The large-group simulation proved to be a valid teaching and learning method for collaborating with other professionals and interacting with clients and the method can be considered as cost-effective compared with small-group simulations. The produced knowledge can be used in planning simulations in basic and in-service training.

To investigate how nurses perceive tasks and responsibilities in physical activity promotion of hospitalized older patients and which factors are of influence.

Mixed methods sequential explanatory design.

One hundred and eight nurses participated in a questionnaire survey and 51 nurses in a subsequent in-depth interview. Data were collected on tasks and responsibilities in physical activity promotion and their influencing factors as perceived by nurses. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and a deductive approach with directed content analysis was used for the data from the interviews.

Nurses perceived to have a dominant role in physical activity promotion of older patients during hospitalization. Ninety per cent of the nurses stated to be responsible for physical activity promotion and 32% stated to be satisfied with the actual level of physical activity of their patients. Nurses have specified to be responsible for signalling and performing physical activity promotion tasks and had final responsibility for transfers from bed to chair and promotion of daily activities. Influencing factors were low patient motivation, high workload causing priority shifts of tasks and the role of physicians.

To explore adult children's motivation in caregiving for their home-dwelling parents with dementia.

Qualitative design with a phenomenological approach.

Semi-structured individual interviews with 21 adult sons and daughters who were caregivers for a parent with dementia. Data were analysed using systematic text condensation.

Inspired by self-determination theory, three categories were identified in the empirical data representing the main motivational drivers for adult-child caregivers

(to the parent with dementia, the parent's spouse, other persons),

(in handling dementia, in the parent's need) and

(freedom of choice, innate values and tasks). Caregivers report relatedness as their key motivational driver. These results imply that nurses and other health professionals should value the importance of relatedness when interacting with dementia caregivers and establish belonging support structures. Further research should generate more knowledge of the positive motivational drivers, including interventions to improve relatedness, competence and autonomy.

To investigate the impact of intradialytic progressive resistance exercise (IPRE) on physical fitness and quality of life in maintenance haemodialysis (MHD) patients.

Subjects were allocated randomly to the exercise group received IPRE and the control group underwent a haemodialysis session alone. Outcomes measured were including physical fitness ascertained by 6-min walk test, sit-to-stand 10 test and handgrip strength. Kidney Disease Quality of Life Instrument was used to assess the quality of life, and also recorded the adverse event at each exercise session.

A total of 87 patients were analysed 43 in the exercise group and 44 in the control group. After 12weeks, there were significant improvements in physical fitness and past of the dimension of the scale in the exercise group.

IPRE can improve the physical fitness and quality of life in patients underwent MHD with no serious adverse events or safety issues.

This study aimed to investigate burnout, coping style and empathy among Chinese nurses working in medical and surgical wards and to examine the mediating effect of coping style between empathy and burnout among this group of nurses.

A cross-sectional questionnaire survey.

The study recruited a convenience sample of 363 nurses from three university-affiliated tertiary hospitals in Shiyan City, Hubei, China. A set of self-administered questionnaires was used to measure the variables of burnout, coping style and empathy. Structural equation modelling was performed using AMOS 20.0.

Nurse burnout was prevalent among Chinese nurses in medical and surgical wards, and coping style and empathy were significantly associated with burnout. Positive coping strategies and high levels of empathy could reduce burnout in nurses. Coping strategies were found to play a partial mediating role between empathy and burnout among this group of nurses.
