Background The objective of this study was to explore the association between fresh fruit consumption and long-term risk of upper gastrointestinal cancer (UGI) in the Linxian Dysplasia Nutrition Intervention Trial (NIT) cohort. Methods A cohort of 3318 subjects with esophageal squamous dysplasia participated in the Linxian Dysplasia NIT in May 1985 and were followed up until 30 September 2015. Demographic characteristics, lifestyle, and history of diseases were collected at the baseline. The primary endpoint was death from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), gastric cardia carcinoma (GCC), and gastric noncardia carcinoma (GNCC). Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using the Cox proportional hazard model. Results In the 30-year follow-up, a total of 541 ESCC, 284 GCC, and 77 GNCC deaths occurred. Relative to those who never or rarely consumed fresh fruit, the risk of ESCC mortality in participants who consumed fresh fruit more than 12 times/year were significantly decreased by 37.3% (HR = 0.63, 95% CI 0.49-0.81). In the subgroup analyses, significantly protective effects on ESCC mortality were observed especially in females (HR = 0.59, 95% CI 0.40-0.89), non-smokers (HR = 0.67, 95% CI 0.48-0.94), and nondrinkers (HR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.51-0.93). Conclusions Consuming fresh fruit more than 12 times/year may reduce the long-term risk of ESCC mortality in this dysplasia population, particularly in females, non-smokers, and nondrinkers. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) such as miRNA-146a are known to be upregulated in OSCC. However, it is unclear whether they are involved in driving EMT. Here, we investigated the effect of miR-146a overexpression on proliferation, migration, and EMT in OSCC cells. OSCC cells were transfected with a plasmid expressing miR-146a precursor. Cell lines that stably overexpressed miRNA-146a were assessed for proliferation, colony formation, and invasiveness in vitro. Expression of markers and regulators of EMT, cell motility, and invasion were measured by qRT-PCR and western blot. Overexpression of miR-146a promotes EMT phenotypes and may drive tumorigenesis and progression in OSCC, making it a useful target for future OSCC treatments.To reveal transition dynamics of global neuronal networks of math-gifted adolescents in handling long-chain reasoning, this study explores momentary phase-synchronized patterns, that is, electroencephalogram (EEG) synchrostates, of intracerebral sources sustained in successive 50 ms time windows during a reasoning task and non-task idle process. Through agglomerative hierarchical clustering for functional connectivity graphs and nested iterative cosine similarity tests, this study identifies seven general and one reasoning-specific prototypical functional connectivity patterns from all synchrostates. Markov modeling is performed for the time-sequential synchrostates of each trial to characterize the interstate transitions. The analysis reveals that default mode network, central executive network (CEN), dorsal attention network, cingulo-opercular network, left/right ventral frontoparietal network, and ventral visual network aperiodically recur over non-task or reasoning process, exhibiting high predictability in interactively reachable transitions. Compared to non-gifted subjects, math-gifted adolescents show higher fractional occupancy and mean duration in CEN and reasoning-triggered transient right frontotemporal network (rFTN) in the time course of the reasoning process. Statistical modeling of Markov chains reveals that there are more self-loops in CEN and rFTN of the math-gifted brain, suggesting robust state durability in temporally maintaining the topological structures.
