This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of pleurodesis procedure by ensuring the expansion of the lung and occluding lung parenchyma leaks with an autologous blood patch.
A total of 24 patients (17 males, 7 females; mean age 59.9±12.2 years; range, 30 to 86 years) who underwent autologous blood patch pleurodesis in our clinic between November 2015 and November 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were not eligible to undergo chemical pleurodesis due to a nonexpandable lung or poor general condition. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients and postoperative data were evaluated.
The air leak stopped within 48 h after autologous blood patch pleurodesis in seven patients. The air leak significantly decreased in 13 patients, while it remained unchanged in four patients. A Heimlich valve was placed in the patients in whom the air leak stopped or significantly decreased. The follow-up chest X-rays showed that the respective lungs of these patients became completely expandable.
Our study results suggest that the autologous blood patch procedure is a favorable option for the patients who are unable to benefit much from the conventional chemical pleurodesis methods due to contraindications to surgery or the presence of non-expandable lungs.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of primary laparoscopic repair of Morgagni hernia.
In this retrospective study, a total of 12 patients (4 males, 8 females; mean age 56.5±14.9 years; range, 32 to 80 years) who underwent primary laparoscopic repair for Morgagni hernia between January 2014 and December 2019 were included. #link# In all cases, the hernia sac was excised and the defect was repaired primarily with non-absorbable sutures.
All patients had excellent outcomes and were uneventfully discharged from the hospital after a mean length of hospital stay of 4.6±1.3 days (range, 3 to 7 days). No mortality, morbidity or recurrence were observed in any of the patients.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the surgical outcomes after enucleation of esophageal leiomyomas and present the feasibility of enucleation using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.
The medical records of 13 patients (8 males, 5 females; mean age 45.9 years; range, 30 to 69 years) who underwent open or thoracoscopic surgery for an esophageal leiomyoma between April 2007 and June 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were evaluated with regard to age, sex, presenting symptoms, duration of symptoms, size and localization of tumors, diagnostic methods, surgical methods, conversion to open surgery, morbidity and mortality, discharge time, and follow-up period.
Of the patients, four were operated via thoracotomy and nine via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Enucleation was successfully completed with thoracoscopy in five patients. Four patients required conversion to thoracotomy. In the early postoperative period, two of these four patients developed complications and underwent re-thoracotomy. A solitary leiomyoma was detected in all, but one patient (multiple). The mean size of the tumors was 68.4 mm. Complications were seen in only one patient during follow-up and no recurrence was observed in any patient.
Our study results indicate that thoracoscopic enucleation of esophageal leiomyoma is a safe, feasible, and effective technique in selected patients and conversion to open surgery can be easily done for any reason during the procedure.

This study aims to identify the prognostic factors in Stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer and to investigate whether there was a significant difference in terms of overall survival and diseasefree survival among the subgroups belonging to this disease stage.
Between January 2010 and December 2018, a total of 144 patients (125 males, 19 females; median age 60 years; range, 41 to 80 years) who were operated for non-small cell lung cancer in our clinic and whose pathological stage was reported as IIIA were retrospectively analyzed. Data including demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients, histopathological diagnosis, the standardized uptake value of the mass on positron emission tomography-computed tomography, tumor diameter, type of surgery, lymph node metastasis status, visceral pleural invasion, and overall and disease-free survival rates were recorded.
The median survival was 39 (range, 27.8 to 46.1) months and the five-year overall survival rate was 28%. The mean tumor diameter was 4.3±2.7 cm. The median disease-free survival was 37 (range, 28.1 to 48.6) months and the five-year disease-free survival rate was 26.9%. In the multivariate analysis, overall survival and disease-free survival in T2N2M0 subgroup were significantly worse than the other subgroups. The other poor prognostic factors of survival were the standardized uptake value of the tumor, pneumonectomy, and histopathological subtypes other than squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Parietal pleural invasion was significantly associated with worse disease-free survival rates.

This study aims to establish a cut-off value for increases in the esophageal wall thickness measured using computed tomography to differentiate between benign and malignant pathologies.
A total of 144 patients (61 males, 83 females; mean age 57.2±12.4 years; range, 24 to 86 years) who underwent thoracic and/or abdominal computed tomography in the radiology clinic between January 2015 and June 2018 for any reason and who were found to have a thickening of the esophageal wall or gastroesophageal junction were retrospectively analyzed. learn more were examined by two radiologists who reached consensus on the wall morphology and thickness, anatomic localization, and any accompanying findings regardless of the endoscopy results. Benign and malignant patients were identified from the endoscopy and/or biopsy results. This study aims to compare the results of the open surgical approach versus endobronchial conical stent application in the treatment of extensive fistulas.
Between December 2004 and April 2016, a total of 36 patients (34 males, 2 females; mean age 59.6±8.1 years; range, 40 to 72 years) with a bronchopleural fistula of ≥8 mm in diameter and underwent either conventional open surgery with stump-supported intercostal muscle flap or endobronchial ultra-flex expandable stenting were retrospectively analyzed. This study aims to identify specific segmental distribution patterns of lower extremity chronic venous disease based on latent class analysis of Doppler mapping results.
A total of 1,871 lower extremities of 1,218 treatment-naïve patients (536 males, 682 females; mean age 45.4 years; range, 21 to 87 years) with chronic venous disease referred for Doppler examination between September 2009 and August 2018 were included. Refluxing superficial venous segments of the lower extremities were mapped and recorded in database in 10 distinct anatomic locations as follows saphenofemoral junction and proximal greater saphenous vein, mid and distal thigh greater saphenous vein, anterior and posterior accessory saphenous veins, proximal and distal calf greater saphenous vein, saphenopopliteal junction and proximal lesser saphenous vein, distal lesser saphenous vein, and intersaphenous veins including Giacomini"s vein. Repeated examinations were excluded. The latent class analysis was applied to identify any possible anopulation, provides a new approach to classification of reflux patterns in chronic venous disease. Identification of latent classes may provide understanding of different pathophysiological bases of venous reflux and more optimal planning for interventions.
This study aims to evaluate the frequency of and associated risk factors for adverse events caused by cardiac catheterization procedures in pediatric patients.
Between January 2009 and January 2012, a total of 599 pediatric patients (320 males, 279 females; mean age 5.4±4.7 years; range, 1 day to 21 years) who underwent cardiac catheterization in our cardiac catheterization laboratory were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic and clinical data of the patients including the duration of the procedure, management of anesthesia, the American Society of Anesthesiologists class, and Catheterization Risk Score for Pediatrics, and procedure-related serious adverse events were recorded.
The incidence of procedure-related serious adverse events was 9.18%. Potential risk factors associated with serious adverse events were identified as interventional heart catheterization, high scores obtained from the Catheterization Risk Score for Pediatrics, the use of endotracheal tube in airway control, and prolonged procedural duration.
