No other intraoperative complications were noted. On univariate and multivariate analyses, the da Vinci platform model was not a predicting factor of major complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3). We described how technological progress impacted peri and postoperative outcomes during transitions between robotic surgical platforms for radical prostatectomy. In particular, the technological improvements associated to the increased surgeon's expertise made the transition to the single port safe and effective when compared with previous platforms.

The goal of this paper was to evaluate the impact on erectile and ejaculatory function after anterior and posterior urethroplasty.

With a rise in the use of urethroplasty, its impact on sexual function has come into question. For anterior urethroplasties, some degree of erectile dysfunction is common, but this tends to be transient, with most patients having a resolution of any de novo dysfunction by 12 months. Patients with posterior urethral strictures have a very high rate of erectile dysfunction prior to surgery and may show improvement after urethroplasty. Ejaculatory function tends to improve in patients due to alleviation of obstruction while some patients notice degradation in force of ejaculation. While urethroplasty has a minimal permanent effect on sexual function for most patients, there are some patients who notice improvement and others worsening. Patients should be counseled on these risks prior to urethroplasty.

Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and, in consequence, oxidative stress, are physiological as well as pathological processes which take place in almost all types of cells. Nrf2, in response to oxidative stress, activates expression and production of antioxidant enzymes to remove free radicals. However, the role of Nrf2 seems to be more sophisticated and its increased expression observed in cancer cells allows to draw a conclusion that its role is tissue-and condition-dependent. Interestingly, Nrf2 might also play a crucial role in response to environmental factors like mycotoxins. Thus, the aim of the study is to review the role of Nrf2 in cells exposed to most common mycotoxins to check if the Nrf2 signaling pathway serves as the main response element to mycotoxin-induced oxidative stress in human and animal cells and if it can be a target of detoxifying agents.Carbon monoxide (CO) has long been known as a "silent killer" because of its ability to bind hemoglobin (Hb), leading to reduced oxygen carrying capacity of Hb, which is the main cause of CO poisoning (COP) in humans. Emerging studies suggest that mitochondria is a key target of CO action that can impact key biological processes, including apoptosis, cellular proliferation, inflammation, and autophagy. Despite its toxicity at high concentrations, CO also exhibits cyto- and tissue-protective effects at low concentrations in animal models of organ injury and disease. Specifically, CO modulates the production of pro- or anti-inflammatory cytokines and mediators by regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome. Given that human diseases are strongly associated with inflammation, a deep understanding of the exact mechanism is helpful for treatment. Autophagic factors and inflammasomes interact in various situations, including inflammatory disease, and exosomes might function as the bridge between the inflammasome and autophagy activation. Thus, the interplay among autophagy, mitochondrial dysfunction, exosomes, and the inflammasome may play pivotal roles in the health effects of CO. In this review, we summarize the latest research on the beneficial and toxic effects of CO and their underlying mechanisms, focusing on the important role of the inflammasome and its possible crosstalk with autophagy and exosomes. This knowledge may lead to the development of new therapies for inflammation-related diseases and is essential for the development of new therapeutic strategies and biomarkers of COP.Iron oxide nanoparticles gain increasing attention due to their broad industrial use. However, safety concerns exist since their effects on human cells are still under investigation. The presence of iron oxide nanoparticles in the food pigment E172 has been shown recently. Here, we studied four iron oxide nanoparticles, one food pigment E172 and the ionic control FeSO4 regarding dissolution in biological media, uptake and transport, and cellular effects in vitro in human intestinal Caco-2 and HepaRG hepatocarcinoma cells. The iron oxide nanoparticles passed the gastrointestinal passage without dissolution and reached the intestine in the form of particles. Minor uptake was seen into Caco-2 cells but almost no transport to the basolateral site was detected for any of the tested particles. HepaRG cells showed higher particle uptake. Caco-2 cells showed no alterations in reactive oxygen species production, apoptosis, or mitochondrial membrane potential, whereas two particles induced apoptosis in HepaRG cells, and one altered mitochondrial membrane potential at non-cytotoxic concentrations. No correlation between physicochemical particle characteristics and cellular effects was observed, thus emphasizing the need for case-by-case assessment of iron oxide nanoparticles.Understanding the population structure of Fasciola flukes in domestic and wild animals is important for determining the extent of cross-infection between them. Although the parthenogenetic Fasciola flukes in Japan have been shown to comprise five genetic types based on the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) and mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (nad1) regions, these genetic regions are not suitable for analyzing their population structure. In the present study, the genetic diversity and population structure of the parthenogenetic Fasciola flukes in Japan were studied using microsatellite DNA, ITS1, and nad1 regions. A total of 144 parthenogenetic Fasciola flukes, obtained from cattle and sika deer in 16 localities, were individually analyzed using PCR-RFLP for ITS1, PCR-direct sequence analysis for nad1, and post-labeling PCR and capillary electrophoresis for microsatellite DNA regions. The flukes showed higher genetic diversity in the microsatellite DNA regions than ITS1 and nad1. The population structures of parthenogenetic Fasciola flukes were unclear, however, it was suggested that the flukes are more diverse populations. We hypothesized that their distribution throughout Japan is closely related to livestock movement dependent on human activity. Moreover, it is considered that cross-infection of the flukes between cattle and sika deer possibly has occurred in the past.Sulfate radical based-advanced oxidation process has received increasing interest in the remediation of wastewater and contaminated soil. In this study, degradation of 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) was investigated over peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by MnO2, which was prepared by liquid-phase oxidation method. The prepared MnO2 was characterized by transition electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Characterization results showed that α-MnO2 exhibited the highest surface area and Mn (III) content. The PMS activation by MnO2 in 2, 4-DCP degradation followed the order of α-MnO2 >  γ-MnO2 > β-MnO2, which is dependent on the properties of MnO2 including crystal structure, surface area and Mn (III) content. Influences of initial concentration of 2, 4-DCP, PMS and MnO2 dosage, pH and co-existing inorganic ions on the degradation were examined. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments with ethanol and tert-butanol suggested that sulfate radicals were the dominant radicals in the process. Nintedanib Findings in this study indicated that α-MnO2 was an attractive catalyst for activation of PMS to degrade 2, 4-DCP in aqueous solution.Vegetation reconstruction was widely adopted for the waste slag site. But the toxic elements may be made public from slag due to the organic acid secreted by plant roots, which will pollute the surrounding environment and harm human health. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the harm of toxic substances released from zinc (Zn) smelting waste slag to zebrafish. The effect was simulated by adding organic acid to slag, and the toxicity of the slag was evaluated through the enzyme activity, genetic toxicity, tissue sections of zebrafish liver tissue. The results showed that more heavy metals were made public from the slag, as the concentration of organic acids increased. Exposure to toxic substances for 14 days, the antioxidant enzyme activities, termed as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), were significantly affected, which caused obvious malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation. A comet assay revealed dose-dependent DNA damage in hepatocytes. Depending on the histopathological analysis, atrophy and necrosis of cells and increased hepatic plate gap were observed. The obtained results highlighted that toxic substances from slag may be deleterious to zebrafish. This paper presents a comparative study of endophytic bacteria from cultivated (Oryza sativa) and wild rice (Oryza rufipogon) plants and their functional traits related to plant growth promotion. A total of 70 bacterial isolates were characterized by both biochemical and molecular identification methods. Taxonomic classification showed dominance of three major phyla, viz, Firmicutes (57.1%), Actinobacteria (20.0%) and Proteobacteria (22.8%). Screening for in vitro plant growth-promoting activities revealed a hitherto unreported endophytic bacterium from wild rice germplasm, Microbacterium laevaniformans RS0111 with highest indole acetic acid (28.39 ± 1.39 µg/ml) and gibberellic acid (67.23 ± 1.83 µg/ml) producing efficiency. Few other endophytic isolates from cultivated rice germplasm such as Bacillus tequilensis RHS01 showed highest phosphate solubilizing activity (81.70 ± 1.98 µg/ml), while Microbacterium testaceum MKLS01 and Microbacterium enclense MI03 L05 showed highest potassium (53.42 ± 0.75 µg/ml) and zinc solubilizing activity (157.50%). Fictibacillus aquaticus LP20 05 produced highest siderophore (64.8%). In vivo evaluation of plant growth-promoting efficiencies of the isolates showed that Microbacterium laevaniformans RS0111, Microbacterium testaceum MKLS01 and Bacillus tequilensis RHS 01 could increase rice grain yield by 3.4-fold when compared to the control group. This study indicates the potentiality of rice endophytes isolates as an effective bioinoculants.
