Dye decolorization is of crucial concern for effectively treating dye wastewater. In this study, rapid and effective decolorization of malachite green cationic dye was achieved by tea polyphenols and ferric ions under moderate conditions. Approximately 96.2% of decolorization efficiency could be obtained within the first 10 min at the initial dye concentration of 50 mg/L. The proposed method can perform excellently in a wide pH range of 5-9 and decolorization kinetics of malachite green under different solution pH were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. After the decolorization, only a slight reduction of tea polyphenols was observed, while the strength of peaks assigned to nitrogen-containing groups was significantly weakened, indicating that the N-demethylation reaction might occur during the decolorization process. The nucleophilic attack of deprotonated hydroxyl groups of tea polyphenols was proposed as the decolorization mechanism. The presence of ferric ions at an appropriate dosage could promote the deprotonation process and therefore enhance decolorization efficiency, while excess ferric ions in solution might compete with malachite green dye towards reductive sites on tea polyphenols. The findings from this study provided an economical and environmentally friendly technique for the effective decolorization of dye wastewater. Concrete is significant for construction. A problem in application is the appearance of cracks that will damage its strength. An autogenous crack-healing mechanism based on bacteria receives increasing attention in recent years. The bacteria are able to form calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitations in suitable conditions to protect and reinforce the concrete. However, a large number of spores are crushed in aged specimens, resulting in a loss of viability. A new kind of hydrogel crosslinked by alginate, chitosan and calcium ions was introduced in this study. It was observed that the addition of chitosan improved the swelling properties of calcium alginate. Opposite pH response to calcium alginate was observed when the chitosan content in the solution reached 1.0%. With an addition of 1.0% chitosan in hydrogel beads, 10.28% increase of compressive strength and 13.79% increase of flexural strength to the control were observed. The results reveal self-healing properties of concretes. A healing crack of 4 cm length and 1 mm width was observed when using cement PO325, with the addition of bacterial spores (2.54-3.07 × 105/cm3 concrete) encapsulated by hydrogel containing no chitosan. This work presents the degradation of ampicillin (a highly consumed β-lactam antibiotic) in aqueous media by sonochemical advanced oxidation processes. Initially, effects of frequency, power and operation mode (continuous vs. pulsed) on the antibiotic degradation by sonochemistry were analyzed. Then, under the suitable operational conditions, pollutant degradation and antimicrobial activity (AA) evolution were monitored. Afterwards, computational calculations were done to establish the possible attacks by the hydroxyl radical to the ampicillin structure. Additionally, the antibiotic degradation in synthetic hydrolyzed urine by ultrasound was performed. Finally, the combination of sonochemistry with Fenton (sono-Fenton) and photo-Fenton (sono-photo-Fenton) was evaluated. Our research showed that ampicillin removal was favored at low frequency, high power (i.e., 375 kHz, 24.4 W) and continuous mode (exhibiting an initial degradation rate of 0.78 μM min-1). Interestingly, ampicillin degradation in the hydrolyzed urine by sonochemistry alone was favored by matrix components (i.e., the pollutant showed a degradation rate in urine higher than in distilled water). The sonochemical process decreased the antimicrobial activity from the treated water (100% removal after 75 min of treatment), which was related to attacks of hydroxyl radical on active nucleus (the computational analysis showed high electron density on sulfur, oxygen and carbon atoms belonging to the penicillin core). Sono-photo-Fenton system achieved the fastest degradation and highest mineralization of the pollutant (40% of organic carbon removal at 180 min of treatment). All these aspects reveal the good possibility of sonochemical advanced oxidation technologies application for the treatment of antibiotics even in complex aqueous matrices such as hydrolyzed urine. Activated persulfate, as a member of the broad group of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), has emerged as a promising method for the elimination of microorganisms in aqueous matrices. This study evaluates the disinfection efficiency of this technique with respect to the inactivation of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis in water samples, as representative Gram negative and Gram positive bacterial indicators, respectively. In this perspective, various activators were employed, namely, ferric ion, heating, ultrasound application and UVA irradiation, which exhibited different bactericidal effect, depending on the operating conditions and the structural properties of each species. The highest disinfection rates were achieved with 200 mg/L of persulfate and ferric ion or heating as activators. For instance, 6 Log reductions were recorded within only 10-15 min when 30 mg/L of iron were applied, whereas the same bacterial removal was noted upon heat-activation at 50 °C, but in longer periods (i.e. 45-60 miunder stressed conditions. Taking into account the high mobility and environmental risks due to sulfonamide antibiotics as emerging pollutants, batch-type experiments were performed to study adsorption/desorption of three sulfonamides (sulfadiazine -SDZ-, sulfamethazine -SMT- and sulfachloropyridazine -SCP-) in three agricultural soils. The study was carried out both for un-amended and amended soil samples, using different doses (0, 12, 24 and 48 Mg ha-1) of three different by-products (mussel shell, oak ash and pine bark). Adsorption on un-amended soils was rather low, with percentages between 11 and 45% for SDZ, 20-64% for SMT, and 19-65% for SCP. Both the Linear and Freundlich models fitted well to adsorption curves. In the case of un-amended soils, and regarding the Linear model, the values of the coefficient of distribution (Kd, expressed in L kg-1) were between 0.6 and 1.3 for SDZ, between 0.7 and 1.1 for SMT, and between 0.6 and 2.6 for SCP. As regards the Freundlich model, the values of the adsorption constant (KF, expressed inted in lower desorption percentages, ranging 8.7-11.4% for SDZ, 4.0-10.7% for SMT, and 6.5-16.9% for SCP. This positive effect on the retention of sulfonamides due to pine bark can be attributed to its high organic carbon content (48.6%), as well as to its acidic pHw (4.0). Therefore, pine bark amendment can be considered an effective alternative to increase the retention of sulfonamides in soils, thus reducing their bioavailability and transport to other environmental compartments, and subsequent risks of negative impacts on human and environmental health. Nearshore ecosystems are transitional zones, and they may harbor a diverse microbial community capable of degrading azo dyes under extreme environmental conditions. In this study, thirteen bacterial strains capable of degrading eight azo dyes were isolated in nearshore environments and characterized using high throughput 16 S rRNA sequencing. The results of this study demonstrate that the biodegradability of azo dyes was influenced by their chemical structure and position of functional groups as well as the type of bacteria. The decolorization rate of Methyl Orange (95%) was double that of the heavier and sterically hindered Reactive Yellow 84 ( less then 40%). Shewanella indica strain ST2, Oceanimonas smirnovii strain ST3, Enterococcus faecalis strain ST5, and Clostridium bufermentans strain ST12 demonstrated potential application in industrial effluent treatment as they were tolerant to a wide range of environmental parameters (pH 5-9, NaCl 0-70 g L-1, azo dye concentration 100-2000 mg L-1) including exposure to metals. Analysis of the transformation products using GC-MS revealed that different bacterial strains may have different biotransformation pathways. This study provides critical insight on the in-situ biotransformation potential of azo dyes in marine environments. Faecal pollution modelling is a valuable tool to evaluate and improve water management strategies, especially in a context of water scarcity. The reduction dynamics of five faecal indicator organisms (E. coli, spores of sulphite-reducing clostridia, somatic coliphages, GA17 bacteriophages and a human-specific Bifidobacterium molecular marker) were assessed in an intermittent Mediterranean stream affected by a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Using Bayesian inverse modelling, the decay rates of each indicator were correlated with two environmental drivers (temperature and streamflow downstream of the WWTP) and the generated model was used to evaluate the self-depuration distance (SDD) of the stream. A consistent increase of 1-2 log10 in the concentration of all indicators was detected after the discharge of the WWTP effluent. The decay rates showed seasonal variation, reaching a maximum in the dry season, when SDDs were also shorter and the stream had a higher capacity to self-depurate. High seasonality was observed for all faecal indicators except for the spores of sulphite-reducing clostridia. The maximum SDD ranged from 3 km for the spores of sulphite-reducing clostridia during the dry season and 15 km for the human-specific Bifidobacterium molecular marker during the wet season. The SDD provides a single standardized metric that integrates and compares different contamination indicators. It could be extended to other Mediterranean drainage basins and has the potential to integrate changes in land use and catchment water balance, a feature that will be especially useful in the transient climate conditions expected in the coming years. Emission of N2O represents an increasing concern in wastewater treatment, in particular for its large contribution to the plant's carbon footprint (CFP). In view of the potential introduction of more stringent regulations regarding wastewater treatment plants' CFP, there is a growing need for advanced monitoring with online implementation of mitigation strategies for N2O emissions. Mechanistic kinetic modelling in full-scale applications, are often represented by a very detailed representation of the biological mechanisms resulting in an elevated uncertainty on the many parameters used while limited by a poor representation of hydrodynamics. This is particularly true for current N2O kinetic models. In this paper, a possible full-scale implementation of a data mining approach linking plant-specific dynamics to N2O production is proposed. A data mining approach was tested on full-scale data along with different clustering techniques to identify process criticalities. The algorithm was designed to provide an applicable solution for full-scale plants' control logics aimed at online N2O emission mitigation. Results show the ability of the algorithm to isolate specific N2O emission pathways, and highlight possible solutions towards emission control.
