We track the historical underpinnings and policy developments that have led to stringent vaccine entry requirements today. We also discuss the political issues raised by health measures imposed on borders and discuss the reasons behind some clear regional differences. Almost no European countries currently have vaccine entry requirements, while at the other end of the spectrum, the majority of countries in the African region do, making vaccine entry requirements a global south phenomenon. We argue that vaccine entry requirements should be reassessed in the future as an underused public health tool, likely to become increasingly common. Vaccine entry requirements have proved effective in controlling the international spread of yellow fever but more can be done to ensure better use of this measure. Caution is needed due to the close links between public health and politics, evident since the first travel restriction in quarantines.

Transitioning from the hospital to community is a vulnerable point in patients' care trajectory, yet little is known about this experience within the context of palliative care. While some studies have examined the patient and caregiver experience, no study to date has synthesized the literature on the healthcare provider's perspective on their role and experience facilitating these transitions.

The purpose of this systematic review was to understand the experience and perspective of healthcare providers who support the transition of patients receiving palliative care as they move from acute care to community settings.

We searched four databases MEDLINE, Embase, ProQuest and CINAHL for studies published in English from 1995 until May 22, 2020. Four reviewers screened records using the following selection criteria (1) peer-reviewed empirical study, (2) adult sample, (3) quadies exploring the experiences of healthcare providers in the community who receive patients from acute care and provide them with palliative care at home.

This review identified studies from a range of relatively high-income countries that included a diverse sample of healthcare providers. The results indicate that healthcare providers experience multiple complex roles during the transition facilitation process, and future research should examine how to better assist clinicians in supporting these transitions within the context of palliative care provision.

Adolescents are susceptible to mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) acquired from collisions in contact sports, which are often sustained in a repetitive nature (repetitive mild traumatic brain injuries; RmTBIs), and cause compounding, sexually dimorphic neurological deficits. Neuroinflammation accompanies RmTBIs and may be a central driving force for chronic neurological decline. To date, the impact of neuroinflammation and sex-specific dynamics during adolescent RmTBIs has been understudied. A lateral impact model (LIM) was developed that mimics the biomechanical forces commonly experienced in human mTBIs. Here, we report novel sexually dimorphic neurobehavioral and -inflammatory responses using LIM to model adolescent RmTBIs. We first subjected adolescent male C57Bl/6 mice to one, three, or five RmTBIs at 24-h intervals and quantified neurobehavioral deficits, and brain volumetric and structural changes by magnetic resonance imaging. Five RmTBIs caused significant motor deficits, increased brain volume in cortex, hippocampus, and corpus callosum, and reduced white matter integrity in the corpus callosum. We then compared neurobehavioral deficits in adolescent male and female mice and observed sex-specific deficits in motor function, whereas both sexes had dysfunction in learning and memory. Flow cytometric quantification of neuroinflammatory responses revealed time- and sex-dependent infiltration of peripheral macrophages and T cells and male-specific decreases in microglia number. Using immunohistochemistry, we report specific microglia density decreases in male mice in the motor cortex and thalamus. We show novel neuroinflammatory responses after adolescent brain injuries that expands the current understanding of RmTBI pathophysiology in this critical neurodevelopmental period.Catheter-related thrombosis represents one of the most common complications following central venous access insertion. Thermosensitive polymers, in situ polymerization, in situ cross-linking, and self-assembling peptides are the most investigated approaches to obtain injectability.Aim of the present work was the preparation and characterization of a novel bioactive scaffold, in form of injectable microspheres, for cardiac repair. Gellan/gelatin microspheres were prepared by a water-in-oil emulsion and loaded by adsorption with Insulin-like growth factor 1 to promote tissue regeneration. Obtained microspheres underwent morphological, physicochemical and biological characterization, including cell culture tests in static and dynamic conditions and in vivo tests. Morphological analysis of the microspheres showed a spherical shape, a microporous surface and an average diameter of 66 ± 17µm (under dry conditions) and 123 ± 24 µm (under wet conditions). Chemical Imaging analysis pointed out a homogeneous distribution of gellan, gelatin and Insulin-like growth factor-1 within the microsphere matrix. In vitro cell culture tests showed that the microspheres promoted rat cardiac progenitor cells adhesion, and cluster formation. After dynamic suspension culture within an impeller-free bioreactor, cells still adhered to microspheres, spreading their cytoplasm over microsphere surface. Intramyocardial administration of microspheres in a cryoinjury rat model attenuated chamber dilatation, myocardial damage and fibrosis and improved cell homing.Overall, the findings of this study confirm that the produced microspheres display morphological, physicochemical, functional and biological properties potentially adequate for future applications as injectable scaffold for cardiac tissue engineering.

The purpose of this study was to figure out the dysregulation of miR-942-5p in melanoma and its role in melanoma pathogenesis.

Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) assay was used to determine the change of RNA expression. Protein expression was examined by Western blotting. miRNA target was validated through TargetScan and luciferase assay. Cell migration and invasion were detected by wound healing and transwell assay, respectively.

Results of qRT-PCR manifested miR-942-5p were upregulated in melanoma cell. High expression of miR-942-5p in melanoma patients presented a poor prognosis. Upregulation of miR-942-5p accelerated cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in melanoma cells. Cell apoptosis was inhibited by miR-942-5p mimics. Suppression of miR-942-5p by its inhibitor showed the opposite effects in melanoma cells. TargetScan and luciferase assay showed that miR-942-5p directly targeted to the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of DKK3. Overexpression of DKK3 inhibited GSK-3β phosphorylation and reduced the expression of β-catenin in both cytoplasm and nucleus, which were induced by miR-942-5p mimics leading to the activation of Wnt/β-catenin pathway.

In this study, we aimed to explore the potential role of PLGA-ZOL in protecting periodontitis and elucidate the underlying mechanism. A rat model of periodontitis was established by ligation the mandibular first molars, then PLGA-ZOL was implanted. The healing volume was scanned by cone-beam computed tomography. Cytokine levels in the gingival tissues were determined by ELISA and RT-PCR. Oxidative stress was indicated by detecting superoxide dismutase concentration and catalase activity. After periodontitis model was successfully established in rats, PLGA-ZOL treatment significantly attenuated alveolar bone loss, as indicated by the increased total healing volume, bone volume/tissue volume and osteoprotegerin level, as well as decreased sRANKL level. PLGA-ZOL treatment also suppressed the inflammatory activities by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokine production (TNF-α, IL-1β) but increasing anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion (IL-10).
