Due to the nationwide lockdown to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and subsequent alcohol ban in South Africa, several cases of toxic alcohol ingestion presented to our emergency unit. Many of these patients admitted to making home brews of alcohol while others simply use industrial toxic alcohols. The diagnosis of these poisonings is challenging as direct assays are not available in our setting.
We present a case of presumed ethylene glycol poisoning that presented with persistent seizures and a high anion gap metabolic acidosis (HAGMA).
A high index of suspicion for toxic alcohol poisoning should be maintained in patients presenting with an altered mental status, seizures and a HAGMA. Indirect markers such as clinical features and laboratory results can lead to the diagnosis when direct assays are unavailable.

Paradoxically, LA size in athletes may overlap the enlargement observed in patients with cardiac pathology. Current knowledge is mainly derived from studies of athletes, and little is known about cardiac adaptations to physical activity (PA) in the general population. We explored the association between objectively measured PA and LA volume index (LAVi), and between LAVi enlargement and indices of diastolic dysfunction stratified by PA-level. Our study included 1573 participants from the population-based Tromsø Study (2015-16). PA was assessed with an ActiGraph wGT3X-BT accelerometer. Echocardiography was performed according to current guidelines. The associations between PA and LAVi, and between LAVi enlargement and indices of diastolic dysfunction were estimated by univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses, adjusted for sex, age, and cardiovascular risk factors. Our multiple adjusted analyses showed significant linear associations between PA and LAVi in ages less then 70 years, and between PA and LAVi in participants with normal diastolic function. No associations were seen in ages ≥ 70 years or for participants with abnormal diastolic function. In those 40-54 years, the most active participants had larger LAVi (4.45 mL/m2, p = 0.016) than the least active. LAVi enlargement was only associated with indices of diastolic dysfunction in the most inactive participants. In conclusion, higher levels of PA associate with greater LAVi in participants less then 70 years with normal diastolic function. LAVi enlargement is only associated with diastolic dysfunction in the most inactive participants.The objective of this review was to synthesize existing evidence on mobile health (mHealth) interventions geared at improving HPV related knowledge, HPV vaccination intent and HPV vaccination uptake. Between November and December 2019, systematic searches were performed in the databases PubMed, Ebsco/CINAHL, Ebsco/PsycINFO, and Clarivate Analytics/Web of Science Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). We identified 805 articles of which 92 were eligible for inclusion after abstract screening. 19 articles met the inclusion criteria of the review based on full article review and all but one of the included interventions were conducted in the United States. mHealth interventions ranged from text messages, phone calls to interactive voice recordings and software on tablets. All four interventions which attempted to improve HPV knowledge and vaccination intent, reported positive findings, however, only two interventions reported statistically significant improvements between intervention and control groups. 14 interventions reported an increase in HPV vaccination uptake and vaccination series completion among the intervention groups; including when mHealth interventions were compared to control groups or non-mHealth interventions. Some factors noted in the successful interventions included frequency of messages, combinations of multiple interventions including in-person education session, written educational materials, texts alongside call or emails; tailored messages as well as participant's intent to vaccinate at baseline. mHealth interventions potentially show promise as tools in improving short-term vaccination knowledge, intent, and uptake of HPV vaccination. There is however a need to refine components which can promote mHealth interventions' success as well as for the evaluation of such interventions in different contexts and over time.Millions of Americans face food insecurity, yet a universal screening tool is not in place. Food insecurity is known to be associated with poor health outcomes such as heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension in adults, and low school performance and mental illness in children. From January 2017 through February 2017, we utilized a validated two-item screening tool to assess the prevalence of households at risk for food insecurity and conducted a focus group of pediatricians. Patients at a Federally Qualified Health Center in New Haven, Connecticut were screened. Themes that emerged from the focus group were agreement on the high importance of food insecurity screening, concern from caregivers about child neglect, and the difficulty of implementing the screening tool due to time constraints. We achieved successful implementation of the screening tool into the electronic medical record with a high completion rate of 97.9%. Identified barriers to universal screening for food insecurity include lack of efficient methods to direct food-insecure patients to resources and continued stigma regarding food insecurity.
More and more today, forensic identification through deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) examination has achieved greater recognition in supporting Indonesia's law enforcement. link2 Such examination is to determine the origin of a child, paternity cases, genealogical relation, or identifying unknown crime victims. However, along with the development of this DNA material examination, problems arise. DNA undergoes a degradation, commonly known as degraded DNA, which is one of the serious issues frequently encountered by forensic and DNA experts. Some forensic DNA experts take one of the alternatives to overcome this issue by implementing a mini primer set that is through a method to reduce the size of STR assays on DNA core locus examination.

The findings show the DNA contents of molar teeth significantly (
< 0.05) decreased as the effect of high-temperature exposure. PCR result visualization shows CSF1PO is the only locus detected with mini primer exposed to 750°C temperature for 30 minutes (the highest exposure during this research).
This finding suggests that this locus is potential in examining identification through DNA analysis, especially on a degraded condition as the effect of high-temperature exposure. Besides, this could accelerate the identification process especially on mass disaster events or criminal cases.

Many face detection models have been created using several algorithms and techniques. The proposed approach in this paper uses deep learning, TensorFlow, Keras, and OpenCV to detect face masks. This model can be used for safety purposes since it is very resource efficient to deploy. The SSDMNV2 approach uses Single Shot Multibox Detector as a face detector and MobilenetV2 architecture as a framework for the classifier, which is very lightweight and can even be used in embedded devices (like NVIDIA Jetson Nano, Raspberry pi) to perform real-time mask detection. link3 The technique deployed in this paper gives us an accuracy score of 0.9264 and an F1 score of 0.93. Notably, many developmentally associated neurobiological changes (e.g., synaptic pruning, myelination) coincide with peak substances use prevalence rates, particularly for cannabis use. Cannabis remains the most commonly used illicit drug among adolescents with 23.9% reporting cannabis use in the last year (Johnston et al., 2019). Adolescents who engage in cannabis use often show poorer neurocognitive performance and alterations in structural and functional brain development as compared to their non-using peers (Jacobus & Tapert, 2014). Over the past several decades, the cognitive domains most consistently associated with cannabis use among adolescents are learning and memory and several facets of executive functioning (e.g., inhibitory control, decision-making). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive method for probing the neural substrates underlying possible cannabis-related changes in cognition. This brief review aims to synthesize recent findings on the relationship between adolescent (≤25 years old) cannabis use and neural response during task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Findings thus far suggest aberrant, often hyperactive, response to task-based stimuli in youth cannabis users. When considering the future directions of fMRI research with cannabis-using youth, review of existing studies also highlights the need for more prospective research with diverse samples.
Humans have evolved a behavioral system that responds to perceptual cues suggesting the existence of a pathogenic threat in other individuals and the environment. While previous investigations have reported that individuals' sexual preferences are influenced by a pathogen threat, the empirical support for face preference is mixed (i.e., the association of pathogenic threat and individuals' preferences for masculine and/or feminine faces is equivocal). The COVID-19 pandemic provides the opportunity to investigate the association of pathogenic threat and men's and women's preferences for sexual dimorphism of faces in the opposite sex in a real-world pathogenic situation.
