Dipterans exhibit a remarkable diversity of chromosome end structures in contrast to the conserved system defined by telomerase and short repeats. Within dipteran families, structure of chromosome termini is usually conserved within genera. With the aim to assess whether or not the evolutionary distance between genera implies chromosome end diversification, this report exploits two representatives of Sciaridae,
, and
.
Probes and plasmid microlibraries obtained by chromosome end microdissection, in situ hybridization, cloning, and sequencing are among the methodological approaches employed in this work.
The data argue for the existence of either specific terminal DNA sequences for each chromosome tip in
, or sequences common to all chromosome ends but their extension does not allow detection by in situ hybridization. Both sciarid species share terminal sequences that are significantly underrepresented in chromosome ends of
.
The data suggest an unusual terminal structure in
chromosomes compared to other dipterans investigated. A putative, evolutionary process of repetitive DNA expansion that acted differentially to shape chromosome ends of the two flies is also discussed.

Antioxidant enzymes as well as physiological and biochemical changes were measured monthly at 2 and 5 °C plus 2 days at 20 °C for shelf life. At 2 °C, CI symptoms were higher than at 5 °C, and 'Moro' and 'Tarocco' had significantly higher CI than 'Sanguinello' and 'Sanguine'. 'Moro' and 'Tarocco' had the highest electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and polyphenol oxidase activity and lower phenylalanine ammonia-lyase compared with 'Sanguinello' and 'Sanguine'. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs revealed that 'Moro' and 'Tarocco' showed severe fractures in the flavedo due to CI. 'Sanguinello' and 'Sanguine' were more tolerant to CI due to an increase of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, which could prevent the loss of membrane integrity and alleviate CI symptoms. Hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) for cultivars and temperatures revealed four main clusters. The first cluster included 'Moro' and 'Tarocco' at 2 °C, and the second cluster included 'Moro' and 'Tarocco' at 5 °C. The third cluster involved 'Sanguinello' and 'Sanguine' at 2 °C, and the fourth cluster included 'Sanguinello' and 'Sanguine' at 5 °C. The order of susceptibility of cultivars to CI was 'Moro' > 'Tarocco' > 'Sanguine' > 'Sanguinello'.Current standard EN 50463-2 indicates the tests and the requirements to be satisfied for an energy measurement system of a traction unit for railway applications. Some of these tests are to be done with several harmonics superposed on the rated voltage, respectively current. However, no calibration systems satisfying the standard requirements were available few years ago. The work performed in the EURAMET project "MyRailS" leads to the development of fictive power sources and reference measurement systems described in this paper. Therefore, it is possible to generate distorted 25 kV-50 Hz voltages with harmonics up to 5 kHz and 90° phase-fired currents up to 500 A with harmonics up to 5 kHz. The generated power is measured by developed traceable reference systems with accuracy better than 0.5%.The re-engineering of primary health care (PHC) called for the establishment of ward-based outreach teams as a reform strategy to bridge the gap between health facilities and communities. The Nkangala district established ward-based outreach teams in 2012. We used process evaluation to assess the acceptability of the outreach teams from the perspectives of those involved in the implementation as well as the clients who are the recipients of the outreach services in order to describe how the programme benefits the recipients, the staff, and the health system. Data were collected through interviews with multiple data sources. A thematic analysis was done using NVivo 11. The outreach programme is acceptable to the recipients and staff. The acceptability translated into measurable benefits for the recipients and the health system. Health benefits included increased access to services, support for treatment adherence, and linkages to various sector departments for social support. Since the inception of outreach teams, the district has recorded low utilisation of PHC services and improved priority indicators such as immunisation coverage, early antenatal bookings, treatment adherence, TB cure rates, and decreased default rates. The positive effects of the outreach teams on indicators underscore the need to roll the programme out to all sub-districts.In this study, the hypothesis that supplementation with methionine (Met) as DL-Met (DLM) in excess of the National Research Council (NRC) recommendations improves the antioxidant system in broilers was investigated. Day-old male Cobb-500 broilers (n = 72) were divided into three groups which were fed a control diet or diets supplemented with two levels of DLM in which the concentrations of Met + Cys exceeded the recommendations of NRC by 15-20% (group DLM 1) or 30-40% (group DLM 2), respectively. The three groups of broilers did not show differences in body weight gains, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio. However, broilers of groups DLM 1 and DLM 2 had higher concentrations of glutathione (GSH) in liver and thigh muscle and lower concentrations of cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) in heat-processed thigh muscle than broilers of the control group. Itacnosertib supplier Concentrations of several oxidation products of phytosterols in heat-processed thigh muscle were also reduced in groups DLM 1 and DLM 2; however, the concentration of total oxidation products of phytosterols was not different between the three groups. The study shows that DLM supplementation improved the antioxidant status due to an increased formation of GSH and reduced the formation of COPs during heat-processing in thigh muscle.
