Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also known as co-sleepers and bassinets, are designed to allow parents to rest close to their infants at night, without the risk of SIDS. However they are not recommended for use up to 6 months of age when your baby is required to be moved into a cot, or a moses basket.

MFM home tester Mehack loved the fact that this model has a bassinet that can be lifted off to use around the house and the ability to rock manually. It was easy to assemble and even came with a travel bag.

Size

Cots and cots differ in size and size, with cots being a bit smaller than beds for cots. They can also be converted into toddler beds, while cot beds are generally only used for up to three years. old. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard - which can be converted into a toddler bed or a cot. If you'd like your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a larger cot, it's an excellent idea to choose the larger size.

MFM mom home test Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was slightly bigger than the Moses basket but not too big for her baby's room. Jasmine says it's easy to get the baby in and out of the cot for night feeds or for soothing, and that its quality is far superior to other cots she has seen that are cheap and flimsy.

Emily is another home-based tester, is thrilled by the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi Lora that is a lift-off, portable bassinet. It also rocks. It also has an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable liner that breathes. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for Best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. In twin bedside cot to International or European cot brands The Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to buy a new mattress as your baby grows. However, it will require an exclusive bedding set (60x120cm). Here's the perfect mattress for your cot.

Height

When selecting a bedside crib pick one that can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It must also be able to be lowered to the ground so that you can pull your baby towards you during night feedings or to soothe. This feature is particularly useful when you're recovering from an operation such as a C-section. For instance, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their babies from standard Moses baskets when the base is at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher level to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a well-liked option with one of our mom test subjects saying that it is easy to use with a collapsible side that is easy to press down at the touch of a button.

Be aware that a bedside or bassinet device is only suitable in the event that your baby can hold his head up with no assistance, which is typically around 6 months. This is due to the possibility of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to know that if you select a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a cot and vice versa, you must begin removing the sides once your child is ready for this, so that they don't climb out or get out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of cribs for bedside use, ranging from simple to extravagant. Some of the more luxurious options include features such as an inbuilt light and a soothing center that plays music and sounds and has two levels to help ease your baby back to sleep. Another option is the swivelling footrest, which makes it easier for you to reach your child to feed them. Certain models can be converted into a toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.

For instance, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air which was awarded Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that lets you pick up your newborn and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This is ideal for new mums recovering from Caesarean sections, or those who need to remain in bed for long periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, saying that it was simple to use and made reaching her baby easier particularly after her c-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It is equipped with a machine-washable liner, reflux incline and rocking function. It's a bit larger than the other cribs for bed we've tried, but it folds flat in its travel bag, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester Also, she praised the bedside crib's functionality. She claimed that it was designed for both parents and infants. It is easy to move and super-sturdy. She said that the bassinet's pivoting base was brilliant because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to facilitate access, especially for new mums recovering from c-sections.

Safety

The most important safety feature of a large bedside cot is that it is able to be moved up or down to allow parents to reach their baby when they need to feed, comfort them, or change their nappies. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from a C-section. Find a model that lets you lower one side at the press of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby up without having to get out of the bed. This is crucial, particularly as your baby grows and becomes more mobile. It is also important to avoid adding anything to the crib that increases the chance of suffocation or injury, like duvets and pillows, which can cause babies to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product problems, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For example they would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets or at least the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing the number of instances in which infants are trapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that can be converted to other modes such as play yards and bassinets. Several commenters suggested the CPSC include a different clause to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside sleepers that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that can be removed. The attachment can be permanently attached or disconnected when the product's not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will consider these comments when voting on the final rule that is expected to be released in November 2021.
