We classified the CpG sites into nine groups according to the changes in the three trimesters and found that 38.37% of CpG sites had DNA methylation changes during pregnancy, especially between the first and second trimesters.

DNA methylation pattern changes between trimesters, indicating possible involvement in maternal adaptation to pregnancy. Meanwhile, DNA methylation patterns during pregnancy and in the postpartum period were different, implying that puerperium repair may also function through DNA methylation mechanisms.

The potential beneficial effect of individual antioxidants on mortality has been reported. However, the association of overall intakes of dietary antioxidants with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among adults with diabetes remained unclear.

A total of 4,699 US adults with diabetes were enrolled in 2003-2014 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and followed for mortality until 31 December 2015. The Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score (DAQS) and the Dietary Antioxidant Index (DAI), which indicate the total antioxidant properties, were calculated based on the intakes of vitamins A, C, E, zinc, selenium, and magnesium. The Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to investigate the associations of the DAQS or the DAI with all-cause and cause-specific mortality.

A total of 913 deaths occurred during 27,735 person-years of follow-up, including 215 deaths due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and 173 deaths due to cancer. The higher intakes of antioxidant vitamins A, E, magnesium, and selenium were associated with lower all-cause mortality. The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) (95% CIs) comparing the highest DAQS (5-6) to the lowest DAQS (0-2) were 0.70 (0.53-0.92) for all-cause mortality, 0.56 (0.35-0.90) for CVD mortality, and 0.59 (0.33-1.04) for cancer mortality. Consistent inverse associations were found between the DAI and mortality.

Higher intake of overall dietary antioxidants was associated with lower risk of death from all-cause and CVD in adults with diabetes. Future dietary intervention studies are needed to determine whether increasing overall antioxidant micronutrients intake could prevent premature death among adults with diabetes.

The problem has received significant research attention, but an ongoing public benchmark on non-biased (i.e., not scraped from web) data to develop open and reproducible algorithms has been missing. selleck compound Here, we report on the setup of such a benchmark using publicly available food images sourced through the mobile MyFoodRepo app used in research cohorts. Through four rounds, the benchmark released the MyFoodRepo-273 dataset constituting 24,119 images and a total of 39,325 segmented polygons categorized in 273 different classes. Models were evaluated on private tests sets from the same platform with 5,000 images and 7,865 annotations in the final round. Top-performing models on the 273 food categories reached a mean average precision of 0.568 (round 4) and a mean average recall of 0.885 (round 3), and were deployed in production use of the MyFoodRepo app. We present experimental validation of round 4 results, and discuss implications of the benchmark setup designed to increase the size and diversity of the dataset for future rounds.

Vitamin D deficiency is a common condition in critically ill patients. A high dose of vitamin D3 can rapidly restore vitamin D levels. The aim of this meta-analysis was to synthesize the results from up-to-date randomized control trials (RCT) and validate the effect of vitamin D3 in critically ill patients.

Several databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central database, were searched up to December 4th, 2020. All RCTs that investigated the use of a high dose of vitamin D3 in critically ill patients and reported mortality data were included in the meta-analysis. The primary outcome was the mortality truncated to day 28 and day 90.

A total of 10 RCTs enrolling 2058 patients were finally included. The use of a high dose of vitamin D3 in critically ill patients could not decrease the mortality truncated to day 28 (RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.78-1.11,

= 0.43) or day 90 (RR 0.91, 95% CI 0.79-1.05,

= 0.21). A high dose of vitamin D3 could significantly reduce the ventilator days (MD -9.38, 95%CI -13.44 to -5.31,

< 0.001), but there were no statistic difference in length of ICU stay (MD -2.76, 95% CI -6.27 to 0.74,

= 0.12) and hospital stay (MD -2.42, 95% CI -6.21 to 1.36,

= 0.21). No significant difference was observed in adverse events between the vitamin D3 group and the placebo group.

The use of high dose vitamin D3 was not associated with decreased mortality in critically ill patients, but could significantly reduce the ventilator days.

However, the interventional effects of GT and OLT on hypertension induced by a high-salt diet and its mechanism have not been fully explored. This study evaluated the anti-hypertensive effects of GT and OLT and their underlying mechanisms. The in vivo anti-hypertensive effects of GT and OLT and their capability to prevent hypertension and regulate the intestinal microbiota in Wistar rats fed with a high-salt diet were evaluated. Our results show that GT and OLT supplementations could regulate oxidative stress, inflammation, gene expression, and parameter levels related to blood pressure (BP) and prevent the increase in BP induced by a high-salt diet. Furthermore, both GT and OLT boosted the richness and diversity of intestinal microbiota, increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria and reduced the abundance of harmful bacteria and conditionally pathogenic bacteria, and regulated the intestinal microbial metabolism pathway related to BP. Among them, OLT presented better effects than GT. These findings indicate that GT and OLT can prevent hypertension caused by high-salt diets, which may be due to the regulation of intestinal flora by GT and OLT.The identification and validation of biomarkers of food intake (BFIs) is a promising approach to develop more objective and complementary tools to the traditional dietary assessment methods. Concerning dairy, their evaluation in terms of intake is not simple, given the variety of existing foods, making it difficult to establish the association between specific dairy products consumption and the effects on human health, which is also dependent on the study population. Here, we aimed at identifying BFI of both milk (M) and yogurt (Y) in 14 healthy young (20-35 years) and 14 older (65-80 years). After a 3-week run-in period of dairy exclusion from the diet, the subjects acutely consumed 600 ml of M or Y. Metabolomics analyses were conducted on serum samples during the following 6 h (LC-MS and GC-MS). Several metabolites showing increased iAUC after milk or yogurt intake were considered as potential BFI, including lactose (M > Y, 2-fold), galactitol (M > Y, 1.5-fold), galactonate (M > Y, 1.2-fold), sphingosine-1-specificities (e.g., aging) should also be considered in future studies to obtain more accurate and specific BFI.Upper tract urothelial carcinoma presents 5% of urothelial cancers. The most frequent revealing symptom gross haematuria. Vaginal metastasis is rare revealing condition. The combination on these two symptoms should recall the diagnosis of this neoplasm. Biopsy of the vaginal mass can make the histologic diagnosis easily.Ectopic pheochromocytomas, also called paragangliomas, are defined as catecholamine -secreting tumors, which develop outside the adrenal medulla. Pheochromocytomas of the urinary tract represent less than 1% of all paragangliomas and are most commonly located in the bladder. Nevertheless, prostatic pheochromocytoma is an extremely rare clinical entity and only a few cases have been reported in the medical literature. Herein, we report a case of ectopic pheochromocytoma arising from the prostate, revealing with hypertensive crisis occurring immediately after ejaculation. The occurrence of urothelial carcinoma and tuberculosis in the same kidney is exceptional. To our knowledge, a few cases have been reported in the literature. Herein, we report a case of an unusual association between renal tuberculosis and urothelial carcinoma of the upper urinary tract in a 61-year-old patient and discuss the diagnosis and treatment difficulties.Small renal masses (SRM) represent a heterogenous group of kidney lesions that are often found incidentally and can represent a diagnostic dilemma. Herein, we report a 55 year old female who presented with a 25mm right renal mass. She had no symptomology or significant medical history but did report undergoing a traumatic splenectomy 30 years prior. Using Tc-99 m heat damaged RBC scintigraphy, the renal mass was confirmed as focal splenosis. Right sided renal splenosis is almost unheard of. Our case illustrates how good clinical history and correct imaging can prevent unnecessary investigations and surgery for a rare differential of SRMs.Segmental testicular infarction(STI) is a rare unknown condition. Clinical presentation is non-specific and management is unconsensual. We report clinical and surgical management of a segmental testicular infarction. A 18-years old adult presented to emergency with acute right testicular pain. The only triggering factor was a stressful situation. Examination revealed a slightly swollen, non-ascending testicle with no inflammatory signs. We suspected spermatic -cord torsion(SCT), we decided to explore it surgically. Exploration showed a well-demarcated infarcted inferior pole of right testicle. Partial orchiectomy was performed. STI is a rare entity often clinically confused with SCT. Diagnosis is based on intraoperative findings.Urachus is a tubular structure connecting the allatois to the bladder's apex, in the embryonic development. We report a rare case of a 5-year-old boy, with no past medical history, complaining of secondary enuresis, pollakiuria and urgent incontinence. Physical exam revealed a hypogastric mass. Echo guided percutaneous biopsy followed by a histological analysis showed embryonal RMS. The remainder of the staging ruled out metastasis. The patient received neoadjuvant chemotherapy before proceeding to complete tumor excision. Surgical exploration revealed that the tumor was primitively related to the urachus. Total resection was performed. The one year follow-up was uneventful.
