Although median urinary iodine was in the iodine-sufficient range, a rising proportion of women had low urinary excretion. In the studies involving schoolchildren, excessive iodine excretion was also observed. The major strength of this review is the combination of data from different publications to give an overall baseline of thyroid epidemiology in Bulgaria. Further work is needed to map the recent trends regarding thyroid pathology in Bulgaria and the complete epidemiological dataset.Genome packaging is a fundamental process in a viral life cycle and a prime target of antiviral drugs. Herpesviruses use an ATP-driven packaging motor/terminase complex to translocate and cleave concatemeric dsDNA into procapsids but its molecular architecture and mechanism are unknown. We report atomic structures of a herpesvirus hexameric terminase complex in both the apo and ADP•BeF3-bound states. Each subunit of the hexameric ring comprises three components-the ATPase/terminase pUL15 and two regulator/fixer proteins, pUL28 and pUL33-unlike bacteriophage terminases. Distal to the nuclease domains, six ATPase domains form a central channel with conserved basic-patches conducive to DNA binding and trans-acting arginine fingers are essential to ATP hydrolysis and sequential DNA translocation. Rearrangement of the nuclease domains mediated by regulatory domains converts DNA translocation mode to cleavage mode. Our structures favor a sequential revolution model for DNA translocation and suggest mechanisms for concerted domain rearrangements leading to DNA cleavage.RNA helicases are known from their ability to bind and unwind double-stranded RNA initiating RNA processing events. These evolutionary conserved RNA binding proteins are broadly expressed in a variety of tissues; however, we can distinguish those, which represent tissue-specific expression pattern and play unique roles in certain cell lineages. For instance, some RNA helicases mediate transcriptomic changes triggering cell differentiation which results in specification and establishment of germline in a developing embryo. Others act as safeguards responsible for maintenance of DNA integrity in germ cell. In this article, we focus on selected DEAD/DEAH-box RNA helicases involved in germline development and spermatogenesis presenting their diverse functions and implications for male fertility.Chronic kidney disease is associated with altered lipid metabolism and lipid accumulation. Selleck Tanespimycin Although it is though that hyperlipemia is a consequence of kidney dysfunction, several lines of evidence support that hyperlipidemia may contribute to the onset and progression of kidney disease, also in diabetes. This review describes the results of recent observational studies supporting the concept that glucose is only partly responsible for kidney damage onset, while a cluster of factors, including hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-cholesterol, could play a relevant role in inducing onset and progression of DKD. We also report the results of randomized clinical trials investigating in type 2 diabetic patients the role of drug improvement of hypertriglyceridemia on renal outcomes. Finally, we discuss putative mechanisms linking hyperlipidemia (i.e. hypertriglyceridemia or low HDL cholesterol) with kidney disease.Urine samples can be readily obtained from patients in everyday clinical practice. Therefore, the availability of urine allows physicians to obtain relevant clinical information in a timely manner. Since the measurement of urinary protein levels is essential in diagnosing and treating a host of diseases, the potential detection of urinary proteins by urinary strips in an easy, quick, and cheap way is very attractive. However, to ensure optimal use of urinary strips, one needs to be aware of their characteristics and their limitations. In this review, we discuss the characteristics of the urinary strips available for testing urinary protein levels and for detecting urinary albumin. Selleck Tanespimycin We then consider their analytical performances in their most widely used clinical applications (e.g., in pregnancy, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and screening of the general population). As the pollution of fine particulate matter (≤ 2.5 μg/m3 in aerodynamic diameter; PM2.5) and ozone (O3) is becoming more and more serious in developing countries, we, hereby, investigated the effects of PM2.5, constituents of PM2.5 and O3 on the lung function of children in Tianjin, China. The lung functions of 198 pupils from nine primary schools in Tianjin were examined (repeated five times) during the months of October to December in 2016, 2017 and 2018, respectively. And the mixed-effect models were used to evaluate the effects of air pollutants. A 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and O3-8h might lead to reductions of forced vital capacity (FVC) in 1.03% (- 1.87 to - 0.19%) and 21.09% (- 25.54 to - 16.58%), respectively, while a 10 ng/m3 increment in ANY might account for the 166.44% (- 221.32 to - 112.31%) decreases in FVC. PM2.5 and O3-8h might be more harmful to the lung functions of female students and participants with PS exposure at home. And the main sources of pollution resulting in the decrease in pulmonary function might be traffic pollution and coal combustion.Cd and Pb are common toxic contaminants prevailing in agricultural soils contaminated by mining activities. In this study, biochar was used to stabilize Cd and Pb contaminated soil for safe with three crops rotation condition within one year. Field experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of Litchi branch biochar (BC), pyrolyzed at 600 °C and applied at 4 rates [(0 t ha-1 (T0), 10 t ha-1 (T1), 20 t ha-1 (T2) and 30 t ha-1 (T3)]) on remediation of Cd and Pb in agricultural soil near Dabaoshan Mine in South China under a cucumber-sweet potato-rape rotation. The results showed that the application of BC can significantly increase the pH, cation exchange capacity and soil organic matter. After cultivation of crops, the pH values decrease gradually, with the biggest drop of 0.45 pH units in T3 treatment after rape cultivation. BC application increased the yield of three crops up to onefold to twofold in T3 treatment as compared to the control. The uptake of Cd and Pb in all three crops decreases with the increase in BC doses, which is mainly related to the decrease in bioavailable metals in their respective soil treatments.
