Known for quietly effective home appliances, Miele's RX2 robot vacuum is a great choice because of its cleaning power, beautiful design and great navigation. However, it has some operational issues that prevent it from being ranked as the top overall smart robot vacuum.
The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping technology that uses a LIDAR to map the space and a pair of 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoiding obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once the room is defined and assigned, you can designate virtual no-go areas and sections that you would like to be the robot. You can also manually change cleaning modes, start an automatic clean or watch live feeds from the onboard cameras from the main screen.
The RX2's sensors are effective by registering furniture and obstructions in real-time. Its sweeping and suction power are top-of-the-line and cleans up surface debris from medium-pile carpeting and embedded dust in bare floors. It's not the fastest robotics on the market. It's not the most efficient climber and has issues with metal threshold transition strips.

It also has more advanced automation features than many competitors, including the ability to set virtual boundary lines using its mobile app. It's a powerful robot vacuum, even if its app is a bit sluggish and the 980's wheels spin out when rolling over cables.
We really like the 980, because it makes use of its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneity localisation and mapping (or vSLAM) to store the floor plan of your home. It then uses that information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path for each cycle. The result is cleaner floors, and a cleaner vacuum than the majority of high-end robot vacuums.
