Conclusions These findings suggest that, when anticipating a negative situation, participants preemptively increase positive emotions. However, while positive selections served to temporarily improve mood, the effects did not last throughout the stress task. These results provide more evidence for age similarity than age differences in anticipatory emotion regulation effects and behaviors. The objective of this study is to examine the effects of omega 3 treatment on rat sperm chromatin condensation, DNA damage and spermatogenesis after bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin (BEP) treatment. In this experimental study, 40 male rats were divided into four groups Control, BEP, Omega 3 and BEP + Omega 3. Sperm chromatin condensation and DNA damage were assessed using aniline blue and acridine orange staining, respectively. Results show that the mean percentage of sperms with excessive histone and DNA damage was significantly increased in the BEP group after 9 weeks as compared to control group (p˂0.001). While, in the BEP + Omega 3 group, the mean percentage of sperm with excessive histone and DNA damage was decreased significantly compared with BEP group (p˂0.001). The testicular histomorphometric analysis indicated that omega 3 has a significant effect on the mean number of spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes, leydig cells and testicular histology properties following BEP treatment. The mean count of aforementioned cells significantly increased after omega 3 treatment compared with the BEP group (p˂0.001). Our data indicated omega 3 may be had beneficial effect for improving chromatin condensation, DNA damage during spermatogenesis and testicular histomorphic properties following BEP treatment.RATIONALE Circulating micro RNAs (miRNAs) can be taken up by recipient cells and have been recently associated with the acute respiratory distress syndrome. Their role in host predisposition to the syndrome is unknown. OBJECTIVES To identify circulating miRNAs associated with the development of sepsis-related ARDS and examine their impact on endothelial cell gene expression and function. METHODS We determined miRNA levels in plasma collected from subjects during the first 24 hours of admission to a tertiary care ICU for sepsis. A miRNA that was differentially expressed between subjects who did and did not develop ARDS was identified and was transfected into human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs). RNA sequencing, in silico analysis, cytokine expression and leukocyte migration assays were used to determine the impact of this miRNA on gene expression and cell function. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS In two cohorts, circulating miR-887-3p levels were elevated in septic patients who developed ARDS compared to those who did not. check details Transfection of miR-887-3p into HPMECs altered gene expression including the upregulation of several genes previously associated with ARDS (e.g. CXCL10, CCL5, CX3CL1, VCAM1, CASP1, IL1B, IFNB, and TLR2) and activation of cellular pathways relevant to the response to infection. Functionally, miR-887-3p increased the endothelial release of chemokines and facilitated trans-endothelial leukocyte migration. CONCLUSIONS Circulating miR-887-3p is associated with ARDS in critically ill patients with sepsis. In vitro, miR-887-3p regulates the expression of genes relevant to ARDS and neutrophil tracking. This miRNA may contribute to ARDS pathogenesis and could represent a novel therapeutic target.Recent years have seen a push for providing education in gerontology for social services and health care related disciplines. Equally important are efforts to similarly educate students in the fields of medicine, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (MSTEM). MSTEM professionals can be instrumental in assisting the growing number of older adults and their families in overcoming challenges and building supports that can allow older persons to live self-determined, healthy, and happy lives. The standard gerontological training for students has involved content and instruction on the normative development and experiences of older adults and their families. This article will provide a model for a broad range of students how to understand and effectively work with and on behalf of older adults, through content on the normative, major issues and experiences with a critical focus on the diversity of the population and the multiple intersections of age with other identities.Quantum ESPRESSO is an open-source distribution of computer codes for quantum-mechanical materials modeling, based on density-functional theory, pseudopotentials, and plane waves, and renowned for its performance on a wide range of hardware architectures, from laptops to massively parallel computers, as well as for the breadth of its applications. In this paper, we present a motivation and brief review of the ongoing effort to port Quantum ESPRESSO onto heterogeneous architectures based on hardware accelerators, which will overcome the energy constraints that are currently hindering the way toward exascale computing. We show that a deep-learning neural network potential (DP) based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations can well describe Cu-Zr materials, an example of a binary alloy system, that can coexist in as ordered intermetallic and as an amorphous phase. The complex phase diagram for Cu-Zr makes it a challenging system for traditional atomistic force-fields that cannot accurately describe the different properties and phases. Instead, we show that a DP approach using a large database with ∼300k configurations can render results generally on par with DFT. The training set includes configurations of pristine and bulk elementary metals and intermetallic structures in the liquid and solid phases in addition to slab and amorphous configurations. The DP model was validated by comparing bulk properties such as lattice constants, elastic constants, bulk moduli, phonon spectra, and surface energies to DFT values for identical structures. Furthermore, we contrast the DP results with values obtained using well-established two embedded atom method potentials. Overall, our DP potential provides near DFT accuracy for the different Cu-Zr phases but with a fraction of its computational cost, thus enabling accurate computations of realistic atomistic models, especially for the amorphous phase.
