New York City (NYC) was the global epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020. A "shelter in place" mandate was issued in March 2020. The effect on vulnerable populations of adolescent and young adult females has not been well documented.
We administered a monthly online survey between May and November 2020 to adolescent and young adult females participating in a longitudinal study at Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. Surveys asked about death of loved ones, financial impacts, social interactions, exposure to dangerous situations, and mental health impacts. Differences in responses by age, race/ethnicity, and living situation were assessed, and compared to data obtained on the same cohort prior to the pandemic.
Four hundred seventeen females aged 15-28years completed at least one survey, 94% of whom were youth of color. A third of responders (33%) had lost relatives or other people they were close to (loved ones). Most (68%) reported one or more financial losses, and 21% reported food insecurity, with those not living with parents or a guardian experiencing significantly higher rates. One in 10 reported experiencing sexual abuse or interpersonal partner violence during the "shelter in place" period. Over a third (37%) reported symptoms of clinical depression, which represented a significant increase compared to before the pandemic (p= .01). The negative financial impacts and higher proportion of patients with depressive symptomatology remained elevated for adolescents without support at home.
The COVID-19 pandemic had unprecedented negative short-term financial and psychosocial health impacts on inner-city female youth with potential long-term negative impacts.

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is an opioid-like psychoactive substance not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that could be used due to its euphoric, stimulant, and analgesic effects. Kratom is gaining popularity in the U.S. and becoming a reason of concern among pediatricians.
Data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health were analyzed to estimate the prevalence and identify correlates of lifetime and past 12-month kratom use among 13,397 U.S. adolescents. Multivariable logistic regression models were conducted to assess the associations of interest.
Lifetime and past 12-month prevalence of kratom use was .44% (95% confidence interval [CI] .32-.60) and .27% (95% CI .18-.40), respectively. Past 12-month cigarette use was associated with lifetime kratom use (adjusted odds ratio 2.60, 95% CI 1.07-6.35). Past 12-month cannabis use was associated with past 12-month kratom use (adjusted odds ratio 2.48, 95% CI 1.15-5.35).
This first report on the epidemiology of adolescent kratom use provides a baseline to assess kratom use trends in future years and identify potential correlates of use among adolescents.

The aim of this study is to examine levels of COVID-19 stress among Asian youth-compared to white youth-in a Canadian sample, and whether this stress is moderated by a sense of belonging derived from access to contextual (spiritual, cultural, educational) resources.
Data are from a longitudinal study of youth in Alberta, Canada. Participants were those who identified as Asian/Southeast Asian (n= 202) or White (n= 772). Data were collected at three waves. Measures included COVID-19 stress, the Child and Youth Resilience Measure-28 Contextual subscale, and demographics. Data were analyzed using multivariate regression.
Overall at Wave 3, Asian youth reported significantly higher COVID-19 stress than white youth. In moderation analyses, Asian youth who reported higher Wave 1 Child and Youth Resilience Measure-28 Contextual scores also reported higher Wave 3 COVID-19 stress.
We found that experience of a typically protective factor was altered during COVID-19 for Asian youth in this sample. learn more This finding may be related to societal-level discrimination and inequitable treatment experienced by many Asian communities during the pandemic, but future research is needed to test this mechanism.

Medical imaging processing can help in the diagnosis, treatment, and early detection of diseases. It has been considered as one of the modern technologies applied to fight against the COVID-19 crisis. Although several artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning techniques have been deployed in medical image processing in the context of COVID-19 disease, there is a lack of research considering systematic literature review and categorization of published studies in this field. A systematic review locates, assesses, and interprets research outcomes to address a predetermined research goal to present evidence-based practical and theoretical insights. The main goal of this study is to present a literature review of the deployed methods of medical image processing in the context of the COVID-19 crisis. With this in mind, the studies available in reliable databases were retrieved, studied, evaluated, and synthesized. Based on the in-depth review of literature, this study structured a conceptual map that outlined three multi-layered folds data gathering and description, main steps of image processing, and evaluation metrics. The main research themes were elaborated in each fold, allowing the authors to recommend upcoming research paths for scholars. The outcomes of this review highlighted that several methods have been adopted to classify the images related to the diagnosis and detection of COVID-19. The adopted methods have presented promising outcomes in terms of accuracy, cost, and detection speed.
The utilization of medicinal plants and their drugs have the advantage of reducing side effects compared with manufactured antimicrobials. Artificial drugs have unpleasant side effects, further, the number of drug resistant pathogens is increasing, thus huge challenge for control of resistant pathogens. Therefore, the current research explores the potential of partially purified bioactive compounds from Dodonaea viscosa against certain human pathogens.
Healthy leaves of D. viscosa (L.) were collected, extracted and optimized with different solvents. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the extracts was done and antibacterial activities were tested against human pathogens. The active crude extract was further purified by column chromatography and the homogeneity was confirmed by thin layer chromatography (TLC). link2 The partially purified compounds were screened further for antibacterial, antibiofilm and anticancer activities.
The crude ethanol extract of D. viscosa leaves showed the presence of phytochemic9 human lung adenocarcinoma cells. The purified bioactive compounds might be used as therapeutic agents against different microbial infections such as skin infection, throat infection and other infectious diseases.

Streptococcus anginosus is an emergence opportunistic pathogen that colonize the human upper respiratory tract (URT), S. anginosus alongside with S. intermedius and S. constellatus, members of S. anginosus group, are implicated in several human infections. However, our understanding this bacterium to the genotype level with determining the genes associated with pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is scarce. S. anginosus 47S1 strain was isolated from sore throat infection, the whole genome was characterized and the virulence & AMR genes contributing in pathogenicity were investigated.
The whole genome of 47S1 was sequenced by Illumina sequencing technology. Strain 47S1 genome was de novo assembled with different strategies and annotated via PGAP, PROKKA and RAST pipelines. Identifying the CRISPR-Cass system and prophages sequences was performed using CRISPRloci and PhiSpy tools respectively. Prediction the virulence genes were performed with the VFDB database. AMR genes were detected in sing of the opportunistic S. anginosus pathogenicity.
This study aimed to probe the function of microRNA-181b-5p (miR-181b-5p)/protein inhibitor of activated STAT1 (PIAS1)/protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) axis in the progression of alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD).
A rat model of AFLD was established and treated with altered miR-181b-5p, PIAS1 or PRMT1 expression constructs to identify their effects on liver function, serum inflammation, liver tissue oxidative stress, hepatocyte apoptosis and pathological changes of liver tissue in rats using a series of assays. miR-181b-5p, PIAS1 and PRMT1 levels were detected, and the targeting relationship between miR-181b-5p and PIAS1 was confirmed.
MiR-181b-5p and PRMT1 were elevated while PIAS1 was reduced in AFLD rat liver tissues, miR-181b-5p inhibition, PIAS1 overexpressionor PRMT1 inhibition improved liver function, attenuated inflammation, oxidative stress, pathological changes and hepatocyte apoptosis in AFLD rat liver tissues. The impacts of miR-181b-5p inhibition on AFLD rats were reversed by PIAS1 silencing. link3 PIAS1 was confirmed as a target gene of miR-181b-5p, and miR-181b-5p regulated PRMT1 expression through binding to PIAS1.
Inhibiting miR-181b-5p can promote the expression of PIAS1, thereby inhibiting PRMT1 and ultimately improving AFLD.

Microglial cells are the main category of macrophages in the CNS parenchyma, and they represent one of the most important cellular drivers and regulators of neuroinflammation. In this study, nine new organoselenium compounds based on the hybridization of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) skeleton and organoselenium motif (-SeCN and -SeCF3) were synthesized and their potential anti-neuroinflammatory effects were evaluated using LPS-induced BV2 mouse microglia. The cells were first treated with the organoselenium compounds and the extent of oxidative stress and inflammatory response of the cells was determined by measuring the levels of NO, ROS, IL-1β, and IL-18. Among the nine compounds, 1-39 and 1A-38 exhibited the most significant effect on oxidative stress and inflammatory response. Subsequent studies carried out with 1-39 and 1A-38 showed that both compounds could reduce the production of ROS in the cells, probably through down-regulating NOX2 and its downstream targets, including TXNIP (thioredoxin-interacting protein) and NLRP3 (NOD-like receptor protein 3).
