The use of a rodent model can provide a clear indication as to whether prenatal exposure to SSRIs, independent of maternal psychiatric disorders or genetic syndromes, can cause long-term behavioral abnormalities in offspring. Thus, the present study aimed to explore whether prenatal FLX exposure causes long-term neurobehavioral effects, and identify the underlying mechanism between FLX and abnormal behaviors. In our study, 12/mg/kg/day of FLX or equal normal saline (NS) was administered to pregnant Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (FLX = 30, NS = 27) on gestation day 11 till birth. We assessed the physical development and behavior of offspring, and in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was conducted to quantify biochemical alterations in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Ex vivo measurements of brain serotonin level and a proteomic analysis were also undertaken. Our results showed that the offspring (male offspring in particular) of fluoxetine exposed mothers showed delayed physical development, increased anxiety-like behavior, and impaired social interaction. Moreover, down-regulation of 5-HT and SERT expression were identified in the PFC. We also found that prenatal FLX exposure significantly decreased NAA/tCr with 1H-MRS in the PFC of offspring. Finally, a proteomic study revealed sex-dependent differential protein expression. These findings may have translational importance suggesting that using SSRI medication alone in pregnant mothers may result in developmental delay in their offspring. Our results also help guide the choice of outcome measures in identifying of molecular and developmental mechanisms.

Gadolinium leakage in ocular structures (GLOS) on fluid attenuated inversion recovery images (FLAIR) is a novel imaging marker in acute ischemic stroke and other neurological disorders.

In patients with transient neurovascular symptoms who underwent repeated MRI with intravenous contrast agent administration, the presence of acute ischemic lesions on diffusion-weighted images (DWI) as well as the frequency and pattern of blood-brain barrier and blood-retina barrier impairment as demonstrated by the hyperintense acute reperfusion marker (HARM) and GLOS respectively on postcontrast FLAIR were evaluated.

Overall 28 patients with transient neurovascular symptoms (median age 70.5 years; 18 (64.3%) male) were included. Follow-up MRI was performed within 35 (IQR 21-47) hours after the initial MRI. On DWI, acute ischemic lesions were observed in 22 (78.6%). On contrast-enhanced FLAIR, GLOS was observed in 12 (42.9%) patients in 1 (3.6%) only in the anterior chamber, and in 11 (39.3%) in the anterior chamber and vitreous body. HARM was observed in 3 (10.7%) patients. In one patient without ischemic lesion on DWI or HARM on FLAIR, GLOS was observed in the anterior chamber and vitreous body. Presence of GLOS was associated with higher age (p = 0.04) and detection of HARM (p = 0.03).

The current studies examine the extent to which this effect could be mediated by social norms - assessed by perceived popularity of foods - which may be implied by their relative availability. Study 1 (Online) 2340 UK adults estimated the perceived popularity of products. Participants were randomised to see photos of cafeteria shelves varying in the availability of lower-energy options (1/4 lower-energy; 1/2 lower-energy; 3/4 lower-energy) and fullness of shelves (fuller; emptier). Study 2 (Laboratory) 139 English adults were asked to select a snack. Participants were randomised to select from trays varying in the availability of the lower-energy option (1/3 lower-energy; 2/3 lower-energy) and fullness of tray (fuller; emptier). In Study 1, evidence for an interaction was found, such that when shelves were fuller, a higher proportion of lower-energy options led to greater perceived popularity of lower-energy products (1/4 lower-energy 40.9% (95%CIs 40.1,41.8); 3/4 lower-energy 47.2% (46.3,48.0)), whereas when shelves were emptier, a higher proportion of lower-energy options led to lower perceived popularity (1/4 lower-energy 48.4% (47.5,49.2); 3/4 lower-energy 39.2% (38.3,40.0)). In Study 2, when the tray was fuller, participants were more likely - albeit non-significantly - to select a lower-energy snack when 2/3 of the available snacks were lower-energy (35.7% (18.5,52.9)) than when 1/3 were lower-energy (15.4% (4.2,26.5)). For emptier trays, lower-energy selections decreased as the relative availability of lower-energy snacks increased (1/3 lower-energy snacks 36.0% (17.9,54.1); 2/3 lower-energy snacks 27.8% (13.9,41.7)). These studies provide novel evidence that social norms may mediate the impact of availability on food selection. In addition, they suggest that the effect of availability may be moderated by display layout through its impact on perceived product popularity.
