Here, we first measured the level of DANCR (differentiation antagonizing nonprotein coding RNA) expression in AKI, and the potential mechanism was further elucidated. MATERIAL AND METHODS We used qRT-PCR to examine the level of DANCR in patient blood serum samples and in HK-2 cells. In addition, DANCR overexpression was established using lentiviral transfection in HK-2 cells. Subsequently, Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and flow cytometry were applied to evaluate the role of DANCR in HK-2 cells treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), western blot and recovery experiments were performed to elucidate the further mechanism. Abexinostat RESULTS We found that DANCR was decreased in the serum of AKI patients and HK-2 cells treated with LPS. Additionally, DANCR promoted cell viability and suppressed cell apoptosis and cytokine production in LPS-treated HK-2 cells. Bioinformatics analysis showed that DANCR served as a sponge for miR-214. Furthermore, DANCR inhibited the expression of Krüppel-like factor 6 (KLF6). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that AKI development could be alleviated by sponging miR-214 and regulating KLF6 expression, which provides a novel potential mechanism involved in the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis-induced AKI patients.BACKGROUND Camptocormia is an axis symptom of Parkinson disease. It remains uncertain whether treatment with medications and surgery are effective. In this study, we assessed the efficacy of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) in Parkinson disease-associated camptocormia and explored some of its mechanisms. MATERIAL AND METHODS Parkinson disease-associated camptocormia was diagnosed by the following procedures. All patients underwent bilateral STN DBS. The patents' camptocormia was rated by degree and MDS Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) item 3.13 before and after DBS surgery. Rehabilitation and psychological interventions were used after surgery, in addition to adjustments of medication and stimulus parameters. The treatment effects on camptocormia were assessed comparing medication-off (presurgery) versus stimulation-on (post-surgery). Ethical approval for this study was provided through the Center of Human Research Ethics Committee (No. 2019-35). This study trial was registered in Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (No. ChiCTR1900022655). All the participants provided written informed consent. RESULTS After DBS surgery, all of study patients' symptoms were improved, with different levels of improvement. The minimum and maximum improvement rates were 20% and 100% respectively. The score of item 3.13 of the MDS-UPDRS III and the degree of camptocormia were found to be obviously improved (P less then 0.05). CONCLUSIONS STN DBS can improve Parkinson disease-associated camptocormia; STN DBS assisted with rehabilitation and psychological intervention appears to be more effective.Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak started in December 2019 that caused difficulties for clinical work. Practical work experience in our spinal outpatient and emergency department during the COVID-19 pandemic is summarized in this article, with combined evidence-based medical evidence to explore a standardized process of diagnosis and treatment for spinal diseases. Outpatient reservation, continuous screening, triage, and isolation, first consultation accountability system, pandemic reporting system, and online revisit were strictly followed. We hope that our experience in prevention and control of COVID-19 can help spine surgeons globally in stopping the spread of COVID-19. Spine surgeons should collaborate with infection control specialists to avoid cross-infection in hospitals and optimize treatment.BACKGROUND Well-functioning health systems and effective preventive measures require registering the exact number and valid data of fatal injuries. The present study aimed to determine the completeness of fatal injuries reported by LMO with the use of the capture-recapture method and finding the reasons for those unregistered fatal injuries in Hamedan County. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in Hamadan County from 22 August 2015 to 21 August 2016. The completeness of fatal injuries reported by LMO, as the main source of fatal injuries was estimated with the employ of the capture-recapture method including Health Department and Police. Log-linear modeling was used for statistical analysis. The number of fatal injuries that probably had not been detected in any three sources was estimated by using the GENLOG command. RESULTS A total of 451 fatal injuries were registered in LMO for one year. The registries were included different amounts of detailed information from at least five variables in the Emergency Medical System (EMS) up to all detailed information in the LMO and Health Department. More fatal injuries occurred in males than females at all ages and the two-sex difference spectrum was wider between about 20 to 45 years old. Among cases of LMO, we found 29 unreported deaths. Therefore, the completeness of reported fatal injuries by LMO was estimated to be 86.9%. CONCLUSIONS Fatal injuries are under-reported by the main source of this type of death in Iran. Identification of fundamental causes, integrated death registry system, and using a standard cause of death classification are needed to promote the registration of fatal injuries.INTRODUCTION The classification of lung carcinoma is based on small biopsies and/or cytology in 80% of patients with non-small cell carcinoma. However, there is no widely accepted classification system for respiratory cytology. The Japan Lung Cancer Society (JLCS) and Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology (JSCC) have proposed a new four-tiered cytology reporting system for lung carcinoma with the following categories (1) "negative for malignancy," (2) "atypical cells," (3) "suspicious for malignancy," and (4) "malignancy." OBJECTIVE The aim of this work was to perform an interobserver reproducibility study to confirm the utility of the four-tiered reporting system on respiratory cytological samples. METHODS We analyzed 90 cytological samples obtained with bronchoscopy. Seven observers classified these cases into each category by reviewing one Papanicolaou-stained slide per case according to the three-, four-, and five-tiered reporting systems. RESULTS The interobserver agreement was fair in the three- (κ = 0.50), four- (κ = 0.45), and five-tiered (κ = 0.45) reporting systems. However, the four-tiered reporting system provided more precise information than the three-tiered reporting system in patient management. The risk of malignancy in the four-tiered reporting system was also stratified well 19.3% for "negative for malignancy," 45.6% for "atypical cells," 74.7% for "suspicious for malignancy," and 88.1% for "malignancy." CONCLUSIONS The reporting system proposed by the JLCS and JSCC was designed to enhance the communication between clinicians and pathologists and among different institutions. It is simple and applicable to cytological diagnosis of any respiratory diseases. We propose establishing an international classification for respiratory cytology, harmonizing the reporting systems proposed by different countries. © 2020 S. Karger AG, Basel.OBJECTIVE The aim of the work was to study the origin of the idea that herpes labialis (HL) in patients with pneumonia and meningitis was believed to be of prognostic importance. BACKGROUND HL is caused by a primary infection or reactivation of herpes simplex type I. In the past, it has been related to pneumonia and meningitis; moreover, HL was believed to be of prognostic importance. METHODS A selection of 19th- and 20th-century textbooks and referred articles was consulted. The relation between meningitis and herpes, type of meningitis, and attributed diagnostic and prognostic importance were studied. In addition, the HL-pneumonia association was studied. RESULTS The Strasbourg physician Charles-Polydore Forget was the first to describe the HL-meningitis association in 1843. Tourdes (1843), Drasche (1859), and Salomon (1864) attributed a favorable prognostic importance to the HL-meningitis relation. In a comprehensive monograph (1866), August Hirsch, although confirming the association, denied the prognostic importance through critical analysis of the data. Few authors attributed a diagnostic importance to the occurrence of HL, suggesting meningococcal meningitis. CONCLUSIONS The HL-meningitis relation, but not the prognostic importance, has been mentioned in most neurological textbooks since then. In contrast to meningitis, in which a prognostic attribution of HL was only a short-lived 19th-century idea, the favorable prognostic importance of HL in pneumonia continued to be described until the 1950s. A possible protective effect of herpesviruses has been found in recent years. One could speculate that the disappearance of the prognostic HL-pneumonia relation could be related to the introduction of antibiotics in the late 1940s. © 2020 The Author(s) Published by S. Karger AG, Basel.BACKGROUND Wearable camera photographs have been shown to be an effective memory aid in people with and without memory impairment. Most studies using wearable cameras as a memory aid have presented photographs on a computer monitor and used a written diary or no review as a comparison. In this pioneering study, we took a new and innovative approach to wearable camera photograph review that embeds the photographs within a virtual landscape. This approach may enhance these benefits by reinstating the original environmental context to increase participants' sense of re-experiencing the event. OBJECTIVE We compare the traditional computer monitor presentation of wearable camera photographs and actively taken digital photographs with the presentation of wearable camera photographs in a new immersive interface that reinstates the spatiotemporal context. METHODS Healthy older adults wore wearable or took digital photographs during a staged event. The next day and 2 weeks later, they viewed wearable camera photographs on a computer monitor or in context on an immersive interface, or digital photographs. RESULTS Participants who viewed wearable camera photographs in either format recalled more details during photo viewing and subsequent free recall than participants who viewed digital photographs they had taken themselves. CONCLUSION Wearable camera photographs are an effective support for event memory, regardless of whether they are presented in context in an experience-near format. © 2020 S. Karger AG, Basel.INTRODUCTION Previous research has linked childhood cat scratches and bites to an increased risk for depression, and childhood cat ownership to increased risk of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and social anhedonia. Our group previously reported that childhood cat bites, but not ownership, related to increased schizotypy severity in an undergraduate sample. METHODS The current study expands this research by inquiring about cat bites and ownership in a transdiagnostic adult sample (N = 162; 51% female; mean age = 38.15, SD = 10.65), composed of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (n = 30), bipolar disorders (n = 30), unipolar depression (n = 23), and nonpsychiatric participants (n = 79). Participants completed a diagnostic interview, scales of symptom severity, and a cat interaction history interview. RESULTS Across the entire sample, self-report of cat bites prior to age 13, but not after, related to greater current severity of overall schizotypy, self-reported and clinician-rated psychotic-like symptoms, and social anhedonia, when compared to individuals who reported no lifetime cat bites.
