Metallic nanoparticles have been used to harvest energy from a light source and transfer it to adsorbed gas molecules, which results in a reduced chemical reaction temperature. However, most reported reactions, such as ethylene epoxidation, ammonia decomposition and H-D bond formation are exothermic, and only H-D bond formation has been achieved at room temperature. These reactions require low activation energies (3.1 eV) can be initiated at room temperature by using localized surface plasmons in the deep-UV range. As an example, by leveraging simultaneous excitation of multiple localized surface plasmon modes of Al nanoparticles by using high-energy electrons, we initiate the reduction of CO2 to CO by carbon at room temperature. We employ an environmental transmission electron microscope to excite and characterize Al localized surface plasmon resonances, and simultaneously measure the spatial distribution of carbon gasification near the nanoparticles in a CO2 environment. This approach opens a path towards exploring other industrially relevant chemical processes that are initiated by plasmonic fields at room temperature. The study of topology as it relates to physical systems has rapidly accelerated during the past decade. Critical to the realization of new topological phases is an understanding of the materials that exhibit them and precise control of the materials chemistry. The convergence of new theoretical methods using symmetry indicators to identify topological material candidates and the synthesis of high-quality single crystals plays a key role, warranting discussion and context at an accessible level. This Perspective provides a broad introduction to topological phases, their known properties, and material realizations. We focus on recent work in topological Weyl and Dirac semimetals, with a particular emphasis on magnetic Weyl semimetals and emergent fermions in chiral crystals and their extreme responses to excitations, and we highlight areas where the field can continue to make remarkable discoveries. Brimarafenib We further examine open questions and directions for the topological materials science community to pursue, including exploration of non-equilibrium properties of Weyl semimetals and cavity-dressed topological materials. The rapid scale-up of research on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spawned a large number of potential vaccines and immunotherapies, accompanied by a commensurately large number of in vitro assays and in vivo models to measure their effectiveness. These assays broadly have the same end-goal - to predict the clinical efficacy of prophylactic and therapeutic interventions in humans. However, the apparent potency of different interventions can vary considerably between assays and animal models, leading to very different predictions of clinical efficacy. Complete harmonization of experimental methods may be intractable at the current pace of research. However, here we analyse a selection of existing assays for measuring antibody-mediated virus neutralization and animal models of infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and provide a framework for comparing results between studies and reconciling observed differences in the effects of interventions. Finally, we propose how we might optimize these assays for better comparison of results from in vitro and animal studies to accelerate progress.

Liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP-2) was recently identified as an endogenous non-competitive allosteric antagonist of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor 1a (GHSR1a). LEAP-2 blunts ghrelin-induced feeding and its plasma levels are modulated in response to nutritional status in humans. Despite the relevant role of ghrelin in childhood, puberty, and childhood obesity, the potential implication of LEAP-2 in these aspects remains totally unknown. We aimed to investigate the regulation of circulating plasma LEAP-2 in childhood and adolescent either lean or obese.

Plasma levels of LEAP-2 were analyzed in a cross-sectional study with lean and obese children and adolescents (n = 150). Circulating LEAP-2 levels were significantly higher in girls than in boys independently of whether they were obese or lean. In addition, LEAP-2 was significantly increased (p < 0.001) in pubertal than in prepubertal girls, while no changes were found in boys between both developmental stages. Moreover, in girls growth rate, and puberty onset. Future studies assessing LEAP-2 levels in longitudinal studies and its implications in growth rate, puberty onset, and reproductive hormones will help to understand the relevance of this hormone in this stage of life.

Neck adipose tissue (NAT) volume increases with general adiposity, with fat accumulating in different neck tissue compartments. In patients with certain malignant/benign tumours, the accumulation of NAT, and certain NAT distributions, have been associated with cardiometabolic risk (CMR). However, it is unknown whether the same relationships exist in healthy people, and whether NAT accumulation and distribution are related to the inflammatory status.

In this cross-sectional study, 139 young healthy adults (68% women) underwent a computed tomography scan to quantify the volume of compartmental (i.e., subcutaneous, intermuscular and perivertebral) and total NAT at the height of vertebra C5. Anthropometric indicators were measured, and body composition determined using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Information on CMR factors (i.e., blood glycaemic and lipid markers, blood pressure and physical fitness) was also gathered, and a CMR score calculated. Several plasma cytokines and serum components of the innaappears to be as valuable as VAT mass in terms of predicting CMR and inflammatory status.

NAT volume and its distribution among different tissue compartments is associated with the CMR and inflammatory profile of young healthy adults. Total NAT volume appears to be as valuable as VAT mass in terms of predicting CMR and inflammatory status.Gram-negative bacteria are surrounded by a cell envelope that comprises an outer membrane (OM) and an inner membrane that, together, delimit the periplasmic space, which contains the peptidoglycan (PG) sacculus. Covalent anchoring of the OM to the PG is crucial for envelope integrity in Escherichia coli. When the OM is not attached to the PG, the OM forms blebs and detaches from the cell. The Braun lipoprotein Lpp1 covalently attaches OM to the PG but is present in only a small number of γ-proteobacteria; the mechanism of OM-PG attachment in other species is unclear. Here, we report that the OM is attached to PG by covalent cross-links between the N termini of integral OM β-barrel-shaped proteins (OMPs) and the peptide stems of PG in the α-proteobacteria Brucella abortus and Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Cross-linking is catalysed by L,D-transpeptidases and attached OMPs have a conserved alanyl-aspartyl motif at their N terminus. Mutation of the aspartate in this motif prevents OMP cross-linking and results in OM membrane instability.
