INTRODUCTION Nursing students establish therapeutic relationships with their patients and as future nursing professionals, they should be trained to be effective communicators. The objective of this systematic review was to know the impact of educational interventions on nursing students to develop their communication skills with patients. METHODS A systematic review of literature was carried out. The following databases were consulted CINAHL, PubMed (Ovid Medline), SCOPUS and Web of Science. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guided this review. As for inclusion criteria, published articles in English from 2000 to 2020 were included. The methodological rigor of the included articles was evaluated with the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Randomized Controlled Trial or Quasi-Experimental Studies. Changes in communication skills with the patient after the implementation of an intervention were analyzed. RESULTS Of the included studies in this systematic review (N = 19), two studies were randomized controlled trials, others were single group quasi-experimental studies (N = 11) and two group quasi-experimental studies (n = 6). The majority of the studies were carried out in the USA (n = 7). The most frequent educational intervention was simulation (n = 11). As for the improvement of communication skills, 13 of the 19 articles found statistically significant differences in patient-centered communication skills of nursing students. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review provides preliminary evidence of the effectiveness of interventions used to train nursing students in patient-centered communication. Although all the interventions obtained significant results in communication skills, it has not yet been determined which methodology is more effective.Previously, we have revealed that prolonged administration of a polyphenol-rich 0.1% extract from the berries of Aronia melanocarpa L. SAR439859 (chokeberries) alone and under chronic exposure to cadmium influences the body status of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu). The aim of this study was to evaluate, in an in vitro model, the chelating properties of the extract (0.05% and 0.1%) and its main polyphenolic ingredients (cyanidin 3-O-β-galactoside, chlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, quercetin, and kaempferol) regarding divalent ions of Zn (Zn2+) and Cu (Cu2+) at pH reflecting physiological conditions at the gastrointestinal tract such as 2 (empty stomach), 5.5 (full stomach), and 8 (duodenum). The study has revealed that the extract from Aronia berries, as well as cyanidin 3-O-β-galactoside and quercetin, can bind Zn2+ and Cu2+, but only at pH 5.5. Moreover, kaempferol was able to chelate Zn2+ at pH 5.5; however, this ability was weaker than those of cyanidin 3-O-β-galactoside and quercetin. The ability of the chokeberry extract to chelate Zn2+ and Cu2+ may be explained, at least partially, by the presence of polyphenols such as anthocyanin derivatives of cyanidin and quercetin. The findings seem to suggest that Aronia products, used as supplements of a diet, should be consumed before meals, and particular attention should be paid to adequate intake of Zn and Cu under prolonged consumption of these products to avoid deficiency of both bioelements in the body due to their complexation by chokeberry ingredients in the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract.Over the last few years, the application of nanotechnology to nutraceuticals has been rapidly growing due to its ability to enhance the bioavailability of the loaded active ingredients, resulting in improved therapeutic/nutraceutical outcomes. The focus of this work is nanoprebiotics and nanoprobiotics, terms which stand for the loading of a set of compounds (e.g., prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics) in nanoparticles that work as absorption enhancers in the gastrointestinal tract. In this manuscript, the main features of prebiotics and probiotics are highlighted, together with the discussion of emerging applications of nanotechnologies in their formulation. Current research strategies are also discussed, in particular the promising use of nanofibers for the delivery of probiotics. Synbiotic-based nanoparticles represent an innovative trend within this area of interest. As only few experimental studies on nanoprebiotics and nanoprobiotics are available in the scientific literature, research on this prominent field is needed, covering effectiveness, bioavailability, and safety aspects. There is unequivocal experimental, epidemiological and clinical evidence demonstrating a correlation between diet and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) [...].Flotillin-1 and flotillin-2 are ubiquitously expressed, membrane-associated proteins involved in multifarious cellular events from cell signaling, endocytosis, and protein trafficking to gene expression. They also contribute to oncogenic signaling. Flotillins bind the cytosolic leaflet of the plasma membrane and endomembranes and, upon hetero-oligomerization, serve as scaffolds facilitating the assembly of multiprotein complexes at the membrane-cytosol interface. Additional functions unique to flotillin-1 have been discovered recently. The membrane-binding of flotillins is regulated by S-palmitoylation and N-myristoylation, hydrophobic interactions involving specific regions of the polypeptide chain and, to some extent, also by their oligomerization. All these factors endow flotillins with an ability to associate with the sphingolipid/cholesterol-rich plasma membrane domains called rafts. In this review, we focus on the critical input of lipids to the regulation of the flotillin association with rafts and thereby to their functioning. In particular, we discuss how the recent developments in the field of protein S-palmitoylation have contributed to the understanding of flotillin1/2-mediated processes, including endocytosis, and of those dependent exclusively on flotillin-1. We also emphasize that flotillins affect directly or indirectly the cellular levels of lipids involved in diverse signaling cascades, including sphingosine-1-phosphate and PI(4,5)P2. The mutual relations between flotillins and distinct lipids are key to the regulation of their involvement in numerous cellular processes.
