Recovery of proteins or peptides can be hampered by their adsorption to the CMD membrane as has been previously shown in-vitro

however, protein adsorption to CMD membranes has not been characterized following implantation in human brain tissue.

In this paper, we describe the pattern of proteins adsorbed to CMD membranes compared to that of the microdialysate and of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We retrieved CMD membranes from three surgically treated intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients, and analyzed protein adsorption to the membranes using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) in combination with nano-liquid mass spectrometry. We compared the proteome profile of three compartments; the CMD membrane, the microdialysate and ventricular CSF collected at time of CMD removal.

We found unique protein patterns in the molecular weight range of 10-35 kDa for each of the three compartments.

This study highlights the importance of analyzing the membranes in addition to the microdialysate when using CMD to sample proteins for biomarker investigation.Over the past decade there has been increased focus on targeting couples in HIV prevention efforts, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where HIV transmission primarily occurs through heterosexual contact, in the context of intersecting alcohol use and intimate partner violence (IPV). However, little is known about couples' general relationship functioning. This understanding is needed to augment couple-based HIV prevention programs and address risk for IPV. This paper presents data on domains of relationship functioning with 300 South African couples who were recruited for an HIV prevention study. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to determine the relevance of 17 individual items, as well as the overall factor structure of the questions. Results revealed three independent factors of relationship functioning relationship satisfaction, arguing, and open communication; an overarching construct of relationship functioning for these three domains was not observed in the data. Results provide insight into the structure of relationship functioning questions and subscales that can be used to assess South African adult romantic relationships. This may allow for a greater focus on aspects of relationships within couple-based HIV prevention programs going forward.Groundwater storage in alpine regions is essential for maintaining baseflows in mountain streams. Recent studies have shown that common alpine landforms (e.g., talus and moraine) have substantial groundwater storage capacity, but the hydrogeological connectivity between individual landforms has not been understood. learn more This study characterizes the hydrogeology of an alpine cirque basin in the Canadian Rocky Mountains that contains typical alpine landforms (talus, meadow, moraines) and hydrological features (tarn, streams, and springs). Geological, hydrological, and hydrochemical observations were used to understand the overall hydrogeological setting of the study basin, and three different geophysical methods (electrical resistivity tomography, seismic refraction tomography, and ground penetrating radar) were used to characterize the subsurface structure and connectivity, and to develop a hydrogeological conceptual model. Geophysical imaging shows that the talus is typically 20-40 m thick and highly heterogeneous. The meadow sediments are only up to 11 m thick but are part of a 30-40-m-thick accumulation of unconsolidated material that fills a bedrock overdeepening (i.e. a closed, subglacial basin). A minor, shallow groundwater system feeds springs on the talus and streams on the meadow, whereas a deep system in the moraine supplies most of the water to the basin outlet springs, thereby serving as a 'gate keeper' of the basin. Although the hydrologic functions of the talus in this study are substantially different from other locations, primarily due to differences in bedrock lithology and geomorphic processes, the general conceptual framework developed in this study is expected to be applicable to other alpine regions.Knowledge discovery and information extraction of large and complex datasets has attracted great attention in wide-ranging areas from statistics and biology to medicine. In this paper, integrating the Koopman operator and linear dynamical systems theory with support vector machines, we develop an ovel dynamic data mining framework to construct low-dimensional linear models that approximate the nonlinear flow of high-dimensional time-series data generated by unknown nonlinear dynamical systems. This framework then immediately enables pattern recognition, e.g., classification, of complex time-series data to distinguish their dynamic behaviors by using the trajectories generated by the reduced linear systems. Moreover, we demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of this framework through the problems of time-series classification in bioinformatics and healthcare, including cognitive classification and seizure detection with fMRI and EEG data, respectively. The developed Koopman dynamic learning framework then lays a solid foundation for effective dynamic data mining and promises a mathematically justified method for extracting the dynamics and significant temporal structures of nonlinear dynamical systems.To investigate the environmental impacts of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) while it was freshly processed (i.e. hot mixed asphalt or HMA) and after being subjected to weathering, three RAP materials, namely north-RAP, central-RAP, south-RAP, from three plants and one fresh HMA loose mix samples (Fresh-HMA) throughout New Jersey, USA underwent four different weathering processes including UV and precipitation weathering on unbounded RAP, UV and precipitation weathering on compacted RAP, weathering by heat and moisture cycles, and groundwater flow-through leaching. Batch experiments were conducted to mimic releasing of trace elements in weak acidic leachate from landfills. North-RAP and central-RAP released levels of Pb greater than the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) primary drinking water maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 15 μg/L. Novel two-column experiments (a RAP column followed by a soil column) were conducted to investigate the release of trace elements from RAP and the attenuation effect of soil on potential pollutants. The results of these experiments showed that pollutants released from RAPs such as Mn and Ni were largely attenuated in the soil. The results suggest that RAP can be used as an unbound material in environments except those acidic (i.e., pH less then 5 as in mines with sulfur-containing minerals and landfills with acidic environment).We examined how much large-scale and localized upward and downward currents contribute to the substorm current wedge (SCW), and how they evolve over time, using the THEMIS all-sky imagers (ASIs) and ground magnetometers. One type of events is dominated by a single large-scale wedge, with upward currents over the surge and broad downward currents poleward-eastward of the surge. The other type of events is a composite of large-scale wedge and wedgelets associated with streamers, with each wedgelet having comparable intensity to the large-scale wedge currents. Among 17 auroral substorms with wide ASI coverage, the composite current type is more frequent than the single large-scale wedge type. The dawn-dusk size of each wedgelet is ~ 600 km in the ionosphere (~ 3.2 RE in the magnetotail, comparable to the flow channel size). We suggest that substorms have more than one type of SCW, and the composite current type is more frequent.The literature on Sri Lankan Diopsidae is reviewed. Eight Diopsidae are now known to occur in Sri Lanka, five species in the genus Teleopsis and one species each in the genera Sphyracephala, Diopsis, and Cyrtodiopsis. The presence of Cyrtodiopsis requires confirmation to exclude the possibility of mislabelling. All five Teleopsis species are endemic, as are the Diopsis species and probably the Cyrtodiopsis species. Only Sphyracephala bipunctipennis Senior-White has a larger distribution as it also occurs in India. A key is presented for the Diopsidae of Sri Lanka. Three Teleopsis species were already known to occur in Sri Lanka T. ferruginea Röder, T. krombeini Feijen and T. maculata Feijen. These species form the T. ferruginea species group. Two new species are now described for this group Teleopsis neglectasp. nov. and Teleopsis sororasp. nov.Teleopsis ferruginea is redescribed, as an earlier redescription turned out to be based on a series of specimens of its sister species T. sororasp. nov. The other three Diopsidae of Sri Lanka are listed and illustrated. Allometric aspects of the five Teleopsis species are discussed. Three Teleopsis species are sexually dimorphic with regard to eye span, while two species are monomorphic. It is assumed that sexual dimorphism developed independently in the T. ferruginea species group.
