However, high carrier concentration that originated from intrinsic Sn vacancies and relatively high thermal conductivity of pristine SnTe lead to poor TE efficiency, which makes room for improving its TE properties. In this study, we present that the Na incorporation into the SnTe matrix is helpful for modifying the electronic band structure, optimization of carrier concentration, introducing dislocations, and kink planes; benefiting from these synergistic effects obviates the disadvantages of SnTe and makes a significant improvement in TE performance. We reveal that Na favorably impacts the structure of electronic bands by valence, conduction band engineering, leading to a nice enhancement in the Seebeck coefficient, which exhibits the highest power factor value of 37.93 μWcm-1 K-2 at 898 K, representing the best result for the SnTe material system. Moreover, a broader phonon spectrum is introduced by new phonon-scattering centers, scattered by dislocations and kink planes which suppressed lattice thermal conductivity to 0.57 Wm-1 K-1 at 898 K, which is much lower than that of pristine SnTe. Ultimately, a maximum ZT of 1.26 at 898 K is achieved in the Sn1.03Te + 3% Na sample, which is 97% higher than that of the pristine SnTe, suggesting that SnTe-based materials are a robust candidate for TE applications specifically, an ideal alternative of lead chalcogenides for TE power generation at high temperatures.β-Cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks (β-CD COFs) show great potential in enantioseparation due to their uniformly distributed chiral recognition sites and good chemical stability. The hydroxyl and amino groups of β-CD COFs enable facile post-modification to introduce the desired functionality into the frameworks. In this study, we perform post-modification of β-CD COFBPDA with 1,4-butane sultone and [(3R,4R)-4-acetyloxy-2,5-dioxooxolan-3-yl] acetate to construct two kinds of novel functional β-CD COFs. The capillary columns prepared with these two functional β-CD COFs separated chiral dihydropyridines and fluoroquinolones with excellent selectivity and repeatability in capillary electrochromatography, while β-CD COFBPDA-modified capillary columns did not present the chiral recognition ability for these drugs. The mechanism of chiral recognition and the enhanced enantioselectivity of functional β-CD COFs were further demonstrated by molecular docking simulation. The divergent chiral separation performances of β-CD COFs suggest that the introduction of functional groups enables the modification of β-CD COF properties and tuning of its chiral recognition abilities for the diversity of enantioseparation.Negative-ion mode electrospray ionization of solutions of ethanol (RF0OH), 2-fluoroethanol (RF1OH), 2,2-difluoroethanol (RF2OH), and/or 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (RF3OH) produces anionic dimers of the types (RFnO)2H- and (RFnO)(RFn+1O)H-. The exchange reactions of these anionic dimers with the neutral alcohols are examined in a quadrupole-ion trap to extract kinetic data, from which the reaction Gibbs energies are obtained. In all cases, the formation of anionic dimers containing the more highly fluorinated alcohols is favored. Quantum chemical calculations confirm this trend and, besides affording structural data, also determine the dissociation energies of the anionic dimers. These dissociation energies are much higher than those of the corresponding neutral dimers and increase further for the more highly fluorinated alcohols due to the stronger hydrogen-bond donor ability of the latter. The present results on the interaction of individual alkoxide anions and neutral alcohol molecules contribute to a better understanding of the association of the fluorinated alcohols in solution.Purpose The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of hearing disability on employment rates; examine how various factors are associated with employment; and identify workplace accommodations available to persons with hearing disabilities in Canada.Material and methods A population-based analysis was done using the data collected through the 2017 Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD), representing 6 million (n = 6 246 640) Canadians. A subset of the complete dataset was created focusing on individuals with a hearing disability (n = 1 334 520). Weighted descriptive and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Results In 2017, the employment rates for working-age adults with a hearing disability were 55%. Excellent general health status (OR 3.37; 95% CI 2.29-4.96) and daily use of the internet (OR 2.70; 95% CI 1.78-4.10) had the highest positive effect on the employment rates. The top three needed but least available accommodations were communication aids (16%), technical aids (19%), and accessible parking/elevator (21%).Conclusion Employment rates for persons with a hearing disability are lower than the general population in Canada. Employment outcomes are closely associated with one's general health and digital skills. Lack of certain workplace accommodations may disadvantage individuals with a hearing disability in their employment.Implications for RehabilitationPeople with severe hearing disabilities and those with additional disabilities may need additional and more rigorous services and supports to achieve competitive employment. It is important for the government to improve efforts toward inclusive education and develop strategies that promote digital literacy for job seekers with hearing disabilities.Officials concerned with implementing employment equity policies in Canada should focus on finding strategies that enable employees to have supportive conversations with their employers regarding disability disclosure and obtaining required accommodations. The stepwise hydration of the benzonitrile•+ radical cation with one-seven H2O molecules was investigated experimentally and computationally with density functional theory in C6H5CN•+(H2O)n clusters. The stepwise binding energies (ΔHn-1,n°) were determined by equilibrium measurements for C6H5CN•+(H2O) and for •C6H4CNH+(H2O)n with n = 5, 6, and 7 to be 8.8 and 11.3, 11.0, and 10.0 kcal/mol, respectively. The populations of n = 2 and 3 of the C6H5CN•+(H2O)n clusters were observed only in trace abundance due to fast depletion processes leading to the formation of the hydrated distonic cations •C6H4CNH+(H2O)n with n = 4-7. The observed transition occurs between conventional radical cations hydrated on the ring in C6H5CN•+(H2O)n clusters with n = 1-3 and the protonated radical •C6H4CNH+ (distonic ion) formed by a proton transfer to the CN nitrogen and ionic hydrogen bonding to water molecules in •C6H4CNH+(H2O)n clusters with n = 4-7. The measured binding energy of the hydrated ion C6H5CN•+(H2O) (8.8 kcal/mol) is similar to that of the hydrated benzene radical cation (8.5 kcal/mol) that involves a relatively weak CHδ+···O hydrogen bonding interaction. Also, the measured binding energies of the •C6H4CNH+(H2O)n clusters with n = 5-7 are similar to those of the protonated benzonitrile (methanol)n clusters [C6H5CNH+(CH3OH)n, n = 5-7] that involve CNH+···O ionic hydrogen bonds. The proton shift from the para-•C ring carbon to the nitrogen of the benzonitrile radical cation is endothermic without solvent but thermoneutral for n = 1 and exothermic for n = 2-4 in C6H5CN•+(H2O)n clusters to form the distonic •C6H4CN···H+(OH2)n clusters. The distonic clusters •C6H4CN···H+(OH2)n constitute a new class of structures in radical ion/solvent clusters.Previous research has demonstrated the effect of supervisor support on the job satisfaction of long-term care workers (LTCW); however, much less is known about how this effect differs among race/ethnicity or immigration groups. We examined how supervisor support mediates the associations between race/ethnicity, immigration status, and job satisfaction among nursing assistants (NAs). Data of 2749 NAs were extracted from the National Nursing Assistant Survey (2004). Findings indicated that NAs of non-Hispanic Black and other races and immigrant workers were more likely to be satisfied with their jobs compared to White and non-immigrant workers, and the associations were mediated by NAs' perceived supervisor support. Minority or immigrant LTCW may be more sensitive to supervisory support and more grateful if they received support from supervisors. Managers should be aware of these racial differences and by being supportive they may improve NAs job satisfaction and reduce turnover rates. The binding free energy between a ligand and its target protein is an essential quantity to know at all stages of the drug discovery pipeline. Assessing this value computationally can offer insight into where efforts should be focused in the pursuit of effective therapeutics to treat a myriad of diseases. In this work, we examine the computation of alchemical relative binding free energies with an eye for assessing reproducibility across popular molecular dynamics packages and free energy estimators. The focus of this work is on 54 ligand transformations from a diverse set of protein targets MCL1, PTP1B, TYK2, CDK2, and thrombin. These targets are studied with three popular molecular dynamics packages OpenMM, NAMD2, and NAMD3 alpha. Trajectories collected with these packages are used to compare relative binding free energies calculated with thermodynamic integration and free energy perturbation methods. The resulting binding free energies show good agreement between molecular dynamics packages with an average mean unsigned error between them of 0.
