Groundwater is an important water source to consider when ensuring the safety of urban water supply. Groundwater contaminated by bacteria poses a potential health risk to the drinking water supply. This study focuses on the water supply of Liuzhou City, a famous industrial city in China. Analyses of the concentrations, spatial distribution, and pollution sources of bacteria in the groundwater were conducted based on samples collected from 27 wells during the wet and dry seasons in 2018. The total colony counts and total coliform were high during both the wet and dry seasons, posing a severe threat to the emergency water supply security for more than one million people in the city. The groundwater in Liuzhou City is generally contaminated by bacteria, with higher pollution levels in the northern urban-rural fringe and central urban areas. Domestic pollution is the main sources of groundwater bacteria. In addition, bacterially contaminated rivers (Liujiang River) passing through the urban area likely transfer bacteria to the groundwater due to the circulation of the groundwater and surface river water. Controlling the bacterial pollution of groundwater in this region requires adherence to a long-term management plan.

The revised Psychosocial Assessment Tool (PATrev) is a common family-level risk-based screening tool for pediatric oncology that has gained support for its ability to predict, at diagnosis, the degree of psychosocial support a family may require throughout the treatment trajectory. However, ongoing screening for symptoms and concerns (e.g., feeling alone, understanding treatment) remains underutilized. Resource limitations necessitate triaging and intervention based on need and risk. Given the widespread use of the PATrev, we sought to explore the association between family psychosocial risk, symptom burden (as measured by the revised Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS-r)), and concerns (as measured by the Canadian Problem Checklist (CPC)).

Families (n = 87) with children ≤ 18years of age (M = 11.72, male 62.1%) on or off treatment for cancer were recruited from the Alberta Children's Hospital. One parent from each family completed the PATrev and the CPC. Participants 8-18years of age completed the ESAS-r.

Risk category (universal/low risk = 67.8%, targeted/intermediate risk = 26.4%, clinical/high risk = 5.7%) predicted symptom burden (F

 = 4.57, p = .014) and concerns (F

 = 16.79, p < .001), such that universal risk was associated with significantly lower symptom burden and fewer concerns.

Family psychosocial risk is associated with cross-sectionally identified concerns and symptom burden, suggesting that resources might be prioritized for families with the greatest predicted need. Future research should evaluate the predictive validity of the PATrev to identify longitudinal concerns and symptom burden throughout the cancer trajectory.

This study aimed to determine the relationship between the personality traits of cancer patients and their preferences when receiving bad news.

In this descriptive correlational study, 200 cancer patients who were selected by the continuous sampling method participated. Patients self-reportedly completed the demographic and medical information questionnaire, the Measure of Patients' Preference (MPP) scale, and the short form of the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI).

The majority of participants were female (73%), 42.5% had higher education, and 47.5% suffered from breast cancer. In this study, the mean scores of extraversion and neuroticism in patients were 14.59 ± 2.47 and 15.17 ± 3.43, respectively. Regarding patients' preferences for receiving bad news, the score obtained by them in the content category was greater compared to two categories of context and support. This study showed a significant and negative correlation between neuroticism and patients' preferences in the support category (P < 0.001 and r =  - 0.265). Regarding the categories of the MPP, there was a significant relationship between gender (P = 0.018) and marital status (P = 0.049) with context category, education (P = 0.011) with content category, and marital status (P = 0.003) and employment (P = 0.009) with support category.

Moreover, the role of Vascular Adhesion Protein-1 in bone marrow hematopoiesis has remained unknown. Here we show that VAP-1, an adhesin and a primary amine oxidase producing hydrogen peroxide, is expressed on a subset of human HSC and bone marrow vasculature forming a hematogenic niche. Bulk and single-cell RNAseq analyses reveal that VAP-1+ HSC represent a transcriptionally unique small subset of differentiated and proliferating HSC, while VAP-1- HSC are the most primitive HSC. VAP-1 generated hydrogen peroxide acts via the p53 signaling pathway to regulate HSC proliferation. HSC expansion and differentiation into colony-forming units are enhanced by inhibition of VAP-1. Contribution of VAP-1 to HSC proliferation was confirmed with mice deficient of VAP-1, mice expressing mutated VAP-1 and using an enzyme inhibitor. In conclusion, VAP-1 expression allows the characterization and prospective isolation of a new subset of human HSC. Since VAP-1 serves as a check point-like inhibitor in HSC differentiation, the use of VAP-1 inhibitors enables the expansion of HSC.This study aimed to examine the relationship between electronic cigarette use and subsequent combustible cigarette use, controlling for confounding by using a propensity score method approach. Data from the first three annual waves of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study were analyzed (n = 6309). Participants were tobacco-naïve at Wave 1; used e-cigarettes exclusively (n = 414), used combustible cigarettes exclusively (n = 46), or not used any tobacco products (n = 5849) at Wave 2. We conducted entropy balancing propensity score analysis to examine the association between exclusive e-cigarette or cigarette initiation and subsequent cigarette use at Wave 3, adjusting for non-response bias, sampling bias, and confounding. Among tobacco-naïve youth, exclusive e-cigarette use was associated with greater risk for subsequent combustible cigarette smoking initiation (OR = 3.42, 95% CI = (1.99, 5.93)) and past 30-day combustible cigarette use (OR = 2.88, 95% CI = (1.22, 6.86)) in the following year. However, the latter risk was comparatively lower than the risk if youth started with a combustible cigarette (OR = 25.79, 95% CI = (9.68, 68.72)). Results of sensitivity analyses indicated that estimated effects were robust to unmeasured confounding. These effects are highly desirable when transplanting patients with non-neoplastic hematologic diseases, particularly AA patients. Here we retrospectively report the outcomes of 39 AA patients receiving a primed BM graft from MSD to 43 patients receiving a steady-state BM graft from MSD, otherwise transplanted using a uniform transplant platform. The graft had higher TNC and CD34 cell concentrations in the primed group (p  less then  0.001), and that was reflected in higher TNC and CD34 doses per kilogram of recipient in the primed group (p = 0.004 and 0.03, respectively). The OS for primed BM graft recipients was 97.4% and 78.9% for the steady-state BM graft recipients, p-value = 0.01. The cumulative incidence of death without GF was 2.6% in the primed group and 16.3% in the steady-state group, p-value = 0.03. There was no difference in GvHD incidence between the two groups. We confirm that priming improved the TNC and CD34 graft concentration and cell dose; this evidence along with other reported studies constitute reasonable evidence to prove that BM priming improve engraftment. We observed no increase in GvHD using primed BM graft.Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH), a key enzyme in the TCA cycle, participates in the formation of biofilms in Staphylococcus aureus, but it remains to be clarified whether it is involved in the formation of Bacillus cereus biofilms. In this study, we scanned the genome of B. cereus 0-9 and found a gene encoding isocitrate dehydrogenase (FRY47_22620) named icdH. The IcdH protein was expressed and purified. The enzyme activity assay showed that the protein had IDH activity dependent on NADP+, indicating that this gene encoded an IDH. The ΔicdH mutant and its complemented strains were obtained by a homologous recombination strategy, and crystal violet data and CLSM were measured. The results showed that the biofilm yield of the mutant ΔicdH decreased, and the biofilm morphology also changed, while the growth of ΔicdH was not affected. The extracellular pH and citric acid content results showed that the ΔicdH mutant exhibited citric acid accumulation and acidification of the extracellular matrix. In addition, the addition of excess Fe3+ restored the biofilm formation of the ΔicdH mutant. It is speculated that IDH in B. cereus may regulate biofilm formation by modulating intracellular redox homeostasis. In addition, we found that the icdH deletion of B. cereus 0-9 could result in a reduced sporulation rate, which was significantly different from sporulation in B. subtilis caused by interruption of the stage I sporulation process due to icdH loss. All the above results provide us with new insights for further research on IDH.Staphylococcus aureus is a common clinical bacterial pathogen that can cause a diverse range of infections. The establishment of a rapid and reliable assay for the early diagnosis and detection of S. aureus is of great significance. In this study, we developed a closed-tube loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the visual detection of S. aureus using the colorimetric indicator hydroxy naphthol blue (HNB). The LAMP reaction was optimized by adjusting the amplification temperature, the concentrations of Mg2+, dNTP, and HNB, and the incubation time. In the optimized reaction system, the specificity of LAMP for S. CX-5461 cell line aureus was 100%. The results established that this method accurately identified S. aureus, with no cross-reactivity with 14 non-S. aureus strains. The limit of detection (LOD) of LAMP was 8 copies/reaction of purified plasmid DNA or 400 colony-forming units/reaction of S. aureus. Compared with conventional PCR, LAMP lowered the LOD by tenfold. Finally, 220 clinically isolated strains of S.
