Vinyl-ester resin is a more robust material than polyester, offering superior thermal resistance and resilience. Furthermore, vinyl-ester resin makes an excellent bond with carbon fibre reinforcements used extensively in high performance craft applications.

Reichhold offers several Dion vinyl ester formulations designed to meet different marine fabrication approaches, such as low-VOC Hydrex 100-LV with its reduced styrene content that helps fabricators meet industrial emission regulations.

As with polyesters, vinyl esters provide excellent wetting and flow properties for hand lay-up or spray-up fabrication, long adjustable gel times and low peak exotherm peak exotherm levels that facilitate resin infusion processes. They reportedly cure to higher strengths than polyesters while their hardened form offers good toughness with relatively high modulus of elasticity for tough applications.

Visby Shipyards AB of Sweden was one of the pioneering boatbuilders to use vinyl esters extensively, using rubber-modified vinyl ester laminating resin and special sizing on its 13.2 m V2000 Class patrol craft to prevent osmotic blistering for 15 years of exposure to ambient water - similar results were achieved using epoxy-based systems, while mechanical properties like flexural strength and modulus remained undamaged.

Sunseeker International uses Ashland AME 6000 vinyl ester barrier coat in its open mould hand lay-up production of the 124ft Sunseeker 37M. Reichhold Inc offers various Dion vinyl ester formulations tailored for marine fabrication processes, such as vacuum infusion. timber machining One such formulation is Dion 9500-501 for use with carbon fibre reinforcement.

Atlac 580 ACT

Atlac 580 ACT is a pre-accelerated, thixotropic urethane vinyl ester resin with medium viscosity and medium reactivity that demonstrates exceptional corrosion and heat resistance, suitable for carbon, glass and aramid fiber reinforced composite materials as well as chemical-, acidic salt-resistant products and hot water resistance. Due to its low exotherm during curing it allows thick products to be formed into one layer. Furthermore it boasts excellent wetting & deaerating properties which allow air removal from surfaces of laminates while providing easy process performance that facilitates handling and cure times.

Vinyl-ester resins tend to have lower densities and shrinkage upon curing than other vinyl-ester resins, making this material compatible with all fabrication techniques, particularly filament winding, centrifugal casting, pultrusion, hand lay-up and sprayup applications. Furthermore, this resin can also be combined with flake glass or mica for use as mortars, floor toppings or equipment lining systems; additionally styrene may be added for injection molding techniques.

CoREZYN (r)

CoREZYN vinyl ester resin series was developed to meet EPA 40 CFR Part 63 HAP requirements for boat manufacturing as well as California SCAQMD Rule 1162 high strength resin requirements. They offer excellent physical properties, fast Barcol development rates and strong corrosion resistance properties for superior boat building projects.

CoREZYN can also help prevent osmotic blistering in laminate panels, as evidenced by Interplastic Corporation's 15-year immersion studies. Their results showed that panels constructed using CoREZYN with its skin coat remained true to form after immersion.

CoREZYN is an elastomer-modified aromatic epoxy vinyl ester resin used in the manufacturing of FRP pipes and tanks that feature excellent chemical resistance to chemicals, alkalis, solvents and fatigue resistance - as well as being suitable for oil and gas, water treatment/wastewater management/power generation industries. CoREZYN may be combined with butyral and bisphenol A resins to form composite applications.

Corvex 169-826

Manufacturers use molecular manipulation and various additives to customize vinyl ester resins for specific applications, including tailoring the content, gel time and cure rate as well as thermal tolerance, toughness and cosmetic properties to meet specific customer demands. Plus, their moisture resistance surpasses that of polyester resins reducing risk of hydrolysis-induced blistering.

Velocity Powerboats of Florida use Hydrex 100 and Corvex 169-826 resins with S-glass, Kevlar and carbon reinforcements in its 41 foot Super Sport model's sandwich monocoque for blister resistance and excellent toughness, as well as being heat distortion temperatures compatible and featuring minimal print through that would mar traditional gel coats.

West Bay SonShip Yachts of Canada switched from isophthalic polyester resins to vinyl ester resins when adopting a closed mould vacuum infusion process, opting for Interplastic's CoREZYN VE8155 resin as its mould tooling resin for its luxury GRP yachts, providing toughness and quick curing time that keeps production on schedule while simultaneously improving fibre adhesion.
