It is evident that people with disabilities worldwide face digital divide; although this divide has been mitigated owing to greater access to technologies, a gap remains in terms of Internet use. BGJ398 Given that South Korea has one of the highest Internet access rates, it is necessary to examine how adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) access the Internet, and what correlates with Internet usage.

A total of 298 adults with IDD in South Korea participated in the survey.

The participants reported benefits from the Internet including increased opportunities for leisure and entertainment, updated news and networking with friends. Internet access was found to be pervasive among people of younger ages and less severe disabilities. Further, Internet usage corresponded to material access, digital literacy and a positive attitude towards digital applications.

Targeted digital literacy programmes can be developed for adults with IDD.

We describe the phenotype of a patient compatible with HD. Several family members were reported as affected, and a paternal cousin and his daughter carried 39 and 42 CAG/CAA. HD genetic testing in proband showed homozygosity for a 14 CAG/CAA allele. Considering the phenotype and family history, HTT gene sequence was performed, revealing heterozygosity for the c.51C>G variant that changes the last nucleotide before the CAG tract, causing misannealing of forward primer (HD344) and dropout of the expanded allele. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis performed with an alternative forward primer demonstrated a 41 CAG/CAA allele. The c.51C>G variant was not detected in the affected cousin, thus suggesting a de novo occurrence. The lack of biological samples from the proband father and grandmother prevented further investigations to establish in which family member the variant occurred. These data indicate that patients presenting HD phenotype, and homozygous for a normal HTT CAG/CAA allele should be thoroughly evaluated for the presence of a genetic variant, even de novo, within the repeat region that may hamper genetic diagnosis.Eusocial insects have evolved diverse particle-use behaviors. A previous study reported that red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, deposited soil particles on substances treated with essential balm, a fire ant repellent. We hypothesized that S. invicta modifies inaccessible surfaces by covering them with soil particles to facilitate food search and transportation. Here, laboratory experiments were conducted to study the particle-covering behavior of S. invicta in response to viscose surfaces or surfaces treated with essential balm or liquid paraffin in the presence of real food (sausage) or non-food objects (acrylic plates). S. invicta workers deposited significantly more soil particles on these three types of treated surfaces than on untreated surfaces. In addition, significantly more particles were relocated on viscose and paraffin-smeared surfaces in the presence of food than in the presence of non-food objects. The particle-covering behavior on viscose surfaces was also observed in the field. Interestingly, when no soil particles were available, ants searched and transported food on viscose surfaces only if the surfaces were artificially covered with sufficient quantities of soil particles but could not do so on viscose surfaces without soil particles or with insufficient quantities of soil particles. In addition, ants actively relocated particles to cover viscose surfaces if the transportation distance was within 200 mm, whereas significantly fewer particles were relocated at longer transportation distances (400 mm). Our study provides a novel example of particle use by fire ants during foraging.Transmembrane anion transport is an important biological process in maintaining cellular functions. Thus, synthetic anion transporters are widely developed for their biological applications. Imidazolinium was introduced as anion recognition site to a multiblock amphiphilic structure that consists of octa(ethylene glycol) and aromatic units. Ion transport assay using halide-sensitive lucigenin and pH-sensitive 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate (HPTS) revealed that imidazolinium-based multiblock amphiphile (IMA) transports anions and showed high selectivity for nitrate, which plays crucial roles in many biological events. Temperature-dependent ion transport assay using 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) indicated that IMA works as a mobile carrier. 1 H NMR titration experiments indicated that the C2 proton of the imidazolinium ring recognizes anions via a (C-H)+ ⋅⋅⋅X- hydrogen bond. Furthermore, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations revealed a dynamic feature of IMA within the membranes during ion transportation.

To compare pain, quality of life (QoL), sexual function and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) between rigid (RC) and flexible cystoscopy (FC).

Forty-one patients who were planned control cystoscopies were enrolled the study. At the first cystoscopy, 20 patients (Group 1) and other 21 patients (Group 2) were performed by flexible (15.5 Fr) and rigid cystoscope (15.5 Fr), respectively. At the second cystoscopies, the patients in group 1 and group 2 were performed by rigid and flexible cystosacope, respectively. In all the patients, pain was measured with visual pain scale (VPS) shortly after cystoscopy. Also, SF, QoL and LUTS were assessed by IIEF, SF-36 and MLUTS forms, respectively.

While 22 of the patients preferred FC, the other 19 preferred RC (P>0.05). There were no statistical differences between VPS, IIEF, SF-36 and MLUTS scores of the two groups. In multivariate analysis regarding the quality of life, although sexual function, pain and cystoscopy type did not affect QoL, voiding symptoms affected independently QoL. After both cystoscopy type, IIEF, SF-36 and MLUTS scores did not change statistically.

The results showed that the effects on pain, sexual function, QoL and LUTS of RC and FC were similar. In general, cystoscopy did not affect negatively on QoL, sexual function and LUTS of the patients.
