Skilful projection of the impacts of global changes on marine systems depends on better representation of the mechanisms that link processes across scales from the sub-microscopic to the oceanic. In normal conditions this activity is responsive to behavioural context, changing as an individual switches between directed tasks and task-free conditions. A key feature of such changes is the movement of the brain between corresponding critical and sub-critical states, with these dynamics supporting efficient cognitive processing. Breakdowns in processing efficiency can occur, however, in brain disorders such as depression. It was therefore hypothesised that depressive symptoms would be related to reduced intrinsic activity responsiveness to changes in behavioural state. This was tested in a mixed group of major depressive disorder patients (n = 26) and healthy participants (n = 37) by measuring intrinsic EEG activity temporal structure, quantified with detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), in eyes-closed (EC) and eyes-open task-free states and contrasting between the conditions. The degree to which DFA values changed between the states was found to correlate negatively with depressive symptoms. DFA values did not differ between states in those with higher symptom levels, meaning that the brain remained in a less flexible sub-critical condition. This sub-critical condition in the EC state was further found to correlate with levels of maladaptive rumination. This may reflect a general cognitive inflexibility resulting from a lack in neural activity reactivity that may predispose people to overly engage in self-directed attention. These results provide an initial link between intrinsic activity reactivity and psychological features found in psychiatric disorders.Butterfly Monitoring Schemes (BMSs) engage the public in conservation and provide data sets that cover broad geographical areas over long timescales. Most existing BMSs are in temperate climates; however, the Israeli Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (BMS-IL), established in 2009, is a notable exception as it encompasses a large climatic gradient from Euro-Siberian through Mediterranean to hyper-arid regions. Israel's climate poses challenges in analyzing data from year-round butterfly activity, as in other tropical or arid countries. The Regional Generalized Additive Model (Regional GAM) is a butterfly phenology and abundance model based on repeat visits throughout species' flight season. We tested the applicability of Regional GAM for species with complex flight seasonality (e.g., multivoltine) by comparing estimated abundance and seasonal indices for the full data set and rarefied subsets. Herein, we propose an interesting strategy to alleviate the shuttle effect of lithium-sulfur battery by utilizing ferroelectric metal-organic framework (FMOF) as a host material for the first time. Compared to other MOF with same structure but without ferroelectricity and commercial carbon black, the cathode based on FMOF exhibits a low capacity decay and high cycling stability. These results demonstrate that the polarization switching behaviors of FMOF under the discharge voltage of lithium-sulfur battery can effectively trap polysulfides by polar-polar interactions, decrease polysulfides shuttle and improve the electrochemical performance of lithium-sulfur battery.We propose a Bayesian optimal phase II (BOP2) design for clinical trials with a time-to-event endpoint (eg, progression-free survival [PFS]) or co-primary endpoints consisted of a time-to-event endpoint and a categorical endpoint (eg, PFS and toxicity). We use an exponential-inverse gamma model to model the time to event. At each interim, the go/no-go decision is made by comparing the posterior probabilities of the event of interest with an adaptive probability cutoff. The BOP2 design is flexible in the number of interim looks and applicable to both single-arm and two-arm trials. The design maximizes the power for detecting effective treatments, with a well-controlled type I error, thereby bridging the gap between Bayesian designs and frequentist designs. The BOP2 design is easy to implement. Its stopping boundary can be enumerated and included in study protocol before the onset of the trial for single-arm studies. Simulation studies show that the BOP2 design has favorable operating characteristics, with higher power and lower risk of incorrectly terminating the trial than some Bayesian phase II designs. Yet, hepatitis C (HCV)-infected liver transplant (LT) patients occasionally achieve operational tolerance. We investigated the mechanisms through which HCV infection modulates donor-specific T cell responses following LT and the influence of HCV eradication. We generated T cell lines from HCV-infected LT and non-LT patients before and after HCV eradication and quantified alloreactive responses using cell lines expressing single-HLA class-I antigens in the presence/absence of PD-1/CTLA-4 blockade. HCV-specific CD8+ T cells cross-reacted with allogeneic class-I HLA molecules. HCV-positive LT recipients exhibited a higher proportion of CD8+ T cells coexpressing inhibitory receptors (PD-1/CTLA4) than HCV-negative LT, and their expression correlated with CXCL10 plasma levels. This resulted in decreased antidonor and third-party proliferative responses, which were significantly reversed by HCV eradication. PD-1/CTLA-4 blockade increased the proportion of HCV-specific CD8+ T cells reacting against donor only before viral clearance.
