despite the growing recognition of the importance of diversity. This study characterized gender disparities in financial relationships between industry and academic interventional radiologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, U.S. academic interventional radiology physicians and their academic ranks were identified by searching websites of practices with accredited interventional radiology fellowship programs. Publicly available databases were queried to collect each physician's gender, years since medical school graduation, h-index, academic rank, and industry payments in 2018. Wilcoxon and chi-square tests compared payments between genders. A general linear model assessed the impact of academic rank, years since graduation, gender, and h-index on payments. RESULTS. Of 842 academic interventional radiology physicians, 108 (13%) were women. A total $14,206,599.41 was received by 686 doctors (81%); only $147,975.28 (1%) was received by women. A lower percentage of women (74%) than men (83%) received payments (p = 0.04); median total payments were lower for women ($535) than men ($792) (p = 0.01). Academic rank, h-index, years since graduation, and male gender were independent predictors of higher payments. Industry payments supporting technologic advancement were made exclusively to men. CONCLUSION. Female interventional radiology physicians received fewer and lower industry payments, earning 1% of total payments despite constituting 13% of physicians. Gender independently predicted industry payments, regardless of h-index, academic rank, or years since graduation. Gender disparity in interventional radiology physician-industry relationships warrants further investigation and correction.OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to determine whether contrast medium volume and method of administration and baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate influence the efficacy of prophylactic hydration for prevention of acute kidney injury after contrast administration. MATERIALS AND METHODS. An online search of PubMed conducted on August 25, 2017, produced a total of 697 studies. After the reports were reviewed, nine were included in this study. The extracted data on all patients in these studies were separated into a group that received prophylactic hydration and a group that did not. The following three parameters were used for subgroup analysis contrast medium volume, contrast administration method, and baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate. The t test was performed, and study-level odds ratios with 95% CIs and p values were calculated. Tests of heterogeneity were conducted. RESULTS. When the volume of contrast agent administered exceeded 100 mL, hydration was beneficial in the prevention of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (odds ratio, 0.546). If the volume was less than 100 mL, hydration had no efficacy in preventing contrast-induced acute kidney injury (odds ratio, 0.917). Administration route and baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate exerted no effect on the efficacy of prophylactic hydration. CONCLUSION. For patients who receive less than 100 mL of contrast medium, the prevalent practice for contrast-enhanced CT studies, prophylactic hydration may not be necessary, regardless of the estimated glomerular filtration rate or route of contrast administration. For patients undergoing procedures requiring administration of large volumes of contrast medium, however, hydration is recommended to prevent contrast-induced acute kidney injury.OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to assess, by analyzing features of the primary tumor with 18F-FDG PET, the utility of deep machine learning with a convolutional neural network (CNN) in predicting the potential of newly diagnosed non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to metastasize to lymph nodes or distant sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Consecutively registered patients with newly diagnosed, untreated NSCLC were retrospectively included in a single-center study. PET images were segmented with local image features extraction software, and data were used for CNN training and validation after data augmentation strategies were used. The standard of reference for designation of N category was invasive lymph node sampling or 6-month follow-up imaging. Distant metastases developing during the study follow-up period were assessed by imaging (CT or PET/CT), in tissue obtained from new suspected sites of disease, and according to the treating oncologist's designation. RESULTS. A total of 264 patients with NSCLC participated in follow-up for a median of 25.2 months (range, 6-43 months). N category designations were available for 223 of 264 (84.5%) patients, and M category for all 264. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CNN for predicting node positivity were 0.74 ± 0.32, 0.84 ± 0.16, and 0.80 ± 0.17. The corresponding values for predicting distant metastases were 0.45 ± 0.08, 0.79 ± 0.06, and 0.63 ± 0.05. CONCLUSION. This study showed that using a CNN to analyze segmented PET images of patients with previously untreated NSCLC can yield moderately high accuracy for designation of N category, although this may be insufficient to preclude invasive lymph node sampling. The sensitivity of the CNN in predicting distant metastases is fairly poor, although specificity is moderately high.
