Cigarette smoke exposure significantly influenced GDAP1 expression depending on the hippocampal region but was not influenced by guanyl cyclase. In conclusion, cigarette smoke exposure alone had an effect on GDAP1 amount in both regions. Therewith, GDAP1might be a biomarker for substance addiction in general.The observed heterogeneity in negative symptom treatment response may be partly attributable to inadequate measurement tools or limitations in methods of analysis. Previous Item Response Theory models of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) have only examined samples of chronic patients and with mixed results. We examined the scalability of the negative subscale embedded in the PANSS and subsequently explored negative symptom trajectories across four weeks of amisulpride treatment. Data were derived from the OPTiMiSE trial comprising 446 patients with first-episode schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorder. Using the Rasch Model to examine psychometric properties of the PANSS negative subscale, we found that the composite score across items was not an adequate measure of negative symptom severity. Consequently, we chose an exploratory statistical approach involving Principal Component Analysis which yielded one significant component clustering into two significant symptom trajectories 1) Subtle but constant decrease in negative symptom severity (N = 323; 72%), and 2) symptom instability across visits (N = 19; 4%). Explorative analytic methods as presented here may pave the way for more efficient and sensitive methods of analyzing negative symptom response in research and in clinical practice.Background Equine influenza virus is a highly contagious respiratory pathogen that causes pyrexia, anorexia, lethargy and coughing in immunologically naïve horses. The aims of this study were to i) identify the equine influenza vaccination rate as reported in 2016 by horse owners in the United Kingdom (UK); ii) examine the demographics of owners and horses which were associated with significantly lower influenza vaccination rates and iii) explore factors that influence horse owners' decisions around influenza vaccine uptake. This scoping review summarises for the first time the extent, range, and nature of global research activity on approaches for improving AMS in farmers and veterinarians involved in livestock farm animal management, health & well-being. Methods In November 2017 AGRICOLA, CAB Abstracts, EMBASE, MEDLINE, VetsRev and the Web of Science were searched. Studies were selected by two reviewers with 30 % of excluded and all included studies being independently reviewed by another reviewer. Inclusion criteria were primary studies or literature reviews focusing on antimicrobial use (AMU) in farming or veterinary practices for food-producing animals. Outcomes were changes in, or factors influencing farmers' or veterinarians' AMS. ExclusAMP, in the cattle and pig livestock sector, included education, veterinarians' positive attitudes towards AMU reduction, and diagnostic. For farmers, significant facilitators to reduction of AMU were most frequently related to farming management practices. Conclusion This review describes a scarcity of robust study designs and recommendations can be confidently made for better designed studies. Furthermore, greater consideration needs to be given to the outcome measures used in such studies. Nevertheless, the review summarises the evidence on the effectiveness of interventions and significant facilitators to farmers' and veterinarians' AMS, which can provide best currently available evidence to guide improvements in different livestock sectors.The dairy value chain of Nairobi is comprised, in its majority, of small-scale independent enterprises that operate within a complex interlinked system. In this complexity, the coordination and power structures of the system may have major influences on the management of dairy food safety. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the governance structure and challenges faced by stakeholders throughout the Nairobi dairy value chain and assess their potential implications on food safety. Qualitative data were collected through focus group discussions and key informant interviews based on a dairy value chain mapping framework previously developed. Thematic analysis enabled identification of governance themes, key challenges and analysis of their implications on food safety. Themes were organized depending on their association with farmers (informal settlement or peri-urban), dairy cooperatives, dairy traders, processing companies, retailers or government officers. The identified governance themes inclty of the relationships between them. Many of the governance themes demonstrate the linkages that are both beneficial or confrontational between the formal and informal sectors, and between industry and regulatory authorities, with possible direct food safety consequences. Findings obtained provide indications to decision-makers of potential governance areas that could help improve efficiency and food safety along the dairy value chain.
