An enduring ethical dispute accompanies prenatal screening and testing (PST) technologies. This ethical debate focuses on notions of reproductive choice. On one side of the dispute are those who have supported PST as a way to empower women's reproductive choice, while on the other side are those who argue that PST, particularly when made a routine part of prenatal care, limits deliberate choice. Empirical research does not resolve this ethical debate with evidence both of women for whom PST enhances their choices but also persistent evidence of recurrent problems between PST and women's autonomous decision-making. While there have been attempts to remove challenges to reproductive choice, it has been argued that these challenges cannot be removed entirely. Tunicamycin solubility dmso In this paper I provide a historical review of PST technologies' development and in doing so provide a detailed insight into the root causes of this tension between the opposing sides of this debate. This historical account provides evidence that those who championed the early use of these technologies did so in order to achieve a number of wholly different goals other than women's choice and empowerment. These different aims focus on scientific discovery and eugenic goals and, I argue, are irreconcilable with women's choice and empowerment. It thus may not be surprising that the resulting practice of PST continues to resist compatibility with women's choice and empowerment. Ultimately, by understanding the historical foundations of PST we can more effectively assess how to reconcile women's reproductive autonomy with routine prenatal screening.

The aim was to examine the prevalence of and risk factors for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in a community-dwelling cohort of older Chinese American women.

We performed a secondary analysis of a prospective cross-sectional population-based survey of community-dwelling Chinese Americans aged 60 and older in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Taishanese, or Teochew between 2011 and 2013. A clinical Review of Systems (ROS) was used to assess LUTS, which included urinary frequency, urgency, burning or pain, blood in urine, and urinary incontinence.

Of the 1,829 women queried, 28.6% reported LUTS. The cohort of women who reported LUTS had a mean ± SD age of 74.7 ± 8.7years, with a BMI of 23.4 ± 3.7kg/m

and had lived in the USA for 21.5 ± 13.1years. Nearly 90% earned less than $10,000 a year, 50% were married, and 50% used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) once monthly or more. In comparison with women without LUTS, women with LUTS had significantly higher rates of medical comorbidities and a poorer perception of their general health and quality of life. In multivariate regression analysis, any LUTS were significantly associated with older age (aOR 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.04), TCM use (aOR 1.67, 95% CI 1.34-2.07), anxiety (aOR 1.45, 95% CI 1.02-2.06), depression (aOR 2.00, 95% CI 1.53-2.61), and a history of stroke (aOR 1.90, 95% CI 1.19-3.02).

The aim of this study was to develop a Polish language version of the short form of the Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire 7 (PFIQ-7) and to validate it in a sample of Polish-speaking women with pelvic floor disorders (PFDs).

The PFIQ-7 was initially translated in a stepwise fashion as guided by the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) Translation Protocol. First, two bilingual physicians in Poland and the USA performed a forward translation of the PFIQ-7. Next, a community review process was undertaken consisting of one-on-one cognitive interviews with 20 patients. The translated questionnaire was then back translated into English. The final Polish version of the PFIQ-7 was subsequently administered to Polish-speaking patients presenting with PFDs at university-based urogynecology clinics in Poland and the USA along with a Polish version of the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI-20). Internal consistency and criterion validity were assessed.

A total of 225 women with PFDs enrolled in this multicenter study. Complete data from 185 women in Poland and 40 primarily Polish-speaking women in the USA were analyzed. Participants had a mean age of 60.1 ± 11.1years and mean body mass index (BMI) 27.9 ± 4.9. The Poland and United States cohorts did not vary significantly in age, BMI, or education level. PFIQ-7 internal consistency as measured by Cronbach's alpha was good (0.93). Criterion validity was adequate between responses on the PFIQ-7 and PFDI-20 prolapse, colorectal, and urinary subscales (0.62-0.69, p < 0.05).

Methods such as median filtering or masked least-squares smoothing (MLSS) can be used to eliminate artifacts in recordings with just one discharge of the motor unit potential (MUP) at each location. However, more effective artifact removal can be achieved if several discharges per position are recorded. In this case, processing usually involves averaging the discharges available at each position and then applying a median filter in the spatial dimension. The main drawback of this approach is that the median filter tends to distort the signal waveform. In this paper, we present a new algorithm that operates on multiple discharges simultaneously and in the spatial dimension.
