Two software algorithms (geNorm and NormFinder) were used to evaluate the stability of expression of the 11 genes at different stages of erythrocyte development. Comprehensive analysis showed that expression of GAPDH and TBP was the most stable, whereas ZNF425 and OR8B8 were the least suitable candidate genes. The data also reveal the importance of interpersonal processes in obeying social distancing guidelines.In this article, we detail a comprehensive laboratory evaluation of an immunoassay for the rapid detection of abrin using the Meso Scale Diagnostics Sector PR2 Model 1800. For the assay evaluation, we used inclusivity and exclusivity panels comprised of extracts of 11 Abrus precatorius cultivars and 35 near-neighbor plants, 65 lectins, 26 white powders, 11 closely related toxins and proteins, and a pool of 30 BioWatch filter extracts. The results show that the Meso Scale Diagnostics abrin detection assay exhibits good sensitivity and specificity with a limit of detection of 4 ng/mL. However, the dynamic range of the assay for the quantitation of abrin was limited. We observed a hook effect at higher abrin concentrations, which can lead to potential false negative results. A modification of the assay protocol that incorporates extra wash steps can decrease the hook effect and the potential for false negative results.Background A new real-time method for assessing factors determining aerosol delivery is described. Methods A breath-enhanced jet nebulizer operated in a ventilator/heated humidifier system was tested during bolus and continuous infusion aerosol delivery. 99mTc (technetium)/saline was either injected (3 or 6 mL) or infused over time into the nebulizer. A shielded gamma ratemeter was oriented to count radioaerosol accumulating on an inhaled mass (IM) filter at the airway opening of a test lung. Radioactivity measured at 2-10-minute intervals was expressed as % nebulizer charge (bolus) or % syringe activity per minute infused. All circuit parts were measured and imaged by gamma camera to determine mass balance. Results Ratemeter activity quantitatively reflected immediate changes in IM 3 and 6 mL bolus IM% = 16.1 and 18.8% in 6 and 14 minutes, respectively; infusion IM% = 0.64 + 0.13 (run time, min), R2 0.999. Effect of nebulizer priming and system anomalies were readily detected in real time. Mass balance (basis = dose infused in 90 minutes) IM 39.2%, breath-enhanced jet nebulizer residual 35.5%, circuit parts including humidifier 23.4%, and total recovery 98.1%. This retrospective study focuses on the orthopedic trauma population presenting through an emergency department (ED) and receiving a urine drug screen (UDS) with subsequent urgent surgical intervention. We aimed to evaluate differences in response to general anesthesia in patients with exposure to THC, a major cannabinoid, compared to controls that screened negative for THC. Materials and Methods All ED visits at UC Irvine, a level 1 trauma center between November 4, 2017 and January 7, 2020, were evaluated in this study. Only adult patients who received a UDS and underwent urgent orthopedic trauma surgery within 48 h of ED visit were included in this study. Additional inclusion criteria required an anesthesia time greater than 1 h as well as anesthesia induction and intubation while in the operatinglude the downregulation of vascular cannabinoid receptor 1 and/or altered endocannabinoid levels after exposure to cannabis.Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and associated high mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, there is panic among healthcare workers because of the higher risk of being infected. This study compared knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of COVID-19 among healthcare workers (HCWs) and non-healthcare workers (non-HCWs) and examined common associated factors. A web-based cross-sectional study of 1,871 respondents (430 HCWs and 1,441 non-HCWs) was conducted while lockdown measures were in place in 4 regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Data were obtained using a validated self-administered questionnaire via an online survey platform. Mean scores were calculated and summarized using a t test for both groups. Multivariate linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the unadjusted (B) and adjusted coefficients (β) with a confidence interval (CI) of 95%. The mean scores were slightly higher among HCWs than non-HCWs, but not statistically significant. Being worried about contracting COVID-19 was the only common factor associated with knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions between the 2 groups.
