In this study, we aimed to determine the alterations in the retina and peripapillary vascular density in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency.

The patients were divided into two groups regarding their vitamin B12 levels as the low vitamin B12 group (< 200 pg/ml) and the normal vitamin B12 group (≥ 200 pg/ml). The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) and the central macular thickness (CMT) were measured through an SD-OCT analysis. The foveal avascular zone (FAZ), vessel density (VD) of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), and deep capillary plexus (DCP) of the macula, and the VD of the radial peripapillary capillary plexus (RPCP) for the optic disk were determined by OCT-A.

Thirty-three patients were in the low vitamin B12 group and 54 were in the normal group. The mean RNFLT measurements were significantly lower in the low vitamin B12 group (p = 0.001). The RPCP values in all quadrants were significantly lower in the patients with vitamin B12 deficiency (p = 0.001); moreover, there was a significant increase in the FAZ value with a decrease in both superficial (p = 0.001) and deep (p = 0.001) VDs. There was a significant positive correlation between the serum vitamin B12 levels and the RPCP values and superficial and deep VDs, while the FAZ value was negatively correlated with the vitamin B12 levels.

Vitamin B12 deficiency has diverse effects on ocular structures and retinal vasculature. Decreased VDs and increased FAZ may be associated with severe ocular alterations in the long term, which should be further investigated.

The patterns of uveitis in Tokyo have recently changed due to advances in examination tools. We aimed to investigate the changes in the patterns of uveitis between 2004-2015 and 2016-2018.

We retrospectively reviewed the data of 732 patients who visited the Uveitis Clinic at the University of Tokyo Hospital between January 2016 and December 2018. Background characteristics, laboratory results, and imaging findings were analysed. We compared the incidences of uveitis in 2016-2018 and 2004-2015 to identify changes in the patterns.

The most frequent diagnoses were sarcoidosis (8.9%), herpetic iridocyclitis (6.7%), intraocular lymphoma (5.5%), Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (4.8%), unclassified acute anterior uveitis (4.6%), Behçet's disease (4.5%), bacterial endophthalmitis (2.9%), and Posner-Schlossman syndrome (2.6%). Suspected sarcoidosis (20.9%) was the most common cause of unclassified uveitis. The incidence of intraocular lymphoma was significantly higher in 2016-2018 than in 2004-2015. Between 2004 and 2018, herpetic iridocyclitis, bacterial endophthalmitis, and juvenile chronic iridocyclitis exhibited an increasing trend, and the incidences of Posner-Schlossman syndrome, unclassified acute anterior uveitis, Behçet's disease, and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease exhibited a decreasing trend.

The changing patterns of uveitis were characterised by increases in the incidence of intraocular lymphoma. This may be attributed to recent advances in examination tools, the changes in the referred patient population, and the aging Japanese population.

Unfortunately, manual measurement suffer from suboptimal temporal reproducibility, which can lead to delayed or unnecessary intervention. We tested the hypothesis that deep learning could improve upon the temporal reproducibility of CT angiography-derived thoracic aortic measurements in the setting of imperfect ground-truth training data. To this end, we trained a standard deep learning segmentation model from which measurements of aortic volume and diameter could be extracted. First, three blinded cardiothoracic radiologists visually confirmed non-inferiority of deep learning segmentation maps with respect to manual segmentation on a 50-patient hold-out test cohort, demonstrating a slight preference for the deep learning method (p  less then  1e-5). Next, reproducibility was assessed by evaluating measured change (coefficient of reproducibility and standard deviation) in volume and diameter values extracted from segmentation maps in patients for whom multiple scans were available and whose aortas had been deemed stable over time by visual assessment (n = 57 patients, 206 scans). Deep learning temporal reproducibility was superior for measures of both volume (p  less then  0.008) and diameter (p  less then  1e-5) and reproducibility metrics compared favorably with previously reported values of manual inter-rater variability. Our work motivates future efforts to apply deep learning to aortic evaluation. To date, studies have not established whether autistic and non-autistic individuals differ in emotion recognition from facial motion cues when matched in terms of alexithymia. Here, autistic and non-autistic adults (N = 60) matched on age, gender, non-verbal reasoning ability and alexithymia, completed an emotion recognition task, which employed dynamic point light displays of emotional facial expressions manipulated in terms of speed and spatial exaggeration. Autistic participants exhibited significantly lower accuracy for angry, but not happy or sad, facial motion with unmanipulated speed and spatial exaggeration. Autistic, and not alexithymic, traits were predictive of accuracy for angry facial motion with unmanipulated speed and spatial exaggeration. Alexithymic traits, in contrast, were predictive of the magnitude of both correct and incorrect emotion ratings.

The connection between obstructive sleep apnea and secondary erythrocytosis is controversial. We hypothesised that there may be a higher prevalence of erythrocytosis in patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) due to persistent hypoxemia.

The study was a retrospective, cross-sectional review of patients with OHS derived from an established cohort of "non-invasive ventilation" patients at the Department of Sleep Medicine at the Royal Infirmary Medical Centre, Edinburgh (2004-2017). Relevant clinical data were obtained from patient records.

The cohort comprised 74 patients with OHS, 44 men (60%), mean age at diagnosis 54 ± 10years. The mean haematocrit level for the group overall was 0.44, in men 0.45, and in women 0.41. Of 11 patients with erythrocytosis (15%), 7 were men. Thirteen patients (18%) died during follow-up (2004-2017). There was a statistically significant increase in risk of death in patients with higher and lower haematocrit levels compared to that in patients with OHS who had normal haematocrits.

This is the first study showing increased prevalence of erythrocytosis in OHS patients. There was a "U"-shaped correlation with mortality according to haematocrit levels.

While the use of GVC brings considerable economic profits, it has significant environmental impacts, with a risk of threat to sustainability. To make sound development and management strategies, it is necessary to characterize the trade-offs between the benefits and costs of GVC expansion. This study focuses on the expansion of GVC in East China, taking Xiaoshan County as a case study. Remote sensing techniques are used to detect the spatial patterns of GVC expansion from 2005 to 2015; then, field surveys and empirical models are employed to assess the environmental impacts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and plastic waste. buy KC7F2 Lastly, monetary analysis is used to evaluate the trade-offs between the environmental costs and economic gains caused by GVC expansion. The results show that GVC has expanded rapidly from 2005 to 2015 in Xiaoshan County. The GVC expansion has significantly increased GHG emissions and plastic waste from cultivated land. Both the economic benefits and environmental costs of GVC expansion show an increasing tendency throughout the study period. It denotes that economic benefits can compensate for environmental costs of GHG emissions and plastic waste brought by GVC, but the long-term damage to the quality and environmental conditions of cultivated land is still underestimated. We finally propose four major policy implications to achieve a win-win scenario between economic profitability and cultivated land protection associated with GVC.We analyzed the lead content in antlers of 90 adult European roe bucks (Capreolus capreolus) that had been culled between 1901 and 2019 in an agricultural-dominated hunting district in Lower Saxony (Northern Germany). Antler lead values ranged between 0.2 and 10.9 mg/kg dry weight. Median lead concentration was highest after World War II, during a period (1956-1984) of rapidly increasing mass motorization and use of leaded gasoline. Lead levels in antlers decreased markedly after the phase-out of leaded gasoline, but high values were still found in some recently collected antlers. This could indicate persistent lead pollution from former use of lead additives to gasoline, other traffic-related sources, or from agricultural sources (e.g., sewage sludge, fertilizers). This study highlights the suitability of analyzing roe deer antlers for the historical monitoring of changing lead levels in the environment. By collecting antlers and providing them for study, local hunters can significantly contribute to environmental surveillance and the monitoring of environmental pollution by bone-seeking contaminants. This study tried to conduct an investigation into the rate of contamination by heavy metals (HMs) in both the soil used in the plantation of the basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) as well as the plant itself. The proposed methodology works by assessing the concentrations of 4 heavy metals, inclusive of Pb, Zn, Ni, and Cd. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and the bioconcentration factor (BCF) were deployed for assessing the rate of contamination by HMs within the plant. The plant samples were also analyzed at different stages of growth (DSG) through inspection of their reaction to electromagnetic waves (EW). The results indicated that the THQ was substantially high for Pb and Zn, indicative of the high contamination of the study samples by the metals thereof. The hazard index (HI) for non-carcinogenic hazards was also measured for the entire HMs at 46.64, denoting a high level of contamination in the basil. BCF results also indicated Cd as the most absorbed contaminant (BCF = 1.88) by the target plant. The optimal vegetation index for assessment of HM contamination in the target plant, on the report of the findings, was identified as PD312. Therefore, utilizing EW, the reaction of contaminated plants in DSG is forecastable.
