Global surgery is a rising field within academic surgery. With the publication of recent landmark papers highlighting the need for increased global efforts to combat surgical disease, many general surgery residents seek opportunities to gain clinical, research, and educational experience related to global surgery during residency. This study aims to quantify the global surgery opportunities that are publicly available to residents training in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited general surgery programs.
The websites of all ACGME-accredited general surgery residency programs were surveyed for mention of global surgery training opportunities. Each opportunity was recorded in a database and categorized based on type. Recorded categories include international clinical rotations, international surgical research opportunities, and formal tracks or training pathways for global surgery.
Of the 299 ACGME-accredited general surgery training programs, 52 (17%) mention some form ity on their website. Among these programs, 11 (21%) note both clinical and research opportunities, 28 (54%) mention only clinical opportunities, and 13 (25%) list only research opportunities. The large majority of global surgery opportunities were based in training programs at academic medical centers (n = 50, 96%). There was no significant difference in the percentage of global surgery programs when evaluated by program region (p = 0.154) CONCLUSIONS Few general surgery residency programs mention international training opportunities on their program websites. For those programs that do offer global surgery opportunities, these are typically international rotations offered as electives for upper-level residents. Expanding access to global surgery opportunities may be beneficial to meet the desires of residents wishing to pursue academic global surgery.
Crew Resource Management (CRM) training incorporates methods such as simulation, debrief, and teamwork training to emphasize human factors skills. This systematic review aimed to assess differences in CRM between UK and USA trauma personnel.
A structured search of the databases MEDLINE and Embase in addition to unstructured reference review and Google Scholar search was undertaken without time restraint to identify articles describing CRM training courses of trauma personnel. Predetermined criteria for inclusion included comprehensive reports of CRM training in trauma personnel with participant assessment. Articles were analyzed for course details and descriptions, Kirkpatrick domains and levels utilized, and measure items and outcomes.
Twenty-nine full-text articles (24 USA, 5 UK) met predetermined criteria. UK-based CRM had a heavy emphasis on doctors while USA-based CRM reached a range of multidisciplinary civilian and military professionals. UK-based CRM focused on skills outcomes using pre- and post-training questionnaires, whereas USA-based training focused on behavior and nontechnical skills utilizing validated standardized measures. CRM-based training, and particularly courses incorporating simulation and multidisciplinary methods, resulted in significantly improved preparedness for trauma, emergency skills, and clinical behavioral change.
CRM training has the potential to give significant benefits to participant learning, teamwork behaviors, and clinical care outcomes. The USA appears to utilize a focused multidisciplinary and human factors approach to trauma training, which could be adopted by UK institutions to improve cohesive team performance and patient care.

Downloadable audio files called podcasts have become popular within many areas of medical education. They can be a valuable supplement to traditional teaching methods. Medical educators may wish to incorporate podcasts into their curriculum and disseminate their work to a larger audience, but may not know how.
We aim to describe the implementation of a novel medical education podcast series for ophthalmology medical student and resident education, and demonstrate feasibility, sustainability, and acceptance of this learning platform.
The Basic and Clinical Science Course (BCSC) textbooks and supplementary texts, were used to create a weekly series of ophthalmology review podcasts. Feasibility markers include time and cost of production. Sustainability measures included download markers over time. Acceptance was measured by reviews on Apple iTunes and Twitter followers.
Forty-eight episodes were released from January 10, 2019 to March 31, 2020. Costs included $212.18 startup, and $29 monthly. The podcast has had 122,709 downloads to date (466/month January 2019, increased to 17,500/month February 2020). It obtained 331 Twitter followers, and 114 ratings on iTunes, with an average of 5.0 stars.
Medical education podcasts are a feasible way of disseminating educational materials to learners. We demonstrate sustainability and acceptance of this learning platform.
