To identify empathy training models and the effects on psychological concerns in paid and unpaid caregivers of older people.

A systematic review was conducted. Searches for relevant articles were performed in the Embase, LILACS, PsycInfo, Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science databases using the following search strategy "Empathy AND (Education OR Training OR Intervention) AND Caregiver." No restrictions were imposed regarding language or year of publication.

Empathy training for caregivers of older people were performed in six studies, three of which identified a significant increase in empathy levels and consequent reduction in psychological concerns. Empathy training focused on aspects of empathy and/or the caregiver had significant effects on the outcome variables. Moreover, training conducted online, by telephone and/or in person can generate satisfactory results. The other three studies that conducted training with a focus on aspects of dementia and/or old age did not present any effect on the outcome variables.

Moreover, training in different care contexts can minimize the negative impacts of providing care.In Australia, mental illness has been recognised as a National Health Priority area, with the coronavirus pandemic adding a layer of urgency to the need to address the multiple health problems faced by clients with mental illnesses. Whilst much has been done in efforts to support these clients, little is known about their medication knowledge and experience with health professionals. The aim of the study was to explore the knowledge and beliefs of clients on the use of psychotropic medications and study their experiences with healthcare providers. Adult participants at a not-for-profit community-managed specialist mental health service provider in Adelaide, South Australia were recruited. Four focus group sessions were conducted between February 2020 and March 2021. All sessions were co-facilitated by a peer practitioner with lived experience. Sessions were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Participants (n = 27) reported that provision of medication education was inadequate and, in some cases, non-existent. There was an apparent lack of support for monitoring and managing common side effects, such as weight gain. Participants described not being involved in any decision-making processes and that establishing and maintaining a therapeutic relationship with their healthcare providers was challenging. Perceived stigma remains a barrier in accessing healthcare. Despite participants regularly interacting with a range of healthcare providers, findings highlight key gaps in care, particularly medication education and establishing a therapeutic relationship with their healthcare providers. Future mental health reforms should consider the provision of additional medication education in community settings, such as at not-for-profit organisations. Moreover, healthcare providers should take a proactive approach in establishing therapeutic relationships.

The pathogenesis of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritoneal fibrosis (PF) is not clearly understood, and current treatment options are limited.

In this study, the effect of PD-related PF on mitochondrial biogenesis was investigated, and the effect of activation of the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-PGC-1α (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α) pathway on PF was evaluated in mice.

In a mouse model of PD-related PF, AMPK-PGC-1α signaling (phospho-AMPK, PGC-1α, NRF-1, NRF-2 and TFAM expression) was downregulated, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) levels were reduced, and mitochondrial structure was damaged in the peritoneum. In addition, TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) staining showed typical apoptosis characteristics in peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs). Activation of the AMPK-PGC-1α pathway (PGC-1α overexpression or metformin, which is an agonist of AMPK) upregulated phospho-AMPK, PGC-1α, nuclear respiratory factors 1 (NRF-1) and 2 (NRF-2), and mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) expression and mtDNA content, improved mitochondrial morphological manifestations, inhibited apoptosis of PMCs and alleviated PF.

Both-column acetabular fracture is a type that accumulates both the pelvis and acetabulum with complex fracture line alignment and has variant fracture fragments. The selection of different reduction landmarks and sequences produces different qualities of reduction. This study aims to compare the operation-related items, quality of reduction, and hip functional outcome by using different reduction landmarks and sequences for management of both-column acetabular fractures (BCAF).

A consecutive cohort of 42 patients from January 2013 to January 2019 with BCAF were treated operatively with different reduction landmarks and sequences pelvic ring fractures reduction first (PRFRF group) and acetabular fractures reduction first (AFRF group). Preoperative computer visual surgical procedures were applied. There were 22 patients in PRFRF group and 20 patients in AFRF group. The surgical details, complications, radiographic and clinical results were recorded. Several approaches have been adopted to increase research opportunities including curriculum based undergraduate research opportunities (CUREs), in which research is embedded into course content. Here we report on efforts to tackle a different challenge providing research opportunities to students engaged in remote learning or who are learning at satellite campuses or community colleges with limited research infrastructure. In our project we engaged students learning remotely or at regional centers to map gene expression in the mouse brain. In this project we mapped expression of the Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule like 1 (Dscaml1) gene in mouse brain using a LacZ expression reporter line. Identifying where Dscaml1 is expressed in the brain is an important next step in determining if its roles in development and function in the retina are conserved in the rest of the brain. Students working remotely reconstruct brain montages and annotated Dscaml1 expression in the brain of mice carrying one or two copies of the gene trap. We built on these findings by further characterizing Dscaml1 expression in inhibitory neurons of the visual pathway. These results build on and extend previous findings and demonstrate the utility of including distance learners in an active research group for both the student learners and the research team. We conclude with best practices we have developed based on this and other distance learner focused projects.The development of non-precious metal electrocatalysts with remarkable activity is a major objective for achieving high-efficiency hydrogen generation. Here, a trimetallic electrocatalyst with a dendritic nanostructure, which is denoted as NiMoCu-NF, was fabricated on nickel foam via a gas-template electrodeposition strategy. By virtue of the metallic doping and structural optimization, NiMoCu-NF exhibits superior HER electrocatalytic activity with an overpotential of 52 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Additionally, the NiMoCu-NF-derived nickel-based (oxy)hydroxide species in the oxidation operating state deliver considerable electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) performance to match the efficient H2 generation, with a low voltage of 1.54 V to realize overall electrolysis at 50 mA cm-2. Undernutrition, a common form of malnutrition in children, encompasses stunting, wasting and underweight. The causes of child undernutrition are complex, suggesting that interventions to tackle malnutrition must be multifaceted. Furthermore, limited access to healthcare for vulnerable populations restricts the potential of hospital-based strategies.
