We sought to create a nationwide, risk-adjusted model to allow for LOS benchmarking based on the data from a national burn registry. Using data from the American Burn Association's Burn Care Quality Platform, we queried admissions from 7/2015 to 6/2020 and identified 130,729 records reported by 103 centers. Using 22 predictor variables, comparisons of unpenalized linear regression and Gradient boosted (CatBoost) regressor models were performed by measuring the R2 and concordance correlation coefficient on the application of the model to the test dataset. The CatBoost model applied to the bootstrapped versions of the entire dataset was used to calculate O/E ratios for individual burn centers. Analyses were run on 3 cohorts all patients, 10-20% TBSA, >20% TBSA. The CatBoost model outperformed the linear regression model with a test R2 of 0.67 and CCC of 0.81 compared with the linear model with R2=0.50, CCC=0.68. The CatBoost was also less biased for higher and lower LOS durations. Gradient-boosted regression models provided greater model performance than traditional regression analysis. Using national burn data, we can predict LOS across contributing burn centers while accounting for patient and center characteristics, producing more meaningful O/E ratios. These models provide a risk-adjusted LOS benchmarking using a robust data source, the first of its kind, for burn centers.Due to COVID-19, hospitals underwent drastic changes to operating room policy to mitigate the spread of the disease. Given these unprecedented measures, we aimed to look at the changes in operative volume and metrics of the burn surgery service at our institution. A retrospective review was conducted for operative cases and metrics for the months of March to May for 2019, 2020, and 2021, which correspond with pre-COVID, early COVID (period without elective cases), and late COVID (period with resumed elective cases). Inclusion criteria were cases related to burns. Case types and operative metrics were compared amongst the three time-periods. Compared to the hospital, the burn service had a smaller decrease in volume during early COVID (28.7% vs 50.1%) and exceeded prepandemic volumes during late COVID (+21.8% vs -4.6%). There was a significant increase in excision and grafting cases in early and late COVID periods (P < .0001 and P < .002). There was a significant decrease in laser scar procedures that persisted even during late COVID (P < .0001). The projected and actual lengths of cases significantly increased and persisted into late COVID (P < .01). COVID-19 related operating room closures led to an expected decrease in the number of operative cases. However, there was no significant decline in the number of burn specific cases. The elective cases were largely replaced with excision and grafting cases and this shift has persisted even after elective cases have resumed. This investigation assesses the relationship between older age and discharge disposition after burns in a nationally representative sample. We queried the 2007 to 2015 National Trauma Data Bank for non-fatal burn hospitalizations in older adults. Pre-defined age categories were 55 to 64 years (working-age comparison group), 65 to 74 years (young-old), 75 to 84 years (middle-old), and 85+ years (old-old). Covariables included inhalation injury, comorbidities, burn total body surface area, injury mechanism, and race/ethnicity. The primary objective of this study is to validate previous Pediatric Injury Quality Improvement Collaboration (PIQIC) findings by using a national burn registry to evaluate LOS per TBSA burn relative to burn mechanism, sociodemographic characteristics, and clinical factors which influence this ratio. We evaluated patients 0-18 years old who sustained a burn injury and whose demographics were submitted to the National Burn Registry (NBR) dataset from July 2008 through June 2018. Mixed effects generalized additive regression models were performed to identify characteristics associated with the LOS per TBSA burn ratio. Among 51,561 pediatric burn patients, 45% were Non-Hispanic White, 58% were male, and median age was 3.0 years old (IQR 1.0, 9.0). The most common burn mechanism was scald (55.9%). The median LOS per TBSA burn ratio across all cases was 0.9 (IQR 0.4, 1.75). In adjusted models, scald burns had a mean predicted LOS per TBSA burn value of 1.2 while chemical burns had the highest ratio (4.8). Non-Hispanic White patients had lower LOS per TBSA burn ratios than all other races and ethnicities (p < .05). BDNF plays crucial roles for development, target innervation, and survival of gustatory neurons and taste buds. The behavioural test in this study showed that vehicle-treated wild-type mice prefered 10 mM sucrose over water, whereas vismodegib treatment in wild-type mice caused total taste loss. Gustducin-BDNF mice had a significantly increased preference for low concentration of sucrose solution over water compared to wild-type mice, and most importantly the transgenic mice were able to detect low concentrations of sucrose following vismodegib treatment. We evaluated taste cell morphology, identity, innervation and proliferation using immunohistochemistry. Counteracting the negative side effects of vismodegib treatment might improve compliance and achieve better outcome in patients suffering from advanced BCC.This retrospective observational study compared severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA load in nasopharyngeal specimens (NPs) from patients with breakthrough coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the Omicron BA.1 or BA.2 sublineages. The convenience sample was composed of 277 outpatients (176 female/112 male; median age, 48 years; range, 12-97) with breakthrough COVID-19 (n = 130 due to BA.1 and n = 147 due to BA.2). All participants had completed a full vaccination schedule and 56% had received a booster vaccine dose at the time of COVID-19 breakthrough microbiological diagnosis. NPs were collected within 7 days (median 2 days) after symptom onset. The TaqPath COVID-19 Combo Kit (Thermo Fisher Scientific) was used to estimate viral loads in NPs.
