A 21-well paper-based microbial fuel cell array with enhanced sensitivity was developed as a powerful yet simple screening method to accurately and simultaneously characterize bacterial electrogenicity. S. aureus, E. faecalis, and S. agalactiae exhibited distinct electrogenic capabilities, and their power generations were comparable to that of the well-known Gram-negative exoelectrogen, Shewanella oneidensis. Importantly, this system was used to begin a large-scale transposon screen to examine the genes involved in electrogenicity by the human pathobiont S. aureus. In this paper, an elastic poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) piezoelectric yarn for the application of a muscle patch sensor is presented. The electrospinning method is used to fabricate the piezoelectric yarn, and different parameters were used to control the orientation and structure of piezoelectric fibers. We further develop a post-alignment process to reorganize the orientation of fibers and to reshape fiber microstructures. Two unique microstructures of piezoelectric fibers that have an excellent elastic performance were identified. This piezoelectric yarn is composed of skewed and crimped fibers that align along the elongation direction, and it can be cyclically stretched up to 65% strain with good linearity, durability, and repeatability. Its mechanical behavior is superior to randomly distributed and fully straightened piezoelectric fibers, and it is suitable for long-term use of larger strain sensing. Our study demonstrated that this piezoelectric yarn can be stretched for more than 12 h under a repeated 1 Hz cyclic deformation. Using this elastic piezoelectric yarn, a muscle patch sensor that can be attached to the skin over human muscles for real-time monitoring is developed. The concentric, eccentric, and isometric contractions of biceps and triceps can be measured simultaneously to study their contraction behaviors. To further verify whether this patch sensor can be used under intense exercise conditions, the contraction behavior of a soleus muscle during stationary jumping and running is monitored to demonstrate sensor performance. Finally, this patch sensor is sewed onto a chest band, and it is verified that both breathing movement and heartbeat can be monitored.Understanding the adsorption and diffusion of CO2 and N2 in lignite at high temperature is of great significance for fire prevention and control. Considering the influence of temperature on coal structure, molecular structure models of lignite at 298.15, 323.15, 423.15, and 523.15 K were constructed by molecular mechanics and dynamics, and grand canonical Monte Carlo molecular simulation was conducted for single-component and two-component systems under different temperatures, pressures, and gas ratios. The adsorption capacity was positively correlated with the pressure and molar ratio of CO2 but negatively correlated with the temperature. The adsorption amount of CO2 (1.060 mmol/g) was generally larger than that of N2 (0.069 mmol/g), showing a greater selectivity. However, CO2 was more sensitive to temperature, and the adsorption amount decreased faster with the increase in temperature. At high temperature, the adsorption amount of CO2 and N2 is basically equal, both of which are at a low level. The CO2 isosteric heat of adsorption (7.46-8.84 kcal/mol) varies significantly with temperature. The interaction energy is consistent with the change trend of adsorption quantity, and van der Waals energy plays a dominant role in adsorption. Injecting CO2 and N2 at the high temperature stage has a poor extinguishing effect, which can only dilute oxygen content and exchange heat, and the advantage of CO2 will be lost. It may be more effective using liquid nitrogen which has the properties of low temperature and high specific heat capacity. The results are of great significance to improve the efficiency of fire prevention and suppression in underground coal mines. To assess the in vitro activity of five naturally occurring phenolic compounds (ferulic acid, apocynin, magnolol, honokiol, and thymol) on mycelial growth and type B trichothecene mycotoxin accumulation by Fusarium graminearum, three complementary approaches were adopted. First, a high-throughput photometric continuous reading array allowed a parallel quantification of F. graminearum hyphal growth and reporter TRI5 gene expression directly on solid medium. Second, RT-qPCR confirmed the regulation of TRI5 expression by the tested compounds. Third, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis allowed quantification of deoxynivalenol (DON) and its acetylated forms released upon treatment with the phenolic compounds. Altogether, the results confirmed the activity of thymol and an equimolar mixture of thymol-magnolol at 0.5 mM, respectively, in inhibiting DON production without affecting vegetative growth. The medium pH buffering capacity after 72-96 h of incubation is proposed as a further element to highlight compounds displaying trichothecene inhibitory capacity with no significant fungicidal effect.Poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) displays promising potential in hard tissue repair and orthopedic surgery due to its adaptable mechanical performance, good chemical resistance, and bioinertness. However, the low biointerfacial affinity of pure PEEK implants and the decrease of mechanical strength after processing greatly limit their clinical applications. In this work, the influences on mechanical performance and biointerfacial affinity of the PEEK/nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) composites are systematically investigated. Results show that the mechanical performance of PEEK/nHA composites was improved by adjusting the nHA content. The maximum values of the tensile, compressive, bending, and impact strength of the composites were increased by approximately 16.2, 25, 54, and 21%, respectively, when compared with that of pure PEEK. Studies in vitro show that PEEK/nHA composites display good cytocompatibility and promote the biomimic formation of HA, adhesion, and proliferation of L929 cells on the surface. Studies in vivo demonstrate that, compared to the pure PEEK, PEEK/nHA composites exhibit higher biointerfacial affinity, including the adhesion and encapsulation of muscle tissues on the surface of the implants and the suppression of inflammatory reaction around the implants. Our findings could pave the way for extensive applications of PEEK/nHA composites in hard tissue repair, particularly orthopedic surgery. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the most critical reactions that limit the efficiency of fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and metal-air batteries. Therefore, a need exists to develop cost-effective and highly active alternative electrocatalysts for ORR and OER. This study investigates the influence of metal coordination fashion on electrocatalytic ORR and OER activities among three types of Co-Mn bimetallic oxides (CMOs) tunnel-type (CMO_T), layer-type (CMO_L), and spinel-type (CMO_S) structures. An electrochemical evaluation for CMOs verifies that CMO_L has the highest ORR and OER specific activities, which is relatively better than the previously reported bifunctional metal oxides. Additionally, atomic configuration analysis for the oxides suggests that the excellent ORR and OER activities of CMO_L result from the difference in Co and Mn coordination states. This paper not only presents an excellent electrocatalyst for alkaline fuel cells and water electrolyzers but also provides an important guideline for the design of oxygen electrocatalysts.Hydrogen-peroxide-based low-temperature sterilization is a new sterilization technology for temperature-dependent medical devices. The effect of the process parameters of hydrogen-peroxide-based sterilizer on the sterilization performance of process challenge devices (PCDs) needs to be investigated. Sterilant amount, operating temperature, vacuum pressure, diffusion time, and chamber loading of the sterilizer on the sterilization performance of PCDs were adjusted. 2'-3'-cyclic GMP-AMP Sodium Seven PCDs with various morphologies and material containing biological indicators (BI) (EZTest, Geobacillus stearothermophilus) were used to evaluate the sterilization performance. The sterilization success rates of PCDs were 86, 71, and 57% with controlled temperature and pressure, diffusion time, and sterilant volume injection, respectively. The PCD material and structure also obviously affected sterilization performance. The sterilization of PCD A is the least successful for all parameters. Meanwhile, the sterilization of PCD B was influenced by the diffusion time and the sterilant injection volume. PCD B and PCD C were successfully sterilized by controlling the temperature and pressure. The weights and volume of the sterilization loading chamber resulted in a different sterilization performance. Sterilization performances of PCD 1, PCD 2, and PCD 3 were less then 70, less then 90, and 100%, respectively. Sterilant volume, sterilant diffusion time, pressure, temperature, PCD types, and chamber loading were proven to be important process parameters of sterilizer that affect the sterilization performance of vaporized-hydrogen-peroxide-based sterilizers.Adefovir is regarded as a potential antiviral agent. However, it cannot be considered as a valuable drug candidate due to its high polarity that limits its permeability across the human intestinal mucosa. When the ribose phosphate group of adefovir is replaced by the isopolar phosphonomethyl ether functionality, it neutralizes the negative charge of the drug. This makes the drug lipid-soluble and potent to diffuse across the cell membrane. The prodrug adefovir dipivoxil is regarded as a potent antiviral drug against hepatitis B virus (HBV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Rauscher murine leukemia virus (R-MuLV), murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). The correlation between the structure and the dynamics of adefovir dipivoxil is determined by measuring the principal components of chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) tensor, site-specific spin-lattice relaxation time, and molecular correlation time at crystallograpof antiviral drug.Understanding the structure and arrangement of hybrid metal halides and their contribution to the optoelectronic properties is, thus far, a challenging topic. In particular, new materials composed of d10 metal halides and pyridinium cations are still largely unexplored. Therefore, we report the synthesis and characterization of six Hg(II) salts built up from (Hg2Cl6)2- or (HgX4)2- anions (X = Cl, Br, I) and 2,2'-bipyridium (2,2'-Hbipy)+, 2,2'-bipyridine-1,1'-diium (2,2'-H2bipy)2+, or 1,10-phenantrolinium (1,10-Hphen)+ cations, using the same experimental conditions. All of them have been characterized by PXRD, EA, FTIR-ATR, and 1H NMR spectroscopies; single-crystal X-ray diffraction; and TG/DTA determinations. The study of their packing via Hirshfeld surface analysis and 3D deformation density mapping revealed the contributions of the intermolecular interactions to the structural arrangement, notably, the effect of the cation planarity on them. Successively, periodic DFT calculations showed that (i) the valence and conducting bands are mainly composed of the p orbitals of the halide and the organic cation, respectively, and (ii) the corresponding band gap depends mainly on the halide.
