To assess the role of sex hormones in male and female patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), a disease with a pronounced male predilection.

A total of 206 chronic CSC patients (183 males, 23 females) and 59 healthy controls (29 males, 30 females) were enrolled. Serum testosterone, estradiol, albumin, and sex hormone-binding globulin levels were determined using immunoassays. The free fraction of testosterone and the free testosterone/estradiol-ratio were calculated.

No differences in the levels of total testosterone and estradiol were observed between CSC patients and healthy controls. Albumin levels were found to be lower in male CSC patients compared to controls (controls 47.8 g/L, patients 46.0 g/L, adj. p = 0.006). Only in females with CSC, sex hormone-binding globulin levels were found to be lower (controls 94.2 nmol/L, patients 50.4 nmol/L, adj. p = 0.001), together with a higher free testosterone/estradiol-ratio (controls 0.06, patients 0.18, adj. p = 0.018).

In this study, we did not find evidence for a disturbance in sex hormone levels in males with CSC. The lower levels of sex hormone-binding globulin in females with CSC, leading to a disturbed free testosterone/estradiol-ratio, warrants further investigation into the role of androgens in females with CSC.

Gabapentin and pregabalin are drugs to treat neuropathic pain. Several studies highlighted effects on presynaptic terminals of nociceptors. Via binding to α2δ subunits of voltage-gated calcium channels, gabapentinoids modulate the synaptic transmission of nociceptive information. However, the chemical detection of PTMs has lagged far behind their functional characterisation, and relatively little is still known about the selective constraints that govern PTM evolution. In this work, some general and convenient guidances for three-column periodic counter-current chromatography (3C-PCC) were developed. Boundaries and distributions of operating windows of 3C-PCC processes were clarified by model-based predictions. Interactive effects of feed concentration (c0), resin properties (qmax and De), recovery and regeneration times (tRR) were evaluated over a wide range for maximum productivity (Pmax). Furthermore, variation of Pmax was analyzed considering the constraint factors (capacity utilization target and flow rate limitation). The plateau value of Pmax was determined by qmax and tRR. The operating conditions for Pmax were controlled by qmax, tRR and c0 interactively, and a critical concentration existed to judge whether the operating conditions of Pmax under constraints. Based on the comprehensive understanding on 3C-PCC processes, a model-free strategy was proposed for process development. The optimal operating conditions could be determined based on a set of breakthrough curves, which was used to optimize process performance and screen resins. The approach proposed was validated using monoclonal antibody (mAb) capture with a 3C-PCC system under various mAb and feed concentrations. The few existing parental questionnaires on children's digital screen media exposure mainly focus on monolingual children's media habits and address either the quantity or quality of children's media exposure. Inspired by the existing instruments, the current study introduces a new parental questionnaire to comprehensively assess the duration, frequency, content, design, and use of bilingual children's digital screen media exposure at home, before and since the COVID-19 pandemic. Focus group discussions and the first wave of our data collection on 141 3-6 years old Singaporean bilingual children indicate good face validity and internal consistency of the parental questionnaire. Our results reveal substantial differences in children's quantity and quality of daily digital screen media exposure, as well as the discrepancies in their digital media habits between English and their mother tongue languages, before and since the COVID-19 pandemic.The allocation of attention is affected by internal emotional states, such as anxiety and depression. The attention captured by real images of negative faces can be quantified by emotional probe tasks. The present study investigated whether attentional bias toward drawings of negative faces (line drawings and cartoon faces) differs from that of real faces. Non-clinical university students indicated their levels of anxiety and depression via self-report questionnaires, and completed a probe discrimination task under three face image conditions in a between-participants design. Significant correlations were found between bias scores and scores on the self-reported BDI-II under the real face condition. However, two types of face drawings were only weakly correlated with self-report scores. In our probe task to investigate attentional bias to facial stimuli in nonclinical adults, the strength of the relationship between depression and attentional bias to negative face was stronger for real faces than for face drawings.
