The protective effect of dealcoholized red wine on human health has been partially associated with its polyphenolic components, suggesting that the pool of polyphenols, including flavonoids and anthocyanins, can be responsible for the functional effects of this beverage. We hypothesize a new role of red wine polyphenols (RWp) in modulating the antioxidant potential of erythrocytes, protecting them against oxidative stress. We previously demonstrated that RWp activated the Plasma Membrane Redox System (PMRS), which is involved in neutralizing plasma free radicals. Here, we investigated the underlying mechanism triggered by RWp in the activation of PMRS via the involvement of GSH. Hence, treatment of human erythrocytes with RWp (73 μg/mL Gallic Acid Equivalents) increased GSH intracellular concentration, which depends upon the activation of glutathione reductase (GR) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), whose enzymatic activities increase of about 30% and 47%, respectively. Changes in the GSH pathway induced by RWp were associated with a slight but significant increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS). We conclude that the pro-oxidant effect of RWp promoted an adaptive stress response in human erythrocytes, which enhances their antioxidant defense.Telehealth interventions offer a practical platform to support adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors' mental health needs after treatment, yet efficacy data are lacking. We evaluated an online, group-based, videoconferencing-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention ('Recapture Life') in a 3-arm randomized-controlled trial comparing Recapture Life with an online peer-support group, and a waitlist control, with the aim of testing its impact on quality of life, emotional distress and healthcare service use. Forty AYAs (Mage = 20.6 years) within 24-months of completing treatment participated, together with 18 support persons. No groupwise impacts were measured immediately after the six-week intervention. However, Recapture Life participants reported using more CBT skills at the six-week follow-up (OR = 5.58, 95% CI = 2.00-15.56, p = 0.001) than peer-support controls. Recapture Life participants reported higher perceived negative impact of cancer, anxiety and depression at 12-month follow-up, compared to peer-support controls. Post-hoc analyses suggested that AYAs who were further from completing cancer treatment responded better to Recapture Life than those who had completed treatment more recently. While online telehealth interventions hold promise, recruitment to this trial was challenging. As the psychological challenges of cancer survivorship are likely to evolve with time, different support models may prove more or less helpful for different sub-groups of AYA survivors at different times.Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder of hemoglobin, leading to chronic hemolytic anemia and multiple organ damage. We exposed SCD mice to recurrent hypoxia/reoxygenation (rec H/R), a consolidated model for SBD. This case report describes the lingual orthodontic treatment of an adult skeletal Class III patient with mandibular deviation to the left side, lateral open bite, unilateral posterior crossbite, zero overbite and negative overjet. The lower incisors were already retroclined to compensate with the skeletal discrepancy. The patient was treated by asymmetric molar extraction in the mandibular arch to retract the lower incisors and correct the dental midline, with the help of intermaxillary elastics. Lingual appliance was used with over-torqued lower anterior teeth's brackets to control the torque of mandibular incisors. After a 30-month treatment, satisfactory smile and facial esthetics and good occlusion was achieved. A 12-month follow-up confirmed that the outcome was stable. Asymmetric molar extraction could be a viable option to retract mandibular incisors in Class III malocclusion with lower dental midline deviation.This study aimed to investigate the effects of an acute bout of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) and moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) on affective responses in inactive women. Thirty women with normal body mass index (BMI) and 30 women with BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 participated in the study. All participants completed a graded exercise test and performed two exercise sessions (HIIE and MICE) in random order. Affective responses were assessed during and after each exercise session, using the rating of perceived exertion (RPE), Self-Assessment-Manikin (SAM), and Subjective Exercise Experience Scale (SEES). The results showed that the RPE scores were significantly higher in HIIE than in MICE. HIIE resulted in significantly lower pleasure scores using the SAM while arousal and dominance scores were significantly higher with HIIE compared to MICE. Positive well-being scores using the SEES were significantly lower with HIIE and both psychological distress and fatigue scores were significantly higher with HIIE. The results showed that affective responses with MICE were more positive than with HIIE, but no differences were found between normal and overweight/obese women. Based on these results, MICE may be a more acceptable exercise program for inactive women regardless of their weight status.The relationship between preexisting major psychiatric disorders and outcomes of spine surgery for degenerative thoracic/lumbar disease remains unclear. A 5% subset of inpatients was randomly selected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 10,109 inpatients aged 18 years or over with degenerative thoracic/lumbar disease and underwent spine surgery met inclusion criteria. Major psychiatric disorders diagnosed by psychiatrists preceding index surgery, including anxiety disorder, depression disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and dementia, were identified. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders, and their differential risks on in-hospital and post-discharge outcomes were examined. 10.4% had major psychiatric disorders, of which depression (6.6%) and anxiety (4.9%) were most common. Logistic regression revealed increased risks of ventilator use in depression (OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.04-2.54, p less then 0.05), extended hospitalization length in bipolar (OR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.08-2.89, p less then 0.05), and higher rehabilitation utilization in depression (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.06-1.47, p less then 0.01) and bipolar (OR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.04-2.76, p less then 0.05). Those patients with anxiety had a decreased risk of longer hospitalization duration (OR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.60-0.98, p less then 0.05), while those with dementia and schizophrenia had no change in risks. The selected matrices were polypropylene (PP) and poly (lactic acid) (PLA). As known, PP corresponds to a non-polar homo-chain polymer and a commodity, while PLA is a biodegradable polar hetero-chain polymer. To obtain the magnetic nanocomposites, magnetite supported on thermally reduced graphene oxide (TrGOFe3O4 nanomaterial) to these polymer matrices was added. The TrGOFe3O4 nanomaterials were obtained by a co-precipitation method using two types of TrGO obtained by the reduction at 600 °C and 1000 °C of graphite oxide. Two ratios of 2.51 and 9.61 of the magnetite precursor (FeCl3) and TrGO were used to produce these nanomaterials. Consequently, four types of nanomaterials were obtained and characterized. Nanocomposites were obtained using these nanomaterials as filler by melt mixer method in polypropylene (PP) or polylactic acid (PLA) matrix, the filler contents were 3, 5, and 7 wt.%. Results showed that TrGO600-based nanomaterials presented higher coercivity (Hc = 8.5 Oe) at 9.61 ratio than TrGO1000-based nanomaterials (Hc = 4.2 Oe). PLA and PP nanocomposites containing 7 wt.% of filler presented coercivity of 3.7 and 5.3 Oe, respectively. Although many studies have focused on the epidemiology of western honey bee (Apis mellifera) viruses at the colony level, the dynamics of virus infection within colonies remains poorly explored. In this study, the two main variants of the ubiquitous honey bee virus DWV as well as three major honey bee viruses (SBV, ABPV and BQCV) were analyzed from Varroa-destructor-parasitized pupae. More precisely, RT-qPCR was used to quantify and compare virus genome copies across honey bee pupae at the individual and subfamily levels (i.e., patrilines, sharing the same mother queen but with different drones as fathers). Additionally, virus genome copies were compared in cells parasitized by reproducing and non-reproducing mite foundresses to assess the role of this vector. Only DWV was detected in the samples, and the two variants of this virus significantly differed when comparing the sampling period, colonies and patrilines. Moreover, DWV-A and DWV-B exhibited different infection patterns, reflecting contrasting dynamics. Altogether, these results provide new insight into honey bee diseases and stress the need for more studies about the mechanisms of intra-colonial disease variation in social insects.Background Stress concentrated at an implant's neck may affect bone-to-implant contact (BIC). The objective of this study was to evaluate four different implant neck designs using two different drilling protocols on the BIC. Methods Ninety-six implants were inserted in 12 minipigs calvarium. Implants neck designs evaluated were type 1-6 coronal flutes (CFs), 8 shallow microthreads (SMs); type 2-6 CFs,4 deep microthreads (DMs); type 3-4 DMs; type 4-2 CFs, 8 SMs. Two groups of forty-eight implants were inserted with a final drill diameter of 2.8 mm (DP1) or 3.2 mm (DP2). Animals were sacrificed after 1 and 3 months, total-BIC (t-BIC) and coronal-BIC (c-BIC) were evaluated by nondecalcified histomorphometry analysis. Results At 1 month, t-BIC ranged from 85-91% without significant differences between implant types or drilling protocol. Flutes on the coronal aspect impaired the BIC at 3 m. c-BIC of implant types with 6 CFs was similar and significantly lower than that of implant types 3 and 4. c-BIC of implant type 4 with SMs was highest of all implant types after both healing periods.
