Door handles are not only important for their aesthetic value to your home but they're also essential for security as they allow you to lock and unlock your door. Over time, the door handle may start to lose its grip or feel a bit loose. It may also begin to look aged and worn. This is a sign that it's probably time to replace it.

One of the first indications that your door handle needs replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a problem since it means that you are unable to no longer lock or unlock your door, which could create the risk of security for you and your family.

It's also an excellent idea to replace the handle on your door if it is damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be very dangerous, especially in the event that your children or senior family members are unable to open it, and get trapped within. It's a good thing that it's simple to fix a damaged door handle by replacing the handle that was broken.

The majority of modern door handles are standard size and so they should fit any door. If you're not sure whether the new door handle you're buying will fit, try removing the old one and determining the holes in its housing. This will help you to buy the right door handle.

It is the easiest method to take off the old door handle by removing it from the door. This is usually done using a screw driver. Some door handles come with the cover plate, which conceals the screws used to mount them. You'll need to remove it to get to the screws. After you have removed the old handle, make a note of the way the spindle is connected. This will help you align the new handle.

You can also remove the door handle by unscrewing the latch mechanism. This is usually done with the screwdriver, but you'll need to locate the small latch, which should be at the edge of the trim piece. Once you've removed the latch, you'll need to take the handle off the strike plate and then remove the latch from the door edge.

Remove the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace your latch plate when replacing the handle. This is the plate that holds the hole where the latch of the door hooks when the door closes. The new handles will have two latch plates: a rectangular and circular plate (see the above diagram that shows the parts of the door handle). If your current latch plate has rectangular, swap it out for the round one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle more comfortable to use.

The first step is to loosen the screw that's holding the latch plate in place. The screws are often quite tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. It might be beneficial to have a second person assist with this part if possible.

The latch plate should easily be removed from the door once the screws have been removed. If it's stuck or won't move, use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Attach the latch plate to the door jamb using the screws that came with your new handles. Do not tighten the screws too much because this could damage the strike plate.

If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in its proper position, shut and then open the door to check if it latches and closes correctly. If not you'll need to adjust the strike plate up or down, or even forward or back until the door closes and latches properly.

If the door is still moving or jiggles, then you may need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent with older doors, but could be due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are not deep enough or not the right size for the latch, or due to damaged or broken strike plate. If this is the case, follow the exact procedure as adjusting the strike plate, using the use of a metal file instead the hammer and chisel.

Remove the Latch

The latch is a bent metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward, allowing you to open the door. upvc door handles connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep the door closed. If your door wobbles when you close, a new latch may be all you need to correct the issue.

The screws that hold the door latch are hard to spot however, you can use a screwdriver to make a small hole in the trim plate and pry the latch off. After you've removed the trim plate, it will be simple to take off the latch as well as the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in place.

If the latch doesn't easily come out you can try using a paper clip or a tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the handle and latch begin to break off. You may have to do this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to let it out.

After the old latch is removed and the old latch is removed, you should be able to insert the new latch into the slot without issues. Use the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is correctly placed in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Before installing the new handle, be certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle is in line with the measurement.

If you're replacing the latch or handle, or if your old lock cylinder is damaged, then you will need an entirely new one. If you're not switching locks, a new lock should fit inside your existing recess, and work with the keys you have already. Make sure you select a latch with a rectangular cover plate that match your old handles.

Some doors don't have this gap. If it doesn't have a handle, you'll need to drill a hole into the door to install the new handle. The procedure to do this is similar to the procedure for opening a door with a lock, but you'll need to take extra care not to harm the door or frame.
