Objectives. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dentists' hand functionality (handgrip, tip-to-tip pinch, key pinch and palmar pinch strengths) and dental specialty (maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, pediatric dentistry), socio-demographic factors and hand-forearm anthropometric dimensions. Methods. A cross-sectional study was designed in which 720 certified dentists (330 males and 390 females) voluntarily participated in the study. A tape measure (±0.1 cm) and a digital caliper (±0.1 mm) were used to measure anthropometric dimensions. A Jamar dynamometer and pinch gauge were used to measure hand strength variables. Results. Hand strengths decreased with age and clinical experience, and were always greater in male than female dentists. Hand functionality is specialty-related among dentists because distinct dental specialties expose practitioners to different task demands. Like any other manual workers, dentists need more ergonomic and usable hand tools tailored not only to the intended application but also to the anthropometry of users.Since the end of the Cold War, health has gone from a peripheral concern in foreign policy negotiations to a prominent place on the global political agenda. While the rise of health onto the foreign policy agenda is by now old news, the driving forces behind its expansion into new political spheres remain understudied and undertheorized. This article builds on empirical findings from a four-country study of the integration of health into foreign policy, and proposes a conceptual approach to GHD to improve understanding of the conditions under which health is successfully positioned on the foreign policy agenda. Our approach consists of three dimensions features of institutions and the interest various actors represent in GHD; the ideational environment in which GHD operates; and issue characteristics of the specific health concern entering foreign policy. Within each dimension, we identify specific variables that, in combination, make up the explanatory power of the proposed approach. The proposed approach does not relate to, or build upon, a single social sciences, public health, or international relations (IR) theory, but can be seen as a heuristic device to identify dimensions and variables that may shape why certain health issues rise onto the foreign policy agenda.Gross motor development in the preschool phase depends on several factors that remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate whether level of habitual physical activity (HPA) and global cognitive function (CF) can be used as predictors of gross motor skills in Brazilian preschoolers and to verify their possible mediators. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 166 children, aged 3-5 years. Gross motor skills, HPA, CF and possible mediators (e.g., sex, prematurity) were evaluated. Preschoolers with little HPA, low CF, and girls were more likely to have gross motor performance below expected, but female gender did not mediate HPA or CF. Therefore, HPA and CF, in addition to females, may be independent predictors of delayed gross motor skills in Brazilian preschoolers.Green walls are becoming increasingly popular as pleasing architectural installations and functional systems in sustainable urban building designs. However, utilization of green walls as an aqueous treatment option has been primarily limited to grey water. This study evaluates select media as appropriate support for plants and microorganisms in a novel green wall system used to treat wastewater from craft and micro-breweries. The media must have hydraulic capacity to treat large volumes of brewery wastewater, be lightweight and commercially available, and provide structure for plant roots and biofilm development. Two expanded recycled glass aggregates (Growstone® and Poraver®) and a lightweight expanded clay aggregate (Hydroton®) were evaluated, having a d50 range from 6 to 12 mm. To assess media performance, this study determined hydraulic characteristics and evaluated the growth of leafy green plants and microorganism populations irrigated with 100% raw brewery wastewater. It was determined that media with a particle d50 = 12 mm would facilitate a hydraulic loading rate of 1623 m3/m2/day media under unsaturated conditions and not result in interstitial velocities that shear away biofilm. No significant difference in plant growth metrics, microorganism type or cell density were observed between media. There were nearly three orders of magnitude more bacteria colonies than yeast CFU in biofilm. This innovative application of green walls has the potential to provide manufacturers of fermented beverages with a treatment option that has a low capital cost, simple to operate, and a small footprint, thereby avoiding traditional treatment processes and/or high sewer use fees.Russia provides an important case study in its COVID-19 response by a country that has one of the largest epidemics, increasingly authoritarian government policies, and important domestic and international political influence. In this article, we describe and explain Russia's public health and social policy responses to COVID-19 - earlier in the pandemic when the concern was the border with China, to later when there were confirmed cases in all regions in the country. In the past, Russia has served as an interesting case for exploring global health politics and infectious diseases. Thus, we position our analysis of the COVID-19 response through a reflection on infectious disease control in the Soviet Union and contemporary Russia. We explore the following government control, contention with official statistics, (dis-)information, (mis-)trust, and vulnerabilities of medical care workers. We also discuss how Russia is reinforcing its role in global health during the pandemic, for example through vaccine development and foreign humanitarian aid.
