Thyroid dysfunction is related to several lipid abnormalities. There is no consensus about concentration of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in different studies. The aim of this report is to evaluate HDL particle (HDL-P) subfractions across a spectrum of thyroid functions in a Brazilian population.
Individuals were divided into three groups by baseline thyroid function (subclinical hypothyroidism, euthyroidism, and subclinical hyperthyroidism). HDL-P subfractions were analyzed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. To examine the association between HDL-P subfractions and thyroid function, we used univariate and multivariate linear regression models adjusted for demographic characteristics, comorbidities, lifestyle factors, and traditional lipid measurement (HDL-C, LDL-C and triglycerides).
Of 3304 participants, 54.1% were women, 51.2% white, with mean age 50.6±8.7 years. HDL-C and triglycerides levels (p=0.032 and p=0.016, respectively) were higher in the SC hypothyroid group. Enzastaurin There were no sall HDL-P subfractions, and subclinical hyperthyroidism with lower large HDL-P subfractions and higher intermediate HDL-P subfractions.
Compared with what is known about the prognostic value of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] in middle-aged patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), less is understood concerning the role of Lp(a) in oldest-old (≥80 years old) with ASCVD. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between Lp(a) and cardiovascular death (CD) among the oldest-old with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
A total of 1008 patients with AMI, older than 80 years, were consecutively enrolled between January 2012 and August 2018. The clinical characteristics were collected and Lp(a) concentrations were measured by the immunoturbidimetric method at baseline. The relationship between plasma Lp(a) concentration (≤10mg/dL, 10-30mg/dL, >30mg/dL) and CD was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazard models.
During an average of 36.26 months of follow-up, 287 CD occurred. Data showed that patients with high Lp(a) levels (>30mg/dL) had the highest rate of CD (p<0.05). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the high Lp(a) group had the lowest event-free survival rate in the oldest-old with AMI (p=0.030). In addition, subjects with Lp(a)>30mg/dL had a 1.5-fold (95% confidence interval 1.083-2.132) higher risk of CD compared with those with Lp(a) ≤10mg/dL in fully adjusted Cox proportional hazards model.
The current data firstly showed that plasma Lp(a) concentration was associated with the risk of CD in oldest-old with AMI, suggesting that Lp(a) could be a useful adjunctive measurement in the evaluation of CD in this population.
The current data firstly showed that plasma Lp(a) concentration was associated with the risk of CD in oldest-old with AMI, suggesting that Lp(a) could be a useful adjunctive measurement in the evaluation of CD in this population.In order to explore the function of vitamin C (VC) and VC-Na in the relief of heat stress injury in chicken cardiomyocytes, 150 30-day-old specific-pathogen-free chickens were randomly divided into a control group (fed normal drinking water), a VC group (50 μg/mL VC in drinking water), and a VC-Na group (50 μg/mL VC-Na in drinking water). After 7 days of adaptation feeding, the chickens were subjected to heat stress at 40 ± 2 °C and 60%-70% humidity for 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10 h, respectively, and the sera and heart tissues of the chickens were collected immediately at the corresponding heat stress time points. The effects of VC and VC-Na supplementation on the relief of chicken myocardial cell injury following heat stress was studied by detecting the levels of LDH, CK, CK-MB, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the sera, and through histopathological analysis and the expression of CRYAB, Hsp27, and Hsp70 in the myocardial cells. The results showed that supplementing with 50 μg/mL VC or VC-Na significantly reduced the levels of LDH, and CK-MB in serum as well as heat-stress-induced granular and vacuolar degeneration, myocardial fiber breakage, and cell necrosis, indicating effective resistance to heat-stress damage. Additionally, the levels of T-AOC in serum were increased in the VC and VC-Na groups, suggesting enhancing of antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, the expression of CRYAB were induced at 0, 3, 5, and 10 h (P less then 0.01) in both VC and VC-Na group, and that of Hsp70 were induced at 0 h (P less then 0.05) in VC group and at 0, 3, 5, 10 h (P less then 0.01) in VC-Na group. Thus, supplementing chicken diets with VC or VC-Na presented heat-stress damage resistance by enhancing antioxidant capacity and inducing expression of CRYAB and Hsp70.Sixty-seven pregnant Angus cows and their subsequent calves were used in a randomized design to evaluate the effect of inorganic Se injection from 80 d of gestation until weaning on cow reproductive parameters, BW and BCS evolution, milk yield and quality, calf growth and calf hematology parameters. The treatments were as follows 1) Se+ cows were administered Se as sodium selenite at doses of 0.05 mg/Kg of BW at 80, 140, 200, 260 d of gestation and 30, 90, 150 and 240 d of lactation. Calves from Se + cows were Se as sodium selenite subcutaneously injected with a dose of 0.05 mg/Kg of BW at 70, 104, 144 d of age; 2) Control cows and calves were administered sterile NaCl solution (9 g/l) at the same volume and intervals as Se + treatment. At the start of the experiment, forage Se concentration was 58.6 ppb ± 7.6 ppb, and cow whole blood Se concentration was similar (P > 0.10) between treatments (Se+, 29.3 ± 0.3 ppb; Control, 28.1 ± 0.5 ppb). After Se injection, cow whole blood Se concentration was increased (P 0.10) was observed between treatments on hematological results of blood samples from calves at weaning. Results of this study shown that inorganic Se injection was an efficient tool to improve Se-status in cow-calf operation under extensive management. Selenium injection increased follicle diameter in postpartum beef cow, however, did not affect the rest of the variables studied.
