Metals pose health risks to marine organisms and have been associated with oxidative stress, which can lead to protein denaturation, DNA mutations, and cellular apoptosis. Sharks are important species ecologically, recreationally, and commercially. Because they occupy a high trophic level, assessing muscle tissue metal concentrations in sharks may reflect metal transfer in marine food webs. In this study, concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, selenium, silver, and zinc were measured in the muscle of Rhizoprionodon terraenovae (Atlantic sharpnose shark) from 12 sites along the coast of the southeastern United States. Activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase) also were examined in the muscle tissue of R. terraenovae. A total of 165 samples were analyzed, and differences in trace element bioaccumulation and enzyme activity were observed across sites. R. terraenovae samples collected from South Florida and South Carolina had the highest cumulative trace element concentrations whereas those collected from North Carolina and Alabama had the lowest cumulative concentrations. Trace element concentrations in shark muscle tissue were significantly correlated to antioxidant enzyme activity, particularly with glutathione peroxidase, suggesting that this enzyme may serve as a non-lethal, biomarker of metal exposure in R. terraenovae. Unfinished bulk GbE is used to make finished products that are sold as dietary supplements. The variable, complex composition of GbE makes it difficult to obtain consistent toxicological assessments of potential risk. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) observed hepatotoxicity in its rodent studies of a commercially available, unfinished GbE product, but the application of these results to the broader GbE supplement market is unclear. Here, we use a combination of non-targeted and targeted chromatographic and spectrophotometric methods to obtain profiles of 24 commercially available finished GbE products and unfinished standardized and unstandardized extracts with and without hydrolysis, then used principal component analysis to group unfinished products according to their similarity to each other and to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standard reference materials (SRM), and the finished products. Unfinished products were grouped into those that were characteristic and uncharacteristic of standardized GbE. Our work demonstrates that different analytical approaches produced similar classifications of characteristic and uncharacteristic products in unhydrolyzed samples, but the distinctions largely disappeared once the samples were hydrolyzed. Using our approach, the NTP GbE was most similar to two unfinished GbE products classified as characteristic, finished products, and the NIST GbE SRM. After applying 14C labelled methiozolin in two sediment (clay loam and sand)-water systems under aerobic conditions, its distribution, half-life, and metabolites within 300 days were investigated. The mass balance ranged within 92.0%-104.4% of applied radioactivity (AR). Radioactivity in the water declined sharply from 94.4% to 0.5% AR, while in the sediment it increased to 83.9% AR at 14 days before declining to 9.1% AR. The volatiles were minimal ( less then  0.5% AR), and the evolved labelled CO2 accounted for up to ~ 33.4% AR. From Radio-HPLC analysis, labelled methiozolin in water decreased from 108.9% to 0% AR, while a maximum of 15.1% AR remained in the sediment at the end. Eight metabolites were detected, all at minor levels and accounting for  less then  5.5% AR. The half-life of labelled methiozolin in the total sediment-water systems were 50.7 and 38.7 days for clay loam and sand, respectively.

Elliptical shape humeral head prostheses have been proposed to reflect a more anatomic shoulder replacement. Its effect on the rotational range of motion (ROM) compared to a standard spherical head is still not understood. The purpose was to investigate if there would be a difference in rotational ROM when comparing elliptical and spherical prosthetic heads in a dynamic shoulder model. The authors hypothesized that the use of elliptical heads would result in significantly more rotational ROM compared to the spherical head design.

Six fresh-frozen, cadaveric shoulders were evaluated using a dynamic shoulder model. After being tested in the native condition, each specimen underwent 6 conditions in the hemiarthroplasty state (1) matched-fit spherical head, (2) oversized spherical head, (3) undersized spherical head, (4) matched-fit elliptical head, (5) oversized elliptical head, and (6) undersized elliptical head. Current demographic changes indicate that more people will be care-dependent due to increasing life expectancy. Little is known about impact of preexisting dependency on stroke outcome after endovascular treatment (EVT).

We compared prospectively collected baseline and outcome data of previously dependent vs. independent stroke patients (prestroke modified Rankin Scale score of 3-5 vs. 0-2) treated with EVT. Outcome measures were favorable 3-month outcome (mRS ≤ 3 for previously dependent and mRS ≤ 2 for independent patients, respectively), death and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH).

Among 1247 patients, 84 (6.7%) were dependent before stroke. They were older (81 vs. 72years of age), more often female (61.9% vs. 46%), had a higher stroke severity at baseline (NIHSS 18 vs. 15 points), more often history of previous stroke (32.9% vs. 9.1%) and more vascular risk factors than independent patients. Favorable outcome and mortality were to the disadvantage of independent patients (26.2% vs. 44.4% and 46.4% vs. 25.5%, respectively), whereas sICH was comparable in both cohorts (4.9% vs. 5%). However, preexisting dependency was not associated with clinical outcome and mortality after adjusting for outcome predictors (OR 1.076, 95% CI 0.612-1.891; p = 0.799 and OR 1.267, 95% CI 0.758-2.119; p = 0.367, respectively).

Our study underscores the need for careful selection of care-dependent stroke patients when considering EVT, given a less favorable outcome observed in this cohort. Vascular risk factors (VRFs) may be associated with cognitive decline in early Parkinson's disease (PD) but results are inconclusive. The identification of modifiable risk factors is relevant for prevention and treatment.

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients of the PACOS cohort who underwent a baseline and follow-up neuropsychological evaluation were enrolled in the study. PD with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and dementia (PDD) were diagnosed according to the MDS criteria. A Baseline 1.5T brain MRI was used to calculate the white matter lesions (WMLs) burden using the Wahlund visual scale. Laboratory data, presence of hypertension, diabetes and use of anti-hypertensive drugs were collected and the Framingham Risk (FR) score was calculated. VRFs predicting PD-MCI and PDD were evaluated using Cox proportional hazard regression model.

Out of 139 enrolled patients, 84 (60.4%) were classified as normal cognition (NC) and 55 (39.6%) as MCI at baseline. At follow-up 28 (33.3%) PD-NC developed MCI and 4 (4.8%) PDD (follow-up time 23.5 ± 10.3months). Out of 55 PD-MCI patients at baseline, 14 (25.4%) converted to PDD. At multivariate analysis among PD-NC a systolic blood pressure (SBP) > 140mmHg was the stronger predictor of MCI (adjHR 4.04; 95% CI 1.41-11.3) while the presence of MCI at baseline (adj HR 7.55; 95% CI 1.76-32.3) and a severe WMLs burden (adj HR 2.80; 95% CI 0.86-9.04) were the strongest predictors of PDD, even if this latter association has a trend towards significance.

This study was aimed at evaluating the correlation and reproducibility of gingival thickness quantification using digital and direct clinical assessment methods.

Patients in need of tooth extraction were allocated into two groups according to the gingival thickness measurement method, either using an endodontic spreader (pre-extraction) or a spring caliper (post-extraction), both on the mid-facial (FGT) and mid-lingual (LGT). Pre-extraction Digital Imaging and COmmunications in Medicine (DICOM) and STereoLithography (STL) files of the arch of interest were obtained and merged for corresponding digital measurements. Inter-rater reliability between digital and direct assessment methods was analyzed using inter-class correlation coefficients (ICC).
