Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for more than 90% of the oral carcinomas and has a high fatality rate. This study aimed to identify potentially diagnostic biomarkers of OSCC through integrated analysis of DNA methylation and gene expression profiles.

The DNA methylation profiles of OSCC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were analyzed to screen patients with CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) and investigate the relationship between CIMP and survival probability of OSCC patients. Differential methylation and expression analyses of the paired OSCC tumor and paracancerous samples from TCGA were performed. Logistic regression model was established, and the accuracy of this diagnostic model for OSCC was evaluated in validation sets from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO).

OSCC patients with CIMP had lower survival probability than those without CIMP. The cg02860732 and cg04342955 were determined as candidate diagnostic methylation sites for OSCC. Logistic regression model was established based on cg02860732 and cg04342955 showed relatively high diagnostic accuracy in OSCC.

The functional residual capacity (FRC) determines the oxygenating capacity of the lung and is heavily affected in the clinical context of the acute respiratory distress syndrome. Nitrogen-wash-in/wash-out methods have been used to measure FRC. These methods have rarely been validated against exactly known volumes. washout/washin method in measuring FRC, by comparing it with set volumes in a lung simulator.

We conducted adiagnostic bench study in the Intensive Care Unit and Radiology Department of a tertiary hospital in Switzerland. Patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and health state utility values are critical inputs in the clinical and economic evaluation of treatments for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, information on health state utility values is lacking in the context of Ethiopia. Here, we aimed to assess HRQoL and determine health state utility values and factors that influence the values among HIV/AIDS patients in Ethiopia.

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 511 HIV/AIDS patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Ethiopia. Patients aged 18years or older were eligible for the interview and those who were mentally unstable and with hearing impairment were excluded from the study. We performed face-to-face interviews using EuroQol-5 Dimensions-5 Levels (EQ-5D-5L) in combination with EuroQol-Visual Analog Scales (EQ-VAS). Level-specific disutility coefficients obtained from the general population were used for computing utility values. Patients' depression and pain/ discomfort dimensions were identified to have critical influence in reducing the HRQoL of adult HIV/AIDS patients in the context of Ethiopia. The study is also the first to use the EQ-5D-5L tool to identify health state utility values for Ethiopian adult HIV/AIDS patients. Future economic evaluations of HIV/AIDS interventions are encouraged to employ the identified utility values.

LLINs are susceptible to forming holes within a short time in use, compromising their ability to provide long-term physical protection against insect-borne vectors of disease. Mechanical damage is known to be responsible for the majority of holes, with most being the result of snagging, tearing, hole enlargement, abrasion and seam failure, which can readily occur during normal household use. To enable an assessment of the ability of LLINs to resist such damage prior to distribution, a new suite of testing methods was developed to reflect the main damage mechanisms encountered during normal use of LLINs.

Four existing BS ENandISO standards used by the textile industry were adapted to determine the ability of LLINs to resist the most common mechanisms of real-world damage experienced in the field. The new suite comprised tests for snag strength (BS 15,5982008), bursting strength (ISO 13938-21999), hole enlargement resistance (BS 3423-381998), abrasion resistance (ISO 12947-11998) and new guidance around the seam construction of LLINs.
