Background Compared with the current gold standard of knee endoprosthetics, the concept of kinematic alignment is more responsive to the individual anatomy of the patient as it enables the three-dimensional restoration of individual axes, joint lines and capsule tension. One point of criticism is the lack of intraoperative control over individual bone resections with conventional instrumentation. However, with the help of CT-based individual 3D-printed cutting blocks, a precise preoperative plan can be transferred to the operating room. The aim of this article is to explain the operative technique of patient-specific instrumentation (PSI)-protected kinematic alignment. Methods The procedure is based on a preoperative 3D model of the bony anatomy of the patient, with the aid of which the planning of the operation, with the positioning and size of the implant, as well as the necessary bone resections, are carried out. With this information about anatomy and resection levels the individual cutting blocks are produced, aided by a 3D printer. Intraoperative control is achieved by measuring the resection by means of a gage and comparison with the digital 3D design. Discussion With the aid of the 3D-printed PSI cutting blocks the preoperative plan of kinematic alignment can be implemented in a precise manner. It is a simple tool and does not require any great expense. Compared with the conventional instrumentation, the operating time is shortened. This review provides a critical analysis of the historical, epidemiological aspects and the estimated economic impacts associated with SA-MCF in Brazil. Moreover, the clinical manifestations and pathological lesions associated with SA-MCF in cattle are reviewed and discussed and the phylogenetic distribution of OvHV-2 in Brazil is presented. OvHV-2 is the only MCF virus identified in animals from Brazil. It is recommended that a histopathologic diagnosis of SA-MCF be based on all aspects of vascular disease in the affected animal and not only lymphocytic/necrotizing vasculitis and/or fibrinoid change. Here, the molecular characterization of aureocin 4181, a bacteriocin produced by Staphylococcus aureus 4181, a strain involved in bovine mastitis, is presented. Aureocin 4181 gene cluster (aurRID1CBAT) was mined from scaffold 15 of the draft genome of its producer strain. Three (AurABC) out of the four structural peptides of aureocin 4181 are identical to those of aureocin A70, except for AurD1 of aureocin 4181, which showed a conservative substitution of Leu29 to Phe29 when compared to AurD of aureocin A70. According to molecular mass determination and peptide sequencing, combined with genome sequencing data, aureocin 4181 is an N-formylated variant of aureocin A70. The analysis of its antimicrobial spectrum was extended to include strains of the two major contagious pathogens involved in bovine mastitis, S. aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae. Aureocin 4181 exhibited a striking activity against S. aureus, inhibiting most strains tested. Besides having a broader spectrum of activity, aureocin 4181 exhibited a stronger bacteriolytic action against the target strains and proved to be from two- to fourfold more active than aureocin A70 against S. aureus. Aureocin 4181 has potential to become an alternative drug for prevention and control of mastitic staphylococci, a pathogen that imposes a huge economic burden to dairy industry worldwide. While an isolated population can exhibit only bistability and essential extinction, a spatially structured population can exhibit numerous coexisting attractors. We identify mechanisms and parameter ranges that can protect the spatially structured population from essential extinction, whereas it is inevitable in the local system. In the case of weak coupling, a state where one subpopulation density lies above and the other one below the Allee threshold can prevent essential extinction. Strong coupling, on the other hand, enables both populations to persist above the Allee threshold when dynamics are (approximately) out of phase. In both cases, attractors have fractal basin boundaries. Outside of these parameter ranges, dispersal was not found to prevent essential extinction. Case presentation A 24-year-old male was admitted to the emergency department after suffering a stab wound in the anterolateral aspect of his left upper thigh. Entry wound measures approximately 3 cm × 0.7 cm; no exit wound was observed. On examination of the injured limb, the thigh was swollen and painful. Skin color was mildly pale and skin temperature was slightly diminished in his leg; leg numbness was also pointed out by the patient. Common femoral artery pulse was normal, while distal pulses were diminished. Point-of-care Doppler ultrasound (DUS) showed a subfascial hematoma in the thigh, which filled on color Doppler, corresponding to a pseudoaneurysm.
