The oral form of emedastine is used for the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR). However, data characterizing emedastine transfer across the placenta and excretion into breast milk are limited. In this case report, we assessed emedastine concentrations in maternal and neonatal blood, cord blood, and breast milk. Materials and Methods After the patient provided informed consent, emedastine concentrations in maternal serum, breast milk, cord blood, and neonatal serum were measured while the mother was taking oral emedastine 2 mg once daily. Case Report A 39-year-old woman with AR received emedastine during pregnancy and lactation. Her female infant was born at 37 weeks of gestation with a birth weight of 2,820 g. Emedastine concentrations in maternal serum at 11.5 and 19.0 hours after maternal dosing were 0.39 and 0.22 ng/mL, respectively. The emedastine concentration in cord blood (19.6 hours after maternal dosing) was 0.18 ng/mL. At 24 hours after delivery (44 hours after maternal dosing), emedastine was under the lower limit of quantification ( less then 0.05 ng/mL) in the infant's serum. Emedastine concentrations in breast milk ranged from 0.06 to 0.44 ng/mL. Calculated infant doses through breast milk were much lower than the clinical dose of emedastine. The infant had normal developmental progress and no detectable drug-related adverse effects. Conclusions Rates of emedastine transfer into placenta and breast milk were low. Deoiled palm kernel cake (DOPC), a byproduct from palm-oil mills was investigated in the present study for its cadmium remediating capacity. DOPC was immobilized using sodium alginate polymer and biosorption studies were carried out using DOPC as adsorbent for removal of cadmium. Research revealed biosorption potential of DOPC and the optimum conditions for maximum biosorption of cadmium have been identified as 120 min of contact time, 150 rpm of agitation speed, pH 6 and 15 mg/L of initial cadmium concentration. An algorithm(s) that finds the malignant potential of a nodule preoperatively, to overcome unnecessary diagnostic methods, does not exist. The objective of the study was to correlate thyroid nodule sizes measured by ultrasonography and risk of malignancy assessed by cytologic and histologic examinations. Data regarding fine-needle aspiration cytology and the results of histologic examinations of surgical specimens of 260 nodules were collected and analyzed. The macro or multiple calcifications, the complex echo pattern, and posterior region homogeneity were considered suspicious in ultrasonography. Bethesda system for classification of thyroid nodules was used for cytopathology. Histopathology performed as per the 2004 World Health Organization classification system. The benefit score analysis was performed for determination of clinical usefulness. Twenty-eight of 49 malignant nodules and 46 of 68 malignant nodules detected through ultrasound following fine-needle aspiration cytopathology and histopathology were less then 2 cm in size. A correlation was found for malignancy rate detected by ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology and those of the surgical specimen (r = 0.945, P = .015, R2 = 0.894). Ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology had 0.994 sensitivities, 0.721 accuracies, and 0.08 to 0.945 diagnostic confidence for the detection of malignant nodules. Nodule size less than 2 mm (P = .011) was associated with the malignancy potential of thyroid nodules. Ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology had 19 (7%) results as a false negative and 1 (1%) results were false positive. The prognosis of brain metastatic colorectal cancer patients (BMCRC) is poor. Several local treatments have been used, but the optimal treatment choice remains an unresolved issue. We evaluated the clinical outcomes of a large series of BMCRC patients treated in several Italian centers using stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).
