The clustering pattern of BDs is generally concordant with a phylogenetic tree reconstructed from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of Japanese toads. Our results suggest that the BDs of Japanese toads have diversified not in response to specific selective pressures, but simply due to population structuring over evolutionary time.

Previous clinical studies have shown that ranolazine (RAN) added to amiodarone (AMIO) might accelerate the termination of recent-onset atrial fibrillation. This study was undertaken to delineate possible mechanisms that contribute to the enhancement of the antiarrhythmic efficacy of RAN-AMIO coadministration.

Ten rabbits were anesthetized and two monophasic action potential (MAP) catheters were sequentially inserted into the right atrium. One MAP electrode was used to pace and record; the other electrode was used only for recording MAP from an adjacent atrial region. Intraatrial conduction time (IACT), 21 intraatrial conduction block (IACB), and atrial post-repolarization refractoriness (aPRR) were consecutively determined by high-rate atrial burst pacing and programmed stimulation, respectively. KP-457 order All parameters were evaluated during baseline and following AMIO (3 mg/kg iv) or AMIO+RAN (2.4 mg/kg iv bolus +0.134 mg/kg/min maintenance infusion).

The IACT remained unchanged post AMIO compared with baseline (37.6 ± 3.8 vs 36.4 ± 2.4 ms), whereas the addition of RAN to AMIO significantly prolonged IACT (50.4 ± 3.6 ms, p < .001). The pacing cycle length producing 21 IACB was 101.2 ± 21.7 ms at baseline , 117.5 ± 15 ms after AMIO (p = 0.265), and 150 ± 14 ms after AMIO+RAN (p < .001). Baseline aPRR was longer following AMIO treatment (35 ± 5 vs 50 ± 9 ms, p < .01) but remarkably prolonged with RAN supplementation (105 ± 11 ms, p < .001).

RAN significantly prolonged the propagation time of rapid atrial depolarizations and potentiated the AMIO-induced moderate increases in aPRR. These mechanisms possibly contribute to the earlier termination of atrial fibrillation when RAN is co-administered with AMIO.

There are few studies on the passive transfer of maternal immunity in the dromedary camel. This study determined total immunoglobulin G concentration, heavy chain antibody (HCAbs) levels, and neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio (NLR) in female camels and their newborn calves. For this, samples were collected from nine she-camels (blood and colostrum) and their calves (blood). IgG concentration and HCAb level were determined in mother serum and colostrum as well as in calf serum using ELISA. The NLR was calculated after the estimation of relative fractions of neutrophils and lymphocytes in collected blood samples using a blood cell analyzer. Both IgG and HCAbs were higher concentrated in camel colostrum than in mother serum. At parturition and before the first colostrum intake, calf serum did not contain any measurable concentration of IgG and only low levels of HCAbs. After colostrum consumption, a rise in IgG and HCAb levels was observed in calf serum. For total IgG, a minimum was reached on day 30 postnatum. While a significant increase in IgG concentration was seen on day 60 postnatum, no significant rise was measured in HCAbs at that age. Only post-colostrum IgG levels in calf serum correlated positively with IgG levels in mother colostrum. Directly after birth, newborn calves showed significantly higher NLR than their mothers. This indicates a pro-inflammatory nature of the calf immune response. The decrease of the NLR on day 60 postnatum may argue for the maturation of the calf immune response at this age.Nigeria has witnessed some significant changes in gambling which have resulted in more people becoming interested in the activity. In an attempt to increase participation, bookmakers have introduced a variety of innovations. Literature has established that this increased participation is inter-generational, cross-cultural, and inter-religious. Particularly among Nigerian youth, participation in gambling cuts across all age groups, socio-economic status, and gender. Both financial and social rewards have been identified as reasons why many youths gamble. Through a qualitative lens, this study investigates how the dynamics of gambling in recent times have affected the biographies of youth within a relatively deprived socio-economic locality in Kwara State, Nigeria. Thirty young gamblers between the ages of 15 and 29 were engaged in a semi-structured interview session. Drawing from the meaning of 'youth' from a sociological lexicon, one can advance this unique narrative of the transitions in gambling activities which can occur as a result of the youths' biographies and socio-economic status. Nigerian youth adopt three specific gambling types as a coping strategy in the face of a crisis-ridden socio-economic structure characterised by poverty, and unemployment. As such, gambling has become a normative activity experimented by the youth to survive the harsh economic conditions. This study therefore argues the need to situate the discourse of youth gambling within the social, cultural, and economic context in which they are located in Nigeria. In addition, the authors provide a framework for understanding the complexity of youth gambling in Nigeria.

Meyerozyma guilliermondii is a yeast which could be isolated from a variety of environments. The vka1 strain isolated and purified from the organic compost was found to have composting potential. To better understand the genes assisting the composting potential in this yeast, whole genome sequencing and sequence annotation were performed.

The genome of M. guilliermondii vka1 strain was sequenced using a hybrid approach, on Illumina Hiseq-2500 platform at 100× coverage followed by Nanopore platform at 20× coverage. The de novo assembly using dual-fold approach had given draft genome of 10.8 Mb size. The genome was found to contain 5385 genes. The annotation of the genes was performed, and the enzymes identified to have roles in the degradation of macromolecules are discussed in relation to its composting potential. Annotation of the genome assembly of the related strains had revealed the unique biodegradation related genes in this strain. Phylogenetic analysis using the rDNA region has confirmed the position of this strain in the Ascomycota family.
