The paper aims to understand the main antecedents related to the blood donation propensity related to both donors and non-donors. With our research, we will analyse the two perspectives to identify similarities and differences concentrating on the Italian context. Blood is a vital resource that strongly affects every national healthcare system's efficacy and sustainability and the system's ability to achieve the goal of universal coverage.
The purpose of this paper is to understand the main antecedents of citizens' blood donation intention and the propensity to encourage communication about blood donation among both donors and non-donors. The Theory of Planned Behaviour is adopted as a theoretical lens. An empirical investigation was performed in Italy, adopting a mixed methods research design. First, a qualitative analysis was carried out through 30 in-depth interviews. Then, a survey was used to quantitatively investigate the intention to donate among both donors (N = 173) and non-donors (N = 87). A conceptual model was developed and tested through Structural Equation Modelling, developing a multi-group approach.
The present study confirms the relations proposed by the Theory of Planned Behaviour, even though some differences between the two groups are shown. The construct Information and Communication is crucial for donors, non-donors, whereas for non-donor inhibitors is vital. Service quality has an impact on the propensity to recommend and communicate the value of blood donation.
This paper reveals the main differences between donor and non-donor perspectives. Fruitful insights for enhancing blood donation awareness are provided.

The prevalence and characteristics of handgun purchasers' criminal charge histories have never been described for a large population of firearm owners, but such information is critical to understanding risk factors for subsequent violence in this population. We sought to characterize legal handgun purchasers in California and compare this group to the state population, to quantify the proportion with a criminal charge history at purchase, and to identify modifiable factors associated with of having such a history.
This cross-sectional study of all 79,927 legal handgun purchasers aged 21-49 years in California in 2001 used log-linear generalized additive models to identify factors associated with having a criminal charge history at purchase. Subjects are from a longitudinal study of incident criminal activity among handgun purchasers.
The majority (91.03%) ofpurchasers were male; whites were overrepresented and Hispanics were underrepresented relative to their population size. At the time of purchase, 16.68% had a criminal charge history and 10.71% had a criminal conviction. Among men with such a history, 31.28% had been charged with a violent crime and 16.54% had been charged with a firearm-related crime. The strongest factor associated with having a criminal charge history was redeeming a pawned handgun (prevalence ratio 1.82; 95% confidence interval 1.71, 1.93).
Despite California's stringent firearm purchase laws, more than 1-in-6 handgun purchasers had a criminal charge history at purchase. This proportion may be higher in states with less restrictive firearm purchasing eligibility criteria.

Fruits and vegetables are susceptible to colonisation by undesired microflora, which, in pre- and post-harvest conditions, negatively impact the quality of these products, leading to a reduction of yield, shelf-life, and marketability. In the few last years, the use of microbial Biological Control Agents (BCAs) has assumed international relevance in order to control harmful microorganisms, as a promising alternative to chemical interventions.
The purpose of this review is to discuss the microbial-based solutions applicable for the biocontrol of the main microbial spoilers, phytopathogens, and human food-borne pathogens affecting fruits and vegetables during their production and storage.
A comprehensive overview of the scientific literature investigating the effectiveness of BCA-based products available on the market is provided, as well as of the most recent patents protecting biotechnological applications in this field. Innovative trends are discussed, with a particular focus on the integration of BCAs to minimise spoilage phenomena and microbiological risks adopting combined approaches.
This study underlines the growing interest about biocontrol strategies to counteract the growth of spoilage and/or pathogenic microorganisms indicating that in the next years a considerable increase of commercial products and patents will be developed worldwide to exploit innovative biotechnological solutions in the sector.

Eradication of hepatitis C virus (HCV) by direct-acting-antiviral-agents (DAAs) was followed by fibrosis regression, but little is available about hepatic steatosis changes after DAAs. The aim of this work was to assess the prevalence of hepatic steatosis among HCV Egyptian patients and the long term changes occur after viral eradication.
This prospective cohort study included 150 HCV patients with significant fibrosis. They were examined by Transient elastography to evaluate liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and hepatic steatosis before treatment, at SVR12 and 1 year after end of therapy.
LSM showed significant positive correlation to pretreatment hepatic steatosis. LSM significantly decreased and hepatic steatosis significantly increased both at SVR12 and one year after DAAs. Patients with steatosis showed significantly higher median LSM and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) values at baseline, SVR12, and one year after therapy. Also, the pretreatment steatosis and body mass index (BMI) had significant negative correlation with fibrosis regression one year after therapy in all studied groups.
Hepatic steatosis is common in HCV Egyptian patients and increases after HCV eradication with DAAs. BMI and CAP values are negatively correlated to hepatic fibrosis regression and positively correlated to steatosis progression one year after DAAs. So, HCV patients with hepatic steatosis may need close follow up for atherosclerotic and HCC risk after DAAs especially if they are overweight.

Taking the well-known drug, Piroxicam as a lead compound, we designed and synthesized two series of 1,2-benzothiazines 1,1-dioxide derivatives to assay their ability in inhibition of HIV-1 replication in cell culture.
In this study, we describe the synthesis, docking study and biological evaluation of 1,2-benzothiazines 1,1- dioxide derivatives.
Most of the new compounds were active in the cell-based anti-HIV-1 assay with EC50 < 50 M. Among them, compounds 7g was found to be the most active molecule. Docking study using 3OYA pdb code on the most active molecule 7g with EC50 values of 10 M showed a similar binding mode to the HIV integrase inhibitors.
Since all the compounds showed no remarkable cytotoxicity (CC50> 500 M), the designed scaffold is promising structure for development of new anti-HIV-1 agents.

The role of astrogliosis in containing and ultimately in eliminating severe destructive inflammation post-trauma appears obvious but is not yet sufficiently understood to use in therapeutic neuroprotective and neuroregenerative strategies. An apparent anti-inflammatory activity of reactive astrocytes is paralleled by their active role in removing excess edema fluid in blood brain barrier damaged by inflammation. Recently elucidated pathogenesis of neurotrauma including SCI, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and of stroke, calls for the following principal therapeutic steps in its treatment leading to recovery of neurologic function (1) inhibition and elimination of destructive inflammation from the COI with accompanying reduction of vasogenic edema, (2) insertion into the COI of a functional bridge supporting the crossing of regenerating axons, (3) enabling regeneration of axons to their original synaptic targets by a temporary safe removal of myelin in targeted areas of white matter, (4) in vivo, systematic monitoring of the consecutive therapeutic steps. The focus of this paper is on the therapeutic step 1.Dopamine supersensitivity psychosis is a clinical concept characterized by an unstable psychotic state and tardive dyskinesia in schizophrenia patients at the chronic stage. This state is thought to be induced by a compensatory upregulation of dopamine D2 receptors, which is provoked by long-term and/or high-dose medications. Recent clinical data suggest that patients who responded well to medication but later exhibit dopamine supersensitivity develop tolerance to antipsychotics' effects and eventually transit to treatment-resistant schizophrenia, indicating that dopamine supersensitivity could be an etiology contributing to treatment-resistant schizophrenia. However, any clinicians and researchers consider dopamine supersensitivity psychosis a minor phenomenon during the clinical course and do not make much of it. This opinion is often based on numerous clinical data which indicating that dopamine supersensitivity psychosis is a relatively rare event. This review examines the data dealing with dopamine supersensitivity with the five themes of frequency, severity, withdrawal studies, switching to aripiprazole, and tardive dyskinesia. These themes' effects on discussions of the clinical meaning of dopamine supersensitivity psychosis are then reviewed. The present review will help clinicians to speculate as to the background of severe psychopathology in a given patient; to make diagnoses of treatment-resistant schizophrenia and dopamine supersensitivity psychosis; and to plan antipsychotic medication regimens with the goal of achieving better long-term prognosis.
