Results The tract volume (TV) of the affected corticobulbar tract was lower in dysphagic patients than in healthy controls (P less then 0.001). According to dysphagia severity, TV of the unaffected corticobulbar tract was higher in the mild dysphagia group than in the moderate-to-severe dysphagia group (P=0.012). TV of the unaffected corticobulbar tract was independently associated with dysphagia severity according to the logistic regression model (adjusted odds ratio=0.817; 95% CI, 0.683-0.976). Conclusions The corticobulbar tract was affected after MCA stroke and may be associated with dysphagia. A higher corticobulbar tract volume in the unaffected hemisphere was indicative of better swallowing function in dysphagic patients after MCA stroke.Resin-based reconstructive/restorative materials with antibacterial effects are potentially useful for preventing dental and oral diseases. To this end, the immobilization of an antibacterial component on the surface of a resin by incorporating polymerizable bactericide such as a quaternary ammonium compound-monomer 12-methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide (MDPB) is an effective technique. However, the effectiveness of immobilized bactericide is reduced by salivary protein coverage. We address this issue by utilizing 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymer, which exhibits protein repellency, with MDPB to fabricate a novel copolymer, which served as a surface coating on a methacrylate-based resin. This coating provided a more hydrophilic surface than that provided by MDPB coating and reduced the adsorption of bovine serum albumin and salivary protein. To evaluate bacterial growth on the contact surface, Streptococcus mutans suspension was placed on the coated specimen. After 24-h incubation, MDPB/MPC copolymer exhibited killing effects against S. mutans. BMS927711 Moreover, confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate biofilm formation after 48-h incubation in S. mutans suspension, which revealed sparse biofilm and dead bacteria in biofilm on the surface coated with MDPB/MPC. Overall, the proposed surface coating on dental resins exhibited protein-repellent ability and inhibitory effects against bacteria and oral biofilms. The exceptional nature of WO3-x dots has inspired widespread interests, but it is still a significant challenge to synthesize high-quality WO3-x dots without using unstable reactants, expensive equipment, and complex synthetic processes. Herein, we report the synthesis of ligand-free WO3-x dots that were highly dispersible and rich in oxygen-vacancies by a simple but straightforward exfoliation of bulk WS2 and a mild follow-up chemical conversion. Surprisingly, the WO3-x dots were emerged as coreactants for the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of Ru(bpy)32+ with a comparable ECL efficiency to the well-known Ru(bpy)32+ /tripropylamine (TPrA) system. Moreover, compared to TPrA, whose toxicity remains a critical issue of concern, the WO3-x dots were ~300-fold lower toxic. The potent of WO3-x dots was further explored in a showcase for the detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with the most competitive limit of detection so far. This work would not only open a new way to synthesize WO3-x dots with superior properties but also stimulate an emerging application in clinic ECL diagnosis as coreactants with uncompromised high performance and unprecedented low toxicity.Reading and math attainment develop during elementary grades. Questions remain, though, about the co-developmental nature of the relation between reading and math. This study examined dynamic, longitudinal pathways between reading and math in first through fourth grades. Participants of the study were 554 academically at-risk children (Mage at the first assessment point = 6.57 years; SD = 0.38) from Texas Project Achieve. Children were assessed utilizing the Woodcock-Johnson-III reading and math measures. Results from dynamic bivariate latent change score models indicated unidirectional longitudinal coupling effects from reading to math. Specifically, average and high levels of reading performance were associated with subsequent gains in math growth, in particular for below average performing children in math. In contrast, low levels of reading performance had negligible or no amplifying influences on change in math growth. The nature of the dynamics was replicated even when controlling for nonverbal cognitive abilities. Results demonstrated that good reading skills pave the way for children to develop their math skills. Such findings underscore the importance of considering reading performance in treating math difficulties. Objective To describe a simple and effective surgery for feline eyelid agenesis. Procedure Free oral mucosal grafts were harvested from the upper lips of the surgical patients. A recipient bed was created by incising the conjunctiva at the conjunctival-skin border and opening a space in the tissue with blunt dissection without removal of tissue. The free oral mucosal graft was sutured into the space with simple continuous suture pattern of 7-0 Vicryl. Results Eyelids were cosmetically acceptable at final examination, and areas of coloboma appeared less prominent. Patient comfort was improved in all subjects as subjectively noted by decreased blepharospasm. All grafts were successfully incorporated. All patients developed brown-colored crusting over the grafts within days of the surgery, which gradually resolved over a 4- to 6-week period. Three of seven patients developed few trichiatic hairs at the donor-recipient junction, and two of these patients had follow-up cryoepilation. Conclusion For feline eyelid agenesis, free oral mucosal graft implantation was successful in creating space between fur and cornea with insertion of smooth-surfaced, hairless tissue, alleviating the discomfort of hair contacting the cornea. The extra tissue can also create a small overhang or fold of tissue (pseudo-lid) which may also be protective. For two cases, cryoepilation of few trichiatic hairs at the donor-recipient border was performed at a later date. As illustrated by case 3, use of a long and wide rectangular graft with squared edges is recommended to lessen the chance of trichiasis at lateral or medial edges of recipient-donor junctions.
