Host-specific expression profiles were evident, particularly in transcripts encoding proteases and proteins involved in lipid metabolism, cell adhesion, and development. We confirm for the first time the presence of homeobox proteins and a frizzled homologue in myxozoan parasites. Proteasome function The novel insights into myxozoan biology that this study reveals will help to focus research in developing future disease control strategies.Electrostatics of depolarization field Ed in relation to the polarization is studied. In particular, the value of permittivity for Ed (εd) in prototypical situations of ferroelectrics, including Mehta formula, is examined by ab initio calculations. By using spontaneous polarization PS corresponding to accurate experiment ones, we show εd = 1, which suggests that the results of εd ≫ 1 indicate hidden mechanisms; εd = 1 suggests that the effect of Ed is significant to induce intriguing important phenomena overlooked by εd ≫ 1. A bridge between εd = 1 and εd ≫ 1, i.e. the consistency of εd = 1 with conventional results is presented. The exact electrostatic equality of head-to-head-tail-to-tail domains to free-standing ferroelectrics is deduced. Hence, most stoichiometric clean freestanding monodomain ferroelectrics and head-to-head-tail-to-tail domains are shown unstable regardless of size, unless partially metallic. Proteasome function This verifies the previous results in a transparent manner. This conclusion is shown consistent with a recent hyperferroelectric LiBeSb and "freestanding" monolayer ferroelectrics, of which origin is suggested to be adsorbates. In addition, this restriction is suggested to break in externally strained ultrathin ferroelectrics. The macroscopic formulas of Ed are found valid down to a several unit-cells, when electronic and atomic-scale surface effects are unimportant and accurate PS is used.Neutrophilic Fe(II) oxidizing bacteria like Mariprofundus ferrooxydans are obligate chemolithoautotrophic bacteria that play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of iron and other elements in multiple environments. These bacteria generally exhibit a singular metabolic mode of growth which prohibits comparative "omics" studies. Furthermore, these bacteria are considered non-amenable to classical genetic methods due to low cell densities, the inability to form colonies on solid medium, and production of copious amounts of insoluble iron oxyhydroxides as their metabolic byproduct. link= Proteasome function Consequently, the molecular and biochemical understanding of these bacteria remains speculative despite the availability of substantial genomic information. Here we develop the first genetic system in neutrophilic Fe(II) oxidizing bacterium and use it to engineer lithoheterotrophy in M. ferrooxydans, a metabolism that has been speculated but not experimentally validated. This synthetic biology approach could be extended to gain physiological understanding and domesticate other bacteria that grow using a single metabolic mode.Cumulative burden of chronic health conditions and neurocognitive and physical function were examined among survivors of childhood acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treated with hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT; n = 66) or conventional therapy (CT; n = 67). Survivors and controls underwent a comprehensive clinical assessment, and health conditions were graded using a modified version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. By age 40 years, HCT and CT survivors had an average 17.4 (95% confidence interval [CI] 14.6-20.1) and 9.3 (7.7-11.1) grade 1-4 conditions versus 3.8 (3.3-4.2) in community controls. Compared to controls, HCT survivors had a higher prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia (45.5% vs. 18.3%), hypercholesterolemia (47.0% vs. 30.9%), hypothyroidism (27.3% vs. 4.0%), and primary hypogonadism (p  less then  0.001). CT survivors had a higher prevalence of cardiomyopathy (11.9% vs. 2.7%) and hypertension (53.7% vs. 44.3%). Neurocognitive impairment was elevated across all domains compared to controls but did not differ by treatment modality. link2 Compared to controls, a higher proportion of HCT survivors had impairments in strength and endurance; whereas flexibility and mobility impairments were noted among CT survivors. Despite successful advances in childhood AML therapy, many therapeutic exposures remain unchanged. These findings support ongoing investigations of novel therapies and strategies to ameliorate the risk of late morbidities. The AlcR fungal protein responds to ethanol and binds to the fungal pAlcA promoter in its presence. This system was transferred to plants over twenty years ago and was claimed to function in the same manner in plants. However, never has the control experiment with plants containing the AlcR gene alone, with no downstream inducible construct, been made. In this paper, I conduct several experiments with this control, growing p35AlcR plants in the presence or absence of ethanol. I found that when these plants were grown in the presence of ethanol, growth in several tissues and several stages of growth was retarded. This demonstrates that this system is not suitable for use in the plant sciences, and casts doubt on the conclusions of papers that have published phenotypes using this system.Rawanbuki, a variety of Japanese butterbur (Petasites japonicus subsp. giganteus), grow naturally along the Rawan River, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Most plants reach 2-3 m in height and 10 cm in diameter in 2 months and are much larger than those grown along other rivers. link2 We examined the hypothesis that nutrients exported from upland streams enhance the growth of the Rawanbuki. Nutrient concentrations, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and base cations, in the Rawan River were much higher than those in rivers of adjacent watersheds. High nutrient concentrations and moisture contents were found in soil along the Rawan River and a significant relationship was found between physicochemical soil conditions and aboveground biomass of butterburs. This indicates that extremely large Rawanbuki plants could be caused by these high nutrient concentrations and moisture contents in the soils. A manipulation experiment showed that fertilization simulated the growth environment along the Rawan River and enhanced the stem height and stem diameter of butterburs. This study concluded that the extremely large butterburs are caused by a large amount of nutrients exported from upland areas. These results are the first demonstration of the role of stream water nutrients in enlarging agricultural crops. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has killed over a million people since its emergence in late 2019. However, there has been substantial variability in the policies and intensity of diagnostic efforts between countries. In this paper, we quantitatively evaluate the association between national contact tracing policies and case fatality rates of COVID-19 in 138 countries. Our regression analyses indicate that countries that implement comprehensive contact tracing have significantly lower case fatality rates. This association of contact tracing policy and case fatality rates is robust in our longitudinal regression models, even after controlling for the number of tests conducted and non-pharmaceutical control measures adopted by governments. Our results suggest that comprehensive contact tracing is instrumental not only to curtailing transmission but also to reducing case fatality rates. link3 Contact tracing achieves the early detection and isolation of secondary cases which are particularly important given that the peak in infectiousness occurs during the presymptomatic phase. The early detection achieved by contact tracing accelerates the rate at which infected individuals receive medical care they need to maximize their chance of recovery. In addition, the combination of reduced transmission and more rapid recovery diminishes the burden on the healthcare system which in turn ensures that the resources remain available for individuals who do become infected.Chondroitin sulfates are implicated in epidermal biology, but functional significance of chondroitin sulfates remains unclear. Here, we report that chondroitin 6-sulfate is important for the maintenance of epidermal homeostasis. link3 Mice deficient in chondroitin 6-O-sulfotransferase-1 (C6st-1), which is involved in biosynthesis of chondroitin 6-sulfate, exhibited keratinocyte hyperproliferation and impaired skin permeability barrier function. Chondroitin 6-sulfate directly interacted with the EGF receptor and negatively controlled ligand-induced EGF receptor signaling. Normal function of hyperproliferative C6st-1-knockout mouse-derived keratinocytes was rescued by treatment with exogenous chondroitin 6-sulfate. Epidermal hyperplasia, induced using imiquimod, was more severe in C6st-1-knockout mice than in C6st-1 wild-type mice. Taken together, these findings indicate that chondroitin 6-sulfate represses keratinocyte proliferation in normal skin, and that the expression level of C6st-1 may be associated with susceptibility to psoriasis.Head-down bed rest (HDBR) has previously been shown to alter cerebrovascular and autonomic control. Previous work found that sustained HDBR (≥ 20 days) attenuates the hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR); however, little is known about shorter-term effects of HDBR nor the influence of HDBR on the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR). We investigated the effect of 4-h HDBR on HCVR and HVR and hypothesized attenuated ventilatory responses due to greater carotid and brain blood flow. Cardiorespiratory responses of young men (n = 11) and women (n = 3) to 5% CO2 or 10% O2 before and after 4-h HDBR were examined. HDBR resulted in lower HR, lower cardiac output index, lower common carotid artery flow, higher SpO2, and higher pulse wave velocity. After HDBR, tidal volume and ventilation responses to 5% CO2 were enhanced (all P  0.05). Short-duration HDBR does not alter the HVR, yet enhances the HCVR, which we hypothesize is a consequence of cephalic CO2 accumulation from cerebral congestion.Because the liver plays a major role in metabolic homeostasis and secretion of clotting factors and inflammatory innate immune proteins, there is interest in understanding the mechanisms of hepatic cell activation under hyperglycaemia and whether this can be attenuated pharmacologically. We have previously shown that hyperglycaemia stimulates major changes in chromatin organization and metabolism in hepatocytes, and that the histone deacetylase inhibitor valproic acid (VPA) is able to reverse some of these metabolic changes. In this study, we have used RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) to investigate how VPA influences gene expression in hepatocytes. Interesting, we observed that VPA attenuates hyperglycaemia-induced activation of complement and coagulation cascade genes. We also observe that many of the gene activation events coincide with changes to histone acetylation at the promoter of these genes indicating that epigenetic regulation is involved in VPA action. The latency of the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) may provide valuable information regarding the integrity of the auditory system, as it could potentially reveal the presence of multiple intracerebral sources. To estimate multiple latencies from high-order ASSRs, we propose a novel two-stage procedure that consists of a nonparametric estimation method, called apparent latency from phase coherence (ALPC), followed by a heuristic sequential forward selection algorithm (SFS). Compared with existing methods, ALPC-SFS requires few prior assumptions, and is straightforward to implement for higher-order nonlinear responses to multi-cosine sound complexes with their initial phases set to zero. It systematically evaluates the nonlinear components of the ASSRs by estimating multiple latencies, automatically identifies involved ASSR components, and reports a latency consistency index. To verify the proposed method, we performed simulations for several scenarios two nonlinear subsystems with different or overlapping outputs.
