Change was viewed as both a threat and an opportunity. Suppression of neurotrophins has been proposed to cause depression. Peripheral brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its precursor, pro-BDNF have been shown to be altered in depression. To compare serum pro-BDNF and BDNF levels, depression, anxiety, and quality of life (QoL) in psoriasis patients, diseased, and healthy controls, to assess impact of 12-week antipsoriatic treatment on abovementioned markers. At baseline, all groups completed Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-II (STAI-II) and DLQI; serum BDNF, proBDNF levels were measured. These were repeated after 3-months of treatment in psoriasis patients. Depression and anxiety were significantly higher, QoL was poorer in psoriasis. ProBDNF and proBDNF/BDNF ratios were not different among groups at baseline but significantly decreased after treatment in psoriasis. Depression and QoL improved significantly, BDNF and anxiety scores did not change. Altered pro-BDNF and proBDNF/BDNF ratios may have a role in depression pathogenesis in psoriasis. Antipsoriatic treatment causes improvement in depression, QoL, and reduction of proBDNF and proBDNF/BDNF ratios. Caregivers of youth with mental health (MH) challenges are often faced with complex problems in relation to caring for their youth. Family Connections™ (FC) is a 12-week skills training program for families of individuals with MH challenges, developed originally for Borderline Personality Disorder. Research is needed to examine the effectiveness of FC for caregivers of youth with diverse MH challenges.

To examine the effectiveness of FC for caregivers of youth with MH challenges.

A total of 94 caregivers of youth with MH challenges participated in FC, across three sites in Ontario, Canada. Assessments occurred at baseline, 6weeks, 12weeks and follow-up. Primary outcomes include the Burden Assessment Scale and The Stress Index for Parents of Adolescents. Secondary outcomes included the caregiver's report of child behaviour, affect, mastery, coping and grief. Linear mixed model analyses were conducted, where time and the time×site interaction were defined as the fixed effects.

Statistically significant improvements over time were observed across outcome measures, including caregiver burden, grief, coping, and other measures. The time×site interaction was only significant for burden (P=.005).

This study demonstrates the effectiveness of FC for caregivers of youth with MH challenges. Future research should focus on differences across geographical sites and facilitation models.

Vascular refilling occurs to preserve hemodynamic stability during hemodialysis (HD). Recent studies report a feasible and noninvasive method to determine absolute blood volume (ABV), and estimate vascular refilling during HD. The objective of this study is to analyze if lowering dialysate temperature modifies variations in ABV during HD.

The study was performed in 50 patients under HD. During two different sessions, relative blood volume was assessed using dialysate temperatures of 35.5°C (cool dialysate) and 36.5°C (neutral dialysate). ABV and vascular refilling were calculated using Kron et al methodology.

Thirty-nine intradialytic morbid events (IMEs) were observed in 30 patients, 14 under cool dialysate and 25 during neutral dialysate. We did not found statistically differences in ABV or in refilling volume between cool and neutral temperature.
