Mechanoreceptors on the skin are heterogeneously distributed, and the sampling of neural signals in the brain can vary depending on the part of the body. Therefore, it can be challenging for the brain to consistently represent stimuli applied to different body sites. Here, we report an example of a regional perceptual distortion of the tactile space. We used a piezoelectric braille display to examine shape perception on the volar surface of the arm and to compare it to that on the palm. We found that the orientation of perceived stimuli on the arm was distorted in certain areas. In particular, an inwardly-inclined line shape was perceived as being more inwardly-inclined than it actually was. On the other hand, an outwardly-inclined line was perceived accurately. When the same stimuli were applied to the palm, this anisotropic bias was not observed. We also found that changing the posture of the arm changed the angle at which this anisotropic distortion occurred, suggesting the influence of the skin frame of reference on this illusion. This study showed a clear example of how the representation of even simple stimuli is complexly distinct when the stimuli are applied to different body sites.In retinoblastoma, accurate segmentation of ocular structure and tumor tissue is important when working towards personalized treatment. This retrospective study serves to evaluate the performance of multi-view convolutional neural networks (MV-CNNs) for automated eye and tumor segmentation on MRI in retinoblastoma patients. Forty retinoblastoma and 20 healthy-eyes from 30 patients were included in a train/test (N = 29 retinoblastoma-, 17 healthy-eyes) and independent validation (N = 11 retinoblastoma-, 3 healthy-eyes) set. Imaging was done using 3.0 T Fast Imaging Employing Steady-state Acquisition (FIESTA), T2-weighted and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted sequences. DNA Repair inhibitor Sclera, vitreous humour, lens, retinal detachment and tumor were manually delineated on FIESTA images to serve as a reference standard. Volumetric and spatial performance were assessed by calculating intra-class correlation (ICC) and dice similarity coefficient (DSC). Additionally, the effects of multi-scale, sequences and data augmentation were explored. Optimal performance was obtained by using a three-level pyramid MV-CNN with FIESTA, T2 and T1c sequences and data augmentation. Eye and tumor volumetric ICC were 0.997 and 0.996, respectively. Median [Interquartile range] DSC for eye, sclera, vitreous, lens, retinal detachment and tumor were 0.965 [0.950-0.975], 0.847 [0.782-0.893], 0.975 [0.930-0.986], 0.909 [0.847-0.951], 0.828 [0.458-0.962] and 0.914 [0.852-0.958], respectively. MV-CNN can be used to obtain accurate ocular structure and tumor segmentations in retinoblastoma.Observational studies have shown that several risk factors are associated with cardioembolic stroke. However, whether such associations reflect causality remains unknown. We aimed to determine whether established and provisional cardioembolic risk factors are causally associated with cardioembolic stroke. Genetic instruments for atrial fibrillation (AF), myocardial infarction (MI), electrocardiogram (ECG) indices and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP) were obtained from large genetic consortiums. Summarized data of ischemic stroke and its subtypes were extracted from the MEGASTROKE consortium. Causal estimates were calculated by applying inverse-variance weighted analysis, weighted median analysis, simple median analysis and Mendelian randomization (MR)-Egger regression. Genetically predicted AF was significantly associated with higher odds of ischemic stroke (odds ratio (OR) 1.20, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.16-1.24, P = 6.53 × 10-30) and cardioembolic stroke (OR 1.95, 95% CI 1.85-2.06, P = 8.81 × 10-125). Suggestive associations were found between genetically determined resting heart rate and higher odds of ischemic stroke (OR 1.01, 95% CI 1.00-1.02, P = 0.005), large-artery atherosclerotic stroke (OR 1.02, 95% CI 1.00-1.04, P = 0.026) and cardioembolic stroke (OR 1.02, 95% CI 1.00-1.04, P = 0.028). There was no causal association of P-wave terminal force in the precordial lead V1 (PTFVI), P-wave duration (PWD), NT-pro BNP or PR interval with ischemic stroke or any subtype.Species from the Culex coronator complex are Neotropical species and potential vectors of Saint Louis and West Nile viruses. Culex coronator was first described in Trinidad and Tobago in the early twentieth century and since then it has invaded and has been reported established in most countries of the Americas. Species from the Culex coronator complex were first detected in the United States in the state of Louisiana in 2004 and were subsequently detected in Florida in 2005, reaching Miami-Dade County in 2008. We hypothesize that species from the Cx. coronator complex are adapting to urban environments in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and are becoming more present and abundant in these areas. Therefore, our objective was to investigate the patterns of the presence and abundance of species from the Cx. coronator complex in the urban areas of Miami-Dade County. Here we used weekly data comprised of 32 CDC traps from 2012 to 2020 and 150 BG-Sentinel traps from 2016 to 2020. A total of 34,146 female mosquitoes from the Cx. coronator complex were collected, 26,138 by CDC traps and 8008 by BG-Sentinel traps. While the number of CDC traps that were positive was relatively constant at 26-30 positive traps per year, the number of positive BG-Sentinel traps varied substantially from 50 to 87 positive traps per year. Furthermore, the heat map and logistic general linear model for repeated measures analyses showed a significant increase in both the distribution and abundance of mosquitoes from the Cx. coronator complex, indicating that these species are becoming more common in anthropized habitats being able to thrive in highly urbanized areas. The increase in the distribution and abundance of species from the Cx. coronator complex is a major public health concern. The ability of species from the Cx. coronator complex to benefit from urbanization highlights the need to better understand the mechanisms of how invasive vector mosquito species are adapting and exploiting urban habitats.
